I bought one of these a couple years ago. I attached it to my 42cc Echo brush cutter. I used it on very thick blackberry brambles. It cut right through them. I used a chopping motion from the top down, nice and slow, so the chains would mulch everything rather than just cut at the base. Definitely got the job done. The only drawback I see is potential danger to the user. I wore thick chaps, leather boots, a long sleeved sweatshirt, leather arm sleeves for welding, thick leather gloves, an old dirt biking chest protector, and a safety helmet with a visor. I didn't want any metal coming back at me. And while cutting the brambles, I clipped an old metal pipe I couldn't see sticking up from the ground. It sent sparks flying. Thankfully it was winter and just after a rain. But, I must say this thing does work well.
@SuperEraclis3 жыл бұрын
This and similar products with linked metal cutting parts (eg chains) are banned in the EU and unless UK updates its legislation also in UK, This followed a fatal accident in Scotland where the end link of a chain flew off and severed the spinal cord in the neck of a person working away from the operation. Unlike plastic cords and hinged plastic blades the steel links have about 8 times the density and so at the same speed have 8 times the momentum if they are ejected, ie similar to a bullet. This is why only solid cutting blades (as on a brush cutting head) or plastic parts are allowed.

@@causetheplumstasteyum7848 well said. On our estate we have large tracts of land that needs atleast 3 to 4 rounds weeding per year. With around 4-5 weed cutters operating. Since it's a hilly region the best option is this type of weeding machine. The bane of operation was the rope getting cut off too frequently and at times multiple machines stopped to fix the issues. I used a Jeeps accelerator cable instead of rope. It's almost a decade now and it still works without a problem. Yes, almost any machinery can be dangerous. Any accidents arising from them is a negligence on our part. A slip of a screw driver can be harmful or as many of us have experienced a hammered finger while nailing. Steel discs that are made with chainsaw segments around the edge were found to start flying off the disc, as the sand destroyed the rivet heads that were keeping the teeth attached to the steel discs.

Performances are indeed very good on a simple surface (with absence of hard rocks and glass bottles). User Warning notice: Downsides of Chain trimmer head: - When the chain holder is not attached properly, it can detach at a very high speed, thus causing damage to your body parts (legs) - When a user doesn't look after the chain cautiously, when breakage occurs, the length of the chain can rip your legs severely. - If entering in contact with rocks or glass, the debris projected at such a speed can damage your body. The helmet will not be sufficient to assure protection of the face or eyes with such impacts, as rocks, metal and glass will be able to pierce through conventional grilled helmets. A helmet made of reinforced polycarbonate is advised. A body armor or a braided suit is advised. - Note that the wieght of the chain will affect the consumption of the fuel by 20% at least, and will make your engine work by over 20% as well. Be advised that only cautious and informed users should use such advanced methods for trimming.

I had a similar chain trimmer head back in the 90’s. The chain was smaller and not doubled. It would cut the saplings down. I almost cut down a fiberglass streetlight pole trimming the grass around it. Edging was great. One problem. The edging around concrete would wear the chain down and it would sling pieces of metal at high speed. I could never find a replacement head. I figured the Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled the product, UNTIL NOW. It has been resurrected and improved.

This is a good concept, it's about using the right tool for the right job, just like nylon wire is for grass cutting and blades for thick vegitation etc. its application should only be used for overgrown grass etc, i doubt it can be used with thick vegitation as it might either damage the machine or get tangled more often since its less flexible and thicker, if it also came with a clear platic sheild to fit the front end it would be alot safer aswell since anything it hits, for eg a pebble, it will fly with atleast 20× more force. Another downside is It will damage anthing soft like paint, water pipes, plants and fence's where this machine is actualy more handy.

Caution. This tool can be dangerous in case a small metal part (screw) is ejected at high speed.
@johnrobertson75833 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily true...more likely even with a string trimmer the line can hit a rock and its velocity would be higher given it is being struck at the speed of the line tip, which would be over 10 times that of a screw closer to the shaft...youre just jealous that you didnt invent this ...lol
@Azozor92763 жыл бұрын
@@johnrobertson7583 I am not jealous, I believe that this device can be used with caution, as with all devices of this kind; I only wanted to warn of a possible risk when using this device. It is true that the string trimmer with Nylon line is also quite dangerous in some cases, it is true that the wire can throw stones and be very dangerous. I is necessary to be careful with high speed devices that use centrifugal force. Otherwise, your system is efficient and has the advantage of not releasing pieces of plastic into the environment, and that is very interesting.

