A small but very important update to your review: with the current DSM release, it is now officially possible to use the NVMe SSD's as a storage volume on the 1522+. You can even split it up to have one SSD be storage and the other one read cache. Also, 32 gigabyte is the officially supported amount of RAM but it does actually work just fine with 64 gigabyte (can confirm from my own 1522+). Regarding transcoding: I have a Raspberry Pi 4 running LibreElec/Kodi which supports all formats I use natively, so no transcoding necessary.

Great work, for this video testing 4K editing with video editors would be a great addon. You could do a 4K video editing test between different units to see which ones perform live editing premiere pro 4K 10bit files and prores as well. I shot lots of 120fps 4K 10bit footage so that would be great if you can test it to see which can do it and not have lag when editing video off the NAS if possible?

I have the RS422+ which have the same cpu as this model and my biggest issue with the cpu is the thermal problem. Dumping a few hundred photos in synology photos will really make this cpu HOT! 🔥🔥🔥 Aside from that thermal problem i think the specs are fine.

You absolutely can use the NVMe ports to create a fast SSD volume, you just have to set it up manually using the command line. I did it on my 918+ and it has worked great for almost a year, including surviving the DSM 7 and 7.1 upgrades intact. It's not supported by Synology of course, but it does work and once it's set up manually you can use the volume in DSM like any other volume. A how-to video on setting it up would be a great addition to your channel. Probably get a lot of traffic too ;)

@@SpaceRexWill I suppose anything's possible, but I'd say the most likely worst-case scenario is you lose the data in the SSD volume. For me, that's not a big issue. I backup anything important and most of the data is easily rebuilt (Plex metadata caches, etc.)

Got to comment; actually a few... I have a Synology DS1515+ that I've had for a long time. In reality, it's my second unit where the first one crashed from some sort of internal fault. Synology replaced it with no questions and it was out of warranty. Real happy about that. I'm a senior on a budget so I replaced the drives almost a year ago instead of purchasing a new unit. I can verify that Seagate Ironwolf Pro 18TB drives work just fine on a DS1515+, so I suspect they will work on most everything Synology makes. It used to be that Seagate was Synology's standard, but apparently something happened at the corporate level. I doubt that anything technical is involved. I can understand comments about CPU utilization issues. I've noticed that Synology's Active Backup software can be a bit of a pig. Seeing 60% CPU when backing up a single machine is common. I'm not encrypting anything either. I also have 8TB memory and this is certainly no issue that I've seen. I also have two 1TB Samsung SSD's installed for read/write caching in slots 1 and 2 (required in these slots on this older unit). When I was considering a unit upgrade I looked at 10GB ethernet closely. The fact of the matter is that I just don't need it. Binding a couple of the existing 1GB ethernet ports is more than adequate in my situation. That Netgear switch you are talking about can take an ethernet adapter in the SFP+ slot though. This should work just fine with copper. I may be in the market for an upgrade next year. I will definitely stay with Synology, BUT I probably will avoid the new DS1522+. Why is simple, I have NO use for power bricks! There are just too many negatives involved with them.

I think they should make something similar to Q-nap. Instead of capping the CPU, putting an i3 in with a GPU, and then they'd be able to have an HDMI out for video playback. The latest lineup is very underwhelming.

I believe they nailed it with this unit. The 2.5gb port and 8GB of RAM paired with a moderately snappy CPU might make many heavy users complain about only one upgradable port, loss of Intel CPU features, too much RAM adding to the purchase cost, etc etc. For the average user, household, or small business looking to just plug a NAS into their existing network, this unit is going to perform exceptionally well and really not face any limits. Plus not needing to worry about upgrading RAM and such makes it a super easy to recommend unit for non tech heavy buyers. Overall it just seems to have nailed the specs for what I'll ignorantly will say are the most common customers for Synology.

1522+ is the latest version of my 2nd Synology 1515+ NAS, which has some known circuit board issues and was replaced with an extended warranty due to an Intel CPU bug a few years back. The replacement recently developed a power-up issue, but it was solved by waiting long enough, like a day or two, it will power up. Once it powers up, it stays up for months, if not years. I used it as a backup NAS for my original Synology NAS, a two-bay + 517 five-bay expansion (expensive) box brought 7 years ago. Overall, the NAS serves my home network well for two users. In a year or two, I may upgrade the next 15XX+ with 4x8T drives and one for spare. The 10G NIC will be interesting, but it may not be necessary for just two users and the 1515+ four 1G NICs combined with a switch may be enough. I am learning 321 back-up the NAS data with this channel's idea, which saves me time. Thanks.

