Here's the DSLRguide on sound, very useful and on point, *train your ears* people. Simon says. audio-video is a 50:50 .. I would say audio is more like 80%, if a video has bad audio it's unwatchable.. / Chad LaFarge you will like this..

I'm new to the world of video production, but one thing I've almost immediately noticed is that good sound can bring life to the end product. Whereas bad sound can bring dullness. But as a "noob", it's a hard quest to identify and fix what's wrong or missing in your audio track. I didn't even knew we could make the voice more understandable by lowering the mid-range spectrum in the equalizer ;) So, congratulations Simon for that nice and useful video !

Another great video I must say! A little similar to one of your older videos but much more in-depth on the technical side. And it keeps reminding me about how important sound design really is. I also started thinking about a video I've done, which actually could've used a bit more work on the sound design, I guess that is just something we'll need to fix soon. But yet again a great video you've put together and thank you!

I love the timing of finding your channel. I have a new vegan comedy channel and two skits moved into short film feel, so I exploited that, and being a music producer I played more with sound layering etc, and find it so creative and fun. I hope to carve a niche as a comedic writer and performer but reinforce it with technical excellence in audio and production too - I have a long way to go though.......I do it all with an iPod mini mounted with an iographer...some day I must upgrade. So grateful for your thoughtful videos! Cheers from Canada.

Very good example you pointed out with listening to music - i know a lot of people where i say "hey, listen to that tambourine on the left channel in the chours" and they are just like "tambourine? i only hear guitar and drums" It is all about really listening concentraded to sounds and music to train your ears, really good video :-)

Hi Simon! Two questions I would like you to answer or cover on one of your videos: - When you film a short film or a feature, do you recommend recording the audio i an external recorder? And if so, Can you show us the best way to sync the audio later being like an hour of video. - What are the best camera stabilizers you would recommend?
@DSLRguide
@DSLRguide 10 жыл бұрын
I do recommend using dual system sound (external recording) I find the two clips that need syncing, and then use the automatic synchronisation tool in final cut pro x. Premiere has a similar feature. Otherwise you'd need to clap your hands while recording, and match up the clap sound in the audio track with the clap in the video. As far as stabilisers go I haven't really used any. I've heard good things about the glidecam hd-2000.

DSLRguide Thanks for the tips. One more question. What are the best ways to shoot knowing you will latter add black bars to give it the widescreen film look? Is there any technique to know what my final image will look in production? By the way you are becoming one of my favourite channels! Keep it up! PD: Sorry if my english is not good im from Argentina.
@DSLRguide
@DSLRguide 10 жыл бұрын
***** I use magic lantern which has a feature to 'overlay' the black bars. Otherwise you'd need a monitor which has the same feature. Or you could use gaffers tape which isn't ideal.

A great way to teach yourself sound design is just to borrow a short scene from a film you like and try to recreate the whole thing. A similar idea to what you suggested but aimed more towards sound design and foley work. Building a library of recordings to use is not a small task so better get at it!

I think it would be interesting, if for one episode, you shoot it on a lower end camcorder, or point and shoot to back-up your statements of lighting, and importance of sound (of course you would still use your normal audio set-up, just switch the cameras)

This was excellent! The whole thing was a nice pace and the info was useful. I totally agree about music; I've been a musician for years, and so I already have a decent grounding in some audio production (compression/eq, etc), and it really helps. Also, I like how calm your delivery is. I'm so sick of watching shouty, intense, Americans try to act dynamic, and end up giving the viewer a headache! The music at the end also really matched the tone and pace of the video. One criticism, is just to stick to a tighter script on the advice, to avoid repeating yourself. Subbed!

Hey, I just came across your channel and subscribed. Seems you have some interesting videos going on! Just finished the one on intro's and will now check out this one. One little thing I noticed is, you seem to want to come across very animated with your hands. Although, generally speaking, hand gestures are a great way to enhance communication (teachers, public speakers, presidents, etc. use it; it's very effective to help get something across), you seem overly focussed on making sure your hands are not being kept still I feel like though (as if it's a new 'tool' you've learned about and are eager to apply it). I think that way it becomes less effective (you can't put emphasis on one thing in particular if you more or less are already emphasizing everything) and if you added a little more calm to it, it would come across slightly more natural and a tad bit less nervous? Just my humble opinion and hopefully helpful advice. ;) Great job on the channel and videos! Will check out more of it these days.

I'm very happy to hear that you're enjoying the videos so far! Haha, I'm not a natural presenter - if you ever want proof just go back and watch my early videos. When i'm speaking i'm focusing on saying the right thing and trying to be less monotone, and I think somewhere along the line i've developed the habit for hand gestures. I see your point (thank you for being so polite about it!) although it might take a little while for me to break the habit. Thanks!

DSLRguide Actually, you're doing a great job presenting. You're very understandable. Also, you seem to have a very good understanding of what's really important with filmmaking, something that others do not really get down even though they've been in the bizz for far much longer. It's not just about doing things, it's more about the motivation behind the things you do. And you get that. Been already going through some of the other videos and there's some great stuff there. Keep it up!

