Hull is a City of two halves, connected by bridges over the River Hull. The current Drypool Bridge (named after the hamlet of Drypool on the East side) is a Scherzer lifting bridge that opened in 1961, replacing an earlier one that opened in 1889.
The bridge was painted to celebrate the mathematician John Venn (1834 - 1923) who devised the Venn diagram, and born in Hull, as part of the city's tenure of the UK City of Culture 2017 -2020.