Have it too, thanks to your videos. I have two 20TB Seagate Exos and two 4TB WDRed. Therefore I used a DS218J. What I really hate is noise. The 218J was much quieter. And the thing is the 1522+ has a lot of (unessesary) "lose parts" that amplify the noise. Best example is the cover for the flash m.2, if you remove them it is much more quiet. The quality of the case is in my opinion too low for such a high price.

Thanks for comparing to the DS1621+ at the end of this video. At $699+$150 for the 10GB card = $849 for the DS1522+ vs. $900+$100 for a PCI 10GB card = $1000 for the DS1621+, the price difference of around $150 buys a faster processor for handling multiple connections faster (not saturating the single 10GB connection) and an extra bay in the DS1621+. Really tough choice. Like you said would be a no-brainer if they had included two 2.5GB/s ports on the DS1522+, but they did not. The power supply is built inside the DS1621+ though, right?

You should do a tutorial on a 1552+ and 1621+ for them who use it for Plex (transcoding, heavy file, film transfers from computer, phone etc)! Should they use 2,5G, 5G or 10G from computer an how, cat 5e or 6 cable from the adapter in to the 10G card etc do a complete tutorial (a really good knowhow on everything)!

Hi brother, excellent video, unfortunately I just got my SD 1520+, it is awesome with excellent streaming capabilities, unfortunately my nas got crazy to the point that I have to let the Synology technicians try to fix it remotely, unfortunately they couldn't and we have to reset the network, after that I did ask the technician why went I tried to register my nas and paid for the 2 extra years of warranty the site says I cannot because this ds 1520+ has been discontinued, but is not the case with older models, and the technician told me that this model have a few problems with the hardware and around or after 2 years some of them get broken and for that Synology not only discontinued this ds 1520+ but they also don't want to deal with exchanging this unit, and as this technician told me is being a lot of replacements world wide, unfortunately he recommended me that if I can change it just go and do it, the chances of losing my investment in a short time are big, he recommended me to go to the ds 920+ but as I have 5 drivers I can't, so he say the other solution is or remove 1 drive and get the 920+ or upgrade to the 162xs+, well.... it is a huge chunk of money just swapping, but I think I will, I am not a IT guy or video editor, or with a company with a lots of TBs in info, but I have and planning to have tones of 2k and 4k family videos, photo albums, I have very good knowledge in tech. I know this Ds1621xs+ is probably more than what I need but I love to stream my videos from my phone, without wires, we are a family of 5 and basically all of us save our memories using the photo app, video app, this apps can order everything in chronology order, by day and year, that's why I need something reliable, to preserve my family's memories. Also I just tell you guys all this because I don't want you to lose your information with this 1520+, it is bad, I was really impressed how this guy streams my 4 k video no latency and smooth, now it is up to you guys, if you guys want to confirm this just call this number in the Americas (Synology): 1(425)2963177 , unfortunately this issue is not stated in any Synology information letter, unless I didn't see it, it is bad because most vendors still selling this guy at the regular price and that's not good, I will return this tomorrow at B&H at NYC and will inform them about this information at least I will have some peace in mind, guys be safe, GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!! and spread the VOICE, it is the only way to protect our selfs as a consumers.

Honestly none of those, they are garbage, the 1522 is a newer garbage.... the best for a good price is the 920+ or if you want more future proof but more expensive the Ds1621xs+.... y have this last one, in my case I use it to store and backup all my family pictures and videos, daily I use 5 phone to load my Nas with 2k and 4k videos and pictures, using the Ds drive the pc and the Ds video and Ds photo apps the streaming is very smooth, very powerful, all depends for what you need it in my case I think this machine is to much for just my family but I am ok with it... it is powerful, I will probably make a video Ds1621xs+ showing it in this way to stream videos....I love my Ds1621xs+

You probably already know: it IS possible to make an M.2 Volume with this nas with some community-provided scripts. I did it on my DS918+ and my DS923+. Note with the DS918 that its PCIe 2.0 slot and a really weak CPU, it really struggled. But the DS923+ has the new Ryzen chip and it is very fast with NVMe devices. The DS1522+ has the same CPU, and it will run M.2 SSDs at full speed over 3200MB/sec. Also, you can get 2.5G ethernet cheaply and easily on this. Just get a USB-based adapter, and use community-provided drivers. It works fine on both my synologys but soon i'll be looking to go 10G. Meanwhile 2.5G is awesome.

Few things. A script would really really really really help your videos flow and continuity. It'll take your vids to the next level. Also, don't forget to breath when talking. You can do a voice exercise by going as low as you can, then as high as you can, and it should help your tone. As far as NAS goes, I still think imma grab the 920+. 4 cores means I can potentially run VMs.

