Excellent tutorial. Thank you. As far as automotive applications, Arduino and bread boarding it works extremely well and I would not recommend a cheaper version. As you learn you will find the extra features and reliability become more important and usefull. Price wise you would only save maybe £10 or £20. For automotive use I would recommend one of the plastic/rubber covers to help protect it.

Hi. Great tutorial. Will this scope provide a direct measurement for THD ( from a whole home generator ) or does a person have to calculate that from the discrete harmonics?

@@macdenewf the only other handheld scope I've used is the Hantek 2D42. Haven't had a chance to make a review/tutorial for that one. It is pricier (about $150) but a big jump up in quality - has real buttons and not the annoying scroll wheels. Also much beefier - size of a brick and feels like it. Not sure about THD feature though, don't think it has it.

Thanks for all the info! Great video. How do you set the maximum voltage of the output wave signal? On my DS212 I get VPP of around 400mV. How do you generate, e.g., a saure wave if 0-2V?
@BenFinio
@BenFinio Жыл бұрын
I don't think you can adjust the amplitude of the function generator. If you are only getting 400mV you may be driving too small of a load, causing voltage drop - it cannot source very much current. I'd try connecting the function generator directly to the oscilloscope probe with no circuit in between to test it first. I've seen a noticeable voltage drop even with a 10K resistor as the load.

Will the AC coupling feature let me measure AC-ripple on the car alternator blocking/filtering out DC voltage?
@BenFinio
@BenFinio 2 жыл бұрын
I don't have any experience with automotive use, but in general, the AC coupling feature will remove any DC offset in a signal. However, if all you care about is the peak-to-peak amplitude, that measurement should be the same whether you are set to AC or DC coupling.

if not and you want a tool that does test alternator ripple i know for sure my ancel ba101 battery load tester tests the alternator ripple because i just did the alternator test and was confused on what the ripple test was.again ancel ba101 and costs around $38.make sure you get this model as the cheaper ancel battery load tester thats about $25 doesnt have any charging/cranking tests like the ba101 does.hope that helps.

My opinion on these hasn't changed much since I made this video. We've had some issues over the last couple years with students having trouble with USB connectivity for downloading stored data, but I think the problem was usually something like a bad USB cable.

@BenFinio
@BenFinio 3 жыл бұрын
@@runnybabbit5631 I believe if you are using the built in function generator at a very low frequency and you have it set to normal trigger mode, then yes. Note that it is actually displaying way more data than can fit on the screen at once, and you can scroll side to side using the "x window" option on page 1. So I think at low frequencies it is scanning the whole way across and then doesn't trigger again until it reaches the end. Since you can only see a bit of the screen at the time, this can make it look like it's just freezing.

@BenFinio
@BenFinio 3 жыл бұрын
Hi - I'm not sure what kind of speed/accuracy you need for automotive applications. The manual says it has an analog bandwidth of 1MHz, maximum sampling ratel of 10MSa/s, horizontal sensitivity range of 1uS/div - 2S/div, and vertical sensitivity range of 20mV/div - 10V/div.

@BenFinio
@BenFinio 3 жыл бұрын
@@yurkshirelad Unfortunately I don't remember the details for specific models cheaper than this - I just know they exist, and may have fewer features. For example maybe there is only one measurement channel, or maybe there's no built-in function generator, or it's just a handheld scope with no ability to connect to a PC to export data. However, we use this scope for exactly what you described (RC circuits, op amps, transistors, etc) for homework assignments and labs for college students, so I don't think you can really go wrong with it.
