DryWall Anchor Operation

We recently installed some corner shelves designed to hold a lot of weight. None of the studs were in the right place for placing anchors so we had to use heavy duty dry wall toggle bolts. This video shows a 100lb capacity anchor and how it functions. Make sure the arrows on the unit are pointed up and down (not horizontal) to achieve the rated capacity.

I’ve been using those anchors for over 2 years and today my wife wanted wanted me to move what was hanging on them. I spent hours trying to figure out what to do/how to remove those ancors without cutting a larger hole in the wall and patching that. Your trick worked! I positioned the arrows, gave the ancor a few gentle taps and out it slid! Thank you very much!

Have a job tomorrow. Someone used one of these on a concrete wall. The shelf fell off the wall it was hanging from. Looking at the toggle anchor it didn't open up in the wall. Going to try this method. Thanks a million.

I believe the arrows are supposed to point in the direction of load. For example, when hanging something on a wall you would want the bar to deploy up / down so you would have the longest moment-arm to assist in the load distribution; The legs would be less effective if deployed side to side and the anchor would work more similarly to a standard auger-type anchor. Great video though and it's a very good point about being next to a stud.

Frank. You are correct. Orientation does make a difference if the anchor is to meet it's load rating. The author should fix this video. Thanks for helping everyone out.

Very good video! I like how you were curious about getting the self drilling toggle back out. You could mark one end of the vertical arrows with a marker (Sharpie) to know after screwing it in the drywall which side the bar was up.

It has been noted many times over the years of my posts that I sound like Costner or Hanks. Wrong on both counts because I am many years their senior. Few people know that in fact, they've both been imitating ME in all their movies all this time. Furthermore, it's probable neither has ever used this kind of drywall anchor. They probably just hire someone that sounds like Peter Lorre to do the dusty work.

Thanks for posting this. I am in the process of installing some rails for wire shelving in 1/2" drywall and I like this setup. The rails are about 7/8" thick so I may need to remove the screw after to install the rail. I appreciate your help on this. 😁
@otd80
@otd80 4 жыл бұрын
Removing the screw from the installed body simply means you'll have to re-engage the internal bar (which normally gets pushed loose from the back of the drywall) to once again pull it up to the back of the drywall. To reach that far back into the body uses up over half of the screw length. In the one I used the screw is 2.5" but only a little less than 1" is now sticking out from the wall after INITIALLY engaging the pushed back internal bar. This means any rail needs to be no more than about 3/4" thick, (particularly if you use any kind of washer under the screw head). If the rail is too thick (example: like a 2x4) you'll have to countersink the hole to allow the screw to adequately go down into it by removing the excess thickness.

Easy way I found out, cause its pretty hard to do. 1. Put screw Arrow Up, "Buildex "Left", Arrow up, E-Z Toggle "right" " 2. Get supplied bolt 1/8" and stick it back and forth "In a tapping motion a few times to hit the latch" 3. Then stick the bolt in the tip of the large anchor, and wiggle up and down. "This makes latch fall" 4. Get a phillips head screwdriver and "twist out counterclockwise slowly".
@shrim9123
@shrim9123 5 жыл бұрын
Nice! Is it easy to tell when you have successfully made the latch fall, like a certain sound or feel? Also, wouldn't the latch re-open while you are twisting the anchor to take it out (when the latch is on the bottom side)-or do you just try it as many times as needed until it stays in place?

So how can you hang something that has mounting holes on the back of, say, a medicine cabinet, if backing the screw out makes the toggle collapse?
@walterlangkowski4723
@walterlangkowski4723 Жыл бұрын
My problem is if the screw head is flush against the anchor holding the bar tight then soon as you loosen the head so you can hang something from it the bar looses it flushness to the back of the drywall then it’s pretty much useless
@otd80
@otd80 Жыл бұрын
It would seem that way BUT! When you hang "something" on the loosened screw - don't allow the weight of the something to hang on the screw until you tighten it up to pull the bar back into solid contact with the internal side of the drywall. This is especially important if you have to completely remove the screw to put it thru a hole in the something instead of sliding it down in a notch on the back of the something.

I really want to get these to hang my 9lb speakers on the wall but I keep reading all the horrible reviews on Lowes indicating that only about half of them work in one way or another... This video makes it looks simple but I think that helps that you can see the back o fit compared to not being able to see the back of the drywall.
@otd80
@otd80 4 жыл бұрын
I can think of a number of reasons why some could take issue with these. They won't work if there's a stud in the way. They won't hold the rated weight value if the arrows are not pointed up and down. The screw won't grab the internal pull bar if the shelving material is too thick and will therefore never "tighten up". And last but not least, we can't know if the bad reviews are from people who have little clue to which end of a screwdriver is the working one.
@NewShockerGuy
@NewShockerGuy 4 жыл бұрын
@@otd80 Very good points! Do you think there would be any issues if there is insulation behind the drywall? I still want to try these.
@otd80
@otd80 4 жыл бұрын
@@NewShockerGuy I think it would be dependent on the type of insulation. The expanding foam type could restrict the "flip over" action. That's because it's trimmed/cut even with the wall studs before the plaster board is installed. Pushing the anchor into it just pokes a round hole with no room for the flip. The standard fiberglass should present no problems as it's not a solid mass.

So how do you hang something heavy on the screw if it loosens as you unscrew it? Am I missing something here. For instance I hung 50 lb mirror on 2 and it’s sagging?
@otd80
@otd80 5 жыл бұрын
The screws must be used to secure the actual hanging device that your mirror attaches to. Example: a horizontal metal bar is attached with two of these anchors to the wall that is then used to hold the mirror. The long drywall screws are tightened against the metal bar...not directly used to hold the mirror. The other important issue is to make sure the little arrows on the body of the anchors point up and down...NOT horizontally.

At 1:45 I posed a hyperbolic value of a personal 1000lb (one thousand pound) shelf capacity. For recent non-STEM college graduates in gender studies...that would actually require 10 (ten) anchors holding up 1 (one) continuous length shelf (10x100=1000). Something I have never actually attempted in order to test the hyperbole. Too snarky?

how did you countersink these? I have a shelf that's about 1 inch thick and tried to hang it with these, but the screw would never tighten??
@otd80
@otd80 5 жыл бұрын
If you check at time 3:53 I note that "you really only have about 3/4" of usable screw length" to fasten a mounting board or shelf anchor. In my case I used a forstner bit to countersink about 1/4" deep into the 1" mounting board screw hole. If the mount board is too thick the screw will never push the bar back to its stop point so the screw will never engage the threads of the bar. This is not a problem if using metal "L" type shelf supports because the metal is generally less than 1/8" and the screw will easily push the bar against the stop and cause it to flip up, allowing the screw to engage the bar threads. Forstner bits make a clean flat bottom hole but pretty much any drill bit larger than the screw head will do.

It's a really, really bad idea to hang any significant weight from a ceiling using ANY kind of drywall anchor. They are designed to hold their rated amount only for walls where the hanging weight is parallel to the wall and in the direction of the downward pull of gravity. Can be very dumb and dangerous if used on a horizontal surface.