The whole breaking timing thing I for sure need to work on. As for the 920+ even though it has 4 cores vs the 2 cores of the 923+ the 923+ has a much more powerful CPU. VMs can share cores so you dont need to worry about running out of number of cores. You will get better performance on the 923

Great review as always. I'm in the market for a new unit, replacing my old DS414. About the drives. You said DS would give me an error or warning just once. At Nascompares he said that if using not officially supported HDD you always see orange warning as "UNVERIFIED". So let's say I go for Ironwolf Pro drives which are not on the compatibility list, but also not on the incompatibility list. What message would i get and will it be permanent? With Ironwolf non pro models there should be no issues or warnings since they are on the compatibility list. Thank you

I'm reading that these are recurring points of failure, and much less reliable (long-lived) than internal power supplies - like the one inside my old reliable DS1513+ or how the DS1621+ is powered. For really cheap electronics from brands you have not heard of external power supplies are often really cheap. From my experience with synology it’s pretty unlikely that it will fail. Not saying I would not prefer an in built. But they tend to be solid quality.

I'm sceptical about the fans being quiet. All Synology units I've tested (two) had fans that made an annoying ticking noise. There are a lot of other users who replaced the fans with Noctua fans for that reason or they found the fans to be too loud. Synology uses the same 92mm fans on a lot of units, so I expect a lot, if not all of them, to make that ticking noise. I could hear it across a living room. Perhaps make a recording of the fan noise so that customers can go to their dealers and demand a unit that is as quiet.

My 1821+ came with 8GB RAM, which I upgraded to 16, and my 1621+ came with 4GB RAM, which sucked because I had to buy a 16GB kit to get it to 16GB, and the 4GB is just sitting on a shelf. I also tossed the Synology 10G card in both (yes, I have a 10G network at home). 4GB on the 1621+ I never understood.

So I have been using the DS1819+ and I have been using it mainly as a plex server. I have been toying with getting a DS1522+ (because I can get one for $600) so that I can have a true mirrored backup in another location. I have about 35TB of media files Current setup is 8x8TB drives RAID 5 in the DS1819+ so I could get 5x14TB drives so that both have 56TB, or do I get the DS920+ for $450, and sacrifice the extra storage space for the future for a built in graphics card to be able to run 4K movies in the future which my current system can't do. The vast majority of my media is in 1080p and 720p. What do you think?

Great video. I moved to the DS1522+ from a Drobo for my Lightroom Photo Library. I am new to NAS & have a basic question: I started with 4 6TB drives. I know if I add a 5th drive with 10TB, I would only get 6TB that are usable. I want to eventually convert all of the current drives to Seagate Iron Wolves. Will my current Raid 5 setup always be capped at 6TB X5? Or if I eventually convert all 5 bays to 10TB would I get full use of the 10TB X5 storage? Or would I have to do a new setup to get full use of the 10TB X5? Bottom line: is there an upgrade path for increasing capacity by increasing drive size? Thanks, Joe

Pretty sure RAID 5 won't allow you to mix drives of different size. You would need to migrate over to SHR to use 10TB (though limited to only using 6TB of the capacity for now, but allowing you to eventually use it as 10TB if you added more 10TB drives later).

@@jmmcg9 No. At least it isn't natively a click and play option to just upgrade in the DSM 7.x software. You *can* do it, but it typically requires a couple free/open bays to put new drives in, format as SHR and install as a new volume, then "move" data from your old volumes to this new one (again, requiring all the data from the old to fit on just the new drives) then delete the old volumes and then move them over to the new pool of disks. So, it can be done, but not easily. And, if you've already got 4 drives in your current system, you have no room to start with a NEW SHR volume of drives unless you can migrate off a couple drives from that old volume/disk pool (meaning you have plenty of spare space). Google Raid 5 to SHR options and you should find ways to do it...

I've had to do something like this before. I bought a 16 Tb drive and an external enclosure. I copied everything from the NAS onto the external drive. Then converted the NAS to SHR. Then copied the data back to the NAS. After that was all done, I added the new 16 TB drive to the NAS Raid.

Bought a 1522 NAS from watching this video plus others, but my write speed goes from 700mb/s down to 400mb/s on back magic disk speed test. Tried all kinds of tips from your videos, but still slows way down. Sometimes stops completely while transferring. Large video files. got in 16gb ram, 2-2tb m2 cards, 10gb card 10gb switch, only have 3 drives in it, but still slows down more than a standard spindle drive. Really disappointed. Will slow down to 20KB/s. yes KB not MB. Read speed is at the nice 1091gb/s speed though.

If you are not planning on running anything really heavy on the NAS (docker, VMs, drive with lots of users) then 1522+ is easily enough. But if you are planning on running a lot the 1621+ has a lot more power under the hood

Saw RS422 and started wondering what you might be talking about. RS422 is also a very old serial port standard. I remember using it a lot in the 80's. I know its off topic but its also curious that Synology would use the same nomenclature.

