As someone who owns a 2016 MK7, I sadly have to agree. I had high hopes for the Mk8, but this will likely be my last VW. The front end doesn't look right and the seats look like aftermarket sport buckets. I can live with the stubby little dsg shift lever, but touch sensitive buttons on the steering wheel? I know German car designers often do things simply because they can, not because they should, but thats just awful. The point is moot though, this is likely the last GTI that even remotely looks and drives like we expect..V dub seems to be hell bent on becoming a mostly all EV company within 10 years, and internal combustion engine/trans development will come to a halt. RIP GTI, we will always remember what you once were.

Great informative video. Unfortunately all the VAG cars have gone through a cost cutting exercise, seems the accountants are designing the car to some degree instead of the engineers. Can only be due to the Diesel scandal and having to pay out millions on compensation and fines.

Even on my mk7, it's shocking how different the power delivery feels after coding out traction control. In america, they wont be selling the base golf and you can tell the cost cutting has crossed over to the gti at this point. They really took away the value of the gti over the R with this gen.

sorry completely disagree as a former mark7 owner I believe the mark8 is miles better in every aspect and especially the looks! It looks much more "grown up" and modern. the only thing not a fan of is the lack of physical buttons. The drive is SUPERB and feels much more composed and quicker the mark7.My 2 cents

I feel the same my friends, and idk what the hell they did with the mk8 GTI/R🤦‍♂️ the front end looks like some gender neutral uni browed neanderthal, (they actually took almost a direct copy of the BMW Z4 sDrive 30i) the little chicken nugget shift by wire is really bad, they could of at least put the electric razor in the turbo 911’s The touch less crap has gone way way way too far, and someone in the development department of these cars needs to be slapped. These cars are ugly and idk, I’m glad you did this video, I’m almost pissed about how bad the R is and finally they did a upgrade Haldex...I’m hoping someone figures out how to retro fit the mk8 haldex on the mk7/7.5 Need a brutal honest mk8R review...like you and had a 7 6MT and 7.5R DSG was looking forward to the 8’s but so far couldn’t of been let down more...even the nice “play by the rules” car reviewers are having a hard time finding nice things to say or get excited about when they redo reviews and the prices of these car just keep going up, wth...🤦‍♂️

@Adam7890 thats YOUR OPINION and you're entitled to it. The 8R looks miles better in person though I will say that. So reserve your judgement until you've seen/sat in one. The interior is miles cleaner than the old one. They've gone minimalistic. Everybody is different, personally I like it. The performance however speaks for itself. Miles ahead of the MK7. Stage 1 on the 8R will now see 400hp easily. That's stage 2 on an old one.

There is actually an option to turn that light bar off from all the reviews i've seen and the dash is able to display the Navigation map on the dash or both screens at once but you have to pay for the upgraded Navigation pack.

But you're maybe forgetting who the GTI is targeted towards, and it's not young petrol-heads like you, it's middle aged folk like me who need to get something that the wife will not hate and be happy to drive (Type R or Golf R (which I REALLY want)..... no chance mate!), I need something that we can chuck the dogs in the back and tootle down to the shops, and muggins here can have some 'reasonable' fun at the weekend. Getting this car for my Motability and the bloke absolutely roasted the nuts and bolts of it! 🤦🏽‍♂️ The A1 Edition 1 is so much more better but it ultimately came to two things.. price; the GTD was substantially cheaper and The Ride; the GTD on those so called horrible 18’s was a better ride for me.

Made some fair points but there’s a lot of nit picking in this video. It’s objectively a good looking car inside and out and outperforms the previous GTI in every category. That car has its fair share of obvious cost cutting as well. Also, if you’re truly trying to feel what a 4 cyclinder hot hatch is all about for the sake of a review, I would suggest not having 3 heavier looking grown men in the car. Can’t wait to get my hands on one in the states and judge for myself.

OK, I get it: There are a dozen or more things that you, and many others, dislike (OK, "hate!") about the Mk8. This actually is a good thing. This means that -- as has happened with virtually all V-Duds sold in the U.S. in years past -- Volkswagen dealers in the U.S will have to discount them like crazy to move the metal. Then, having saved a ton, it comes down to whether the basics of the car -- chassis, handling, brakes, fit & finish -- provide sufficient reason to buy to buy one. It did with the Mk7.5; it almost certainly will be the case with the Mk8. However, here's where you guys really make out: You can buy a Clubsport! Lucky you! We (in the U.S.) can't. And, IMHO, the Clubsport is the sweet spot for the Mk8. The ("ahem") awkward (OK, damn ugly) lower front fascia on the standard GTI is replaced with the front fascia on the R, which is (again, IMHO) a LOT better. Same with the rear wing. You wouldn't think these two relatively minor aesthetic features would make such a difference in the car's appearance, but they certainly do. A world of difference. And, of course, with the Clubsport you get a much faster car without the weight of the R. A car that's truly fun to drive. Again, lucky you!

I use a Mk7 GTD as a learner car but trying to teach in this they wouldn’t know how to turn the lights on without blinding others. Poor interior and cheap materials used to make them look flash but feel like sandpaper. Overall Mk8 is half cooked piece of meat.

this is basically a North American Golf. All the fit and finish has been this way in NA for a few years. The only thing you said that is not true is the speed. The MK8 will dust a stock MK7.