That's why stihl recalled these and no longer sell them. Their alternative is the 2 plastic piece head instead of the chains.

Great video , after watching it I immediately bought one , best Trimmer i ever used . This thing takes down small saplings like butter , also works great on tall weeds, and very high grass . Doesn't work good on very low grass , which makes sense . Went on my Stihl easy and comes off easy when I need it to Good price for a great product , I highly recommend .
@davi58623 жыл бұрын
I'll leave the same comment in Portuguese and in English the truth is that even the blade wears out and it decreases in size with time imagine this chain when you wear out the pieces and drop a piece without wanting to catch someone is a shot, I particularly I do not recommend
@robertmedzai81633 жыл бұрын
Hi there this seams a good idea but would it be safe on a larger machine say 1 with 2 handles. the 1 your using kooks like a Stihl 55 , great little strimmer they go on for years. I like your vids with good tips. The only thing I would say that your not mowing grass but weeds I cant imagine mowing a proper lawn with that head definately a no no.
@Neo-mw1pp Жыл бұрын
If it fails and it most likely will at some point, it will send those chain links flying at 300mph, could be lethal for persons using the strimmer or nearby

Some countries have made these trimmer heads illegal. Because bigger chance to fail and bigger mortal danger to bystanders if they fail. chains have moving parts and are made for cutting not hitting, and are heavier than line cutter line. When chain break there is chance that single piece of chain flies like bullet piercing some ones artery.
@xevious25013 жыл бұрын
yeah if it were me, despite the strong performance, ide have to pass due to the level of safety. its one thing to have a piece of broken nylon rebound on you. But a chainsaw!!!! no freaking way. youd have to wear some thick leather chaps shin guards and some metal toe boots to see me using that thing.

Bought recently. Works great. But... only on flat surfaces. Otherwise you dig in in the ground and it's causes reductor malfunction or smth else.

You said: *"in all mowing conditions"* but you didn't show what happens to the cutting edge when incidental contact is made i.e. rocks, landscaping, fencing, metal post, etc. We all know this is a common occurrence when using a trimmer. Good video though.
@pushyslayer45613 жыл бұрын
@Cheif Grayfeather its gonna do all that damage anyways over time.. If you notice on a non modified FS on the string guard there is a piece of metal to cut the string.. if you remove the guard, or the metal bit and let your sting be however long it wants it will destroy the gearing system, clutch and possibly the drive shaft over time.. im a Stihl certified tech.. you should find this information in your owners manual
@joshw92773 жыл бұрын
If you have a brushcutter with enough power it can actually cut down a thinner fence post, small to medium rocks literally explode, never hit a metal post though. It's a VERY good idea to make sure you have the rotation pointing away from you. I used a 48cc, 2hp Honda brushcutter.
@DanKoning7773 жыл бұрын
@@joshw9277 // You seem to have forgotten that vegetation is the target, not things; why would you want to: "actually cut down a thinner fence post" which you've install for a purpose? That's an expensive and time consuming way to make a point.
@joshw92773 жыл бұрын
@@DanKoning777 that’s the point. I dramatically underestimated how powerful a 48cc brushcutter and the chain attachment was, and was cutting near the fence when I got distracted for a couple seconds, and chopped the post in half.

They're very heavy for the small gearing in weedeaters, and if one of the small pins fail, it will wrap your leg. These are very unsafe. Use a Sawzall blade.

You need proper leg and boot PPE otherwise these are great and don’t leave microplastics in the environment. These work great on saplings and berry vines. This model that bolts on is good. The threaded versions M10x1.25 LH don’t have the same threads as Stihl M10x1.0 LH.

Why have the chain loops? The backside will never cut anything, it's just dead weight. Just use one segment of chain protruding from each side, not a loop.
@michaelcyr97313 жыл бұрын
I would think it was engineered that way to double the chain retention in the head. The head looks like cast aluminum. The connection of the chain to the head by the pins seems to be the weakest part IMO.

When (not if) the chain breaks, having a loop will keep the chain from flying away from the disc (hopefully) or that extra length will help it cut off your feet...