If you are just looking for photos and you need under ~50 TB of space, the DS920+ is a solid unit that is on sale quite often. If you are looking for an upgrade this unit can be really solid

The only thing would be if you are cutting videos off the NAS. Then the DS1522 with the ability to go 10gig is huge. But if you are just looking for uploading photos you will not see a real difference

Hi Rex Love your stuff - helpful for my newbie self. Comment/question. I put 32gb in my 1621+ and I still get messages at night that Plex/etc ran out of ram (during volume leveling?). I’m assuming a good percentage of people bought this FOR Plex……. (And then I found it can do so much more lol). Maybe I have something setup wrong. I do have all indexing enabled…..(I think it is useful) I also get messages when I am file searching that it is temporarily not available. A retry usually works. I don’t know if that is memory issue or what… but it’s very annoying.. I search constantly….. verifying whether I shady have a movie, etc. I have added at least one VM so I can run windows - needed for a number of things I do). And will be adding some SQL server Dockers (MS, My, PG, Ora) Thanks for the channel !!!!!

That’s really odd. Plex normally does not use much more than 2 gigs, there must be a bug somewhere. I would probably file a bug report with Plex. Sorry couldn’t be much more help, never seen that before

​@@SpaceRexWill on another note -- I started this 1621+ with 2+4+6+6+8 TiB and then moved 9.5 TB of files to it (60% full). Adding a 16 to that ran 3 steps and took 60 hrs. Pushed it up to 80% full (18TB) (oops, that was sooner than I thought)... Replaced the 2 with an 18 -- 4 steps -- 117 hrs. The 4 failed shortly after (so almost exact same data as previous 'repair') ... Replaced it with a 20 -- 5 steps -- *** 255 hrs *** (+ 7 hrs for scrubbing). A knowledgable friend told me that is because I used such small drives in the beginning -- it is limiting how much can be done per pass (like a defrag in low space scenario) and causing a ton more work. He says if I had STARTED with larger drives, it should take less than an hour.... In my scenario, he said if I had built the initial volume with the 8 TiB alone first and __then__ added the others, things would be much smoother. If true, that would be a great tip for those Getting Started videos. He is going to loan me a unit so I can move everything over, rebuild my volume with the large drives, then move everything back. we'll see how that goes . . . .

Thank you for your video. Very insightful. Would love to see how this unit performs vs 920+ especially when using 4K videos. I currently own the DS 1817+ so similar to your DS1819+ and I must say it is performing great. Personally I do not care about Ethernet ports because I will never pull wires and get great wireless speed throughout my house with my eeros 6 pro. The only issue I have with the ds1817+ … it cannot deal with my 4K footage shot by my iPhone when transcoding is needed. I am almost certain the ds920+ would take care of it. Would the DS 1522+ master it? What about surveillance cameras. I would only use 2-3 cameras. I’m sure both 920+ and 1522+ would master it. I’m waiting to see what upgrade will replace the 920+ this year or next. Thank you again.

not sure if you know, but even the 12 drive slot DS cannot transcode 4k properly. Synology don't seem to want NAS to do anything other than being a NAS. Get a proper inexpensive PLEX server to do that, and everything will be great.

Synology does not usually upgrade a unit from one year to the next. Two years is typical. I would probably opt for the xs series where they have Xeon chips running. Feeding 10GBe and PLEX are somewhat CPU intensive.

I had problem about my synology nas And Steve Baker Technical Support Engineer write me about my problem that We are sorry to hear that your DS218 has to be reset. This is likely caused by an issue in the DSM operating-system. We understand that you are worried about losing your data. Please rest assured, your data should not be affected by the reset as the OS and data are stored in separate partitions on the drives. When re-installing the OS, the system should normally not touch the data-partitions of your drives. I beleived and i did what he said now all my data erased omg i shocked after sir Steve Baker dissepeared i am alone there is nothing in my hands Synology is regret bad nas choose qnap there isnt good support for problemss !!! better off building a computer as nas , most motherboard at 100buck , have 4 dim , 2 pcie 16x so you can add gpu and 10gb nic , and have 6 sata drives , and a m.2 and a 100buck cpu will be much more powerfull , ok will be a bit bigger , and will not have hotwap bay , but how often you are gone to changer your dives , and you not so tigth on space with 300 you can have a much better nas thant ths thing that cost 800 with 500 to spair you can get a gpu and 10bg card , and have money to spair on some harddrives

What do you thing about the NEW Situation in the Compatibility List? All 3rd Party Vendors are deleted actually and the incopatibily Warning is very in Front of all Warnigs inklusive that the Health of Volumes is reported as "in danger"! That´s a horrible Situation, iitiated by Synology in 03/2023! Absolute not acceptable any more.. In my Opinion SYNOLOGY NAS Systems can not be used any longer!