Hi Simon, I really enjoy your videos and I think I'm like you, a young filmmaker and I could learn very much from your videos. Thank You. Why do you still record your main audio with the Rode VM+VMP when you've the opportunity to record XLRs with your ZOOM H5? Are you happy with the Quality of the 3.5mm jack mics or are you going to buy a XLR mic?
@DSLRguide
@DSLRguide 10 жыл бұрын
I'm very glad you like the videos! The main reason is that money doesn't grow on trees! I have to say i'm looking to upgrade to XLR mics if only for the fact that 3.5mm is such a flimsy mount, and if it were to get a short during a shoot it would be a big loss. So i'll probably put the NTG-2 pretty high up on my future purchases list.
@FloStar3000
@FloStar3000 10 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. My only gift this christmas was the NTG-2. I went for it, because I had the great luck, that an old filmmaker gave me his Tascam DR-60D. He made many films since Super 8 and now he reduces his amount of gear, which is very good to me. This setup with the DR-60D under the camera and the NTG-2 on top is pretty heavy, but going for a Videomic Pro didn't made any sense. I also bought the mic, because audio is so important and I had no audio recording device except my friends Zoom H1, which wasn't mine, obviously. I still only have the kit lens. I'm looking forward to buy either the Tamron 17-50 VC if I can get it under 250€, a Sigma in this zoom range or some of the other affordable wideangle lenses. Or do you think I should rather invest in lighting? I'm going to build an LED by myself, but I am not sure about how iportant the CRI will be with those cheap LEDs.
@DSLRguide
@DSLRguide 10 жыл бұрын
FloStar3000 sounds like you have some very generous people around you! Definitely go for lighting before lenses. I'd save up and take a look at the aputure al-528S LEDs, or some fluorescent light fixtures. All my recommendations can be found here: dslrguide.tv/lighting-and-grip

Bad ass outro! Do you think the blue spark is a microphone I can use for my kind of setup, right now i have a rode rycote or the rode video mic as it's also called. I was planning to buy a zoom H1 both to get the rode mic closer and actually to use it as a microphone sometimes as well. I have been planning to buy a new mic for a while but I'm not sure what to buy, of course I want to buy the blue spark more than the zoom H1, but I don't know what's best for my kind of setup, I do very different videos than you do, I'm one of the many MKBHD fans so I'm making tech videos, the reason I have heard about the blue spark is because of him. You're a great guy, and I like learning things in the video section of you thanks for all the helpful tips!
@DSLRguide
@DSLRguide 10 жыл бұрын
if you don't have a zoom h1 then i'm assuming your connecting the mic to a computer for recording? if that's the case and you're happy with that setup then go for the spark, but I would have thought the portability of an audio recorder like the zoom h1 would be a worthwhile investment. if you're connecting your mics directly into the camera, then i'd definitely advise buying a zoom.

Great vid! I have an H4 Zoom and I want to buy a shotgun mic. What one do you recommend? What's the best bang for my buck if I don't have $800 to spend? Thanks!

Tube Banker rode NTG-2 is a pretty solid option :) www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00093ESSI/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00093ESSI&linkCode=as2&tag=ds040f-20&linkId=E2GPCMX7KUCOJKOL

Tube Banker I'm no expert, but from the physics I know, I'd say the NTG-1 would be less noisy than the NTG-2, because it has less internal circuitry (i.e. the battery power system). If you have the H4 already, you don't necessarily need a mic that powers itself, as the Zoom gives 48V of phantom power! :)

Just one question which is not linked with the topic of this video: iPhone vs Samsung or if you have favourite phone?
@DSLRguide
@DSLRguide 10 жыл бұрын
I don't really care about phones! Only just got a cheap windows smartphone, until now i've always preferred to get audio + lighting gear instead of spending lots on phones.
@FloStar3000
@FloStar3000 10 жыл бұрын
Right choice Simon. Why investing 700 bucks in a phone that lasts 2 years when you can buy many pieces of film gear for the money that last at least 5 years. For example the Canon 600D was released in 2010 or so and it's still used by many filmmakers like Simon and me. I've got an iPhone 4 that no one would use anymore because it is slower, heavier, thicker and smaller than the new iPhones and there are no software updates for this phone. I didn't spend any money for entertainment electronic this year but about 400€ for film gear. Get a phone that works as long as it can. Doesn't matter if iPhone or Samsung. I personally wouldn't get me a Samsung because i think it's overpriced against the other solid Android phones you can get from about 200€

Hey, I like the videos they are very informative. I was wondering if you are ever going to do an episode on client payments and how you go about that whole situation. Do you use Paypal, do they pay upfront cash, and how do you charge them?
@DSLRguide
@DSLRguide 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks Adler! If you haven't seen it already, I did make a video that answers some of those questions: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3Tdk4KJgrSVaZI I get paid upfront usually by check. I charge based on how many hours I think the project will take, and decide an hourly rate based how much I predict they would be happy to pay (businesses will usually pay more than a couple hiring you for filming weddings).

Hey Simon, long time viewer first time commenting. You have great quality in your videos noticed you own a Tamron 17-50. Would you recommend this lens to film for shorting dramatic narrative that I will be submitting to a local film festival? is the quality good? how does it handle low light? would you recommend something else? Thanks.
@DSLRguide
@DSLRguide 10 жыл бұрын
The tamron is great because it's f/2.8 (good lowlight / shallow depth of field) and has a nice zoom range making it very versatile. If you have the budget I would recommend the tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC but the 17-50 still more than good enough.

I may be wrong because I'm only 12 but could u have mentioned that if doing interviews and recording the voice on a mic, record ambient sound on its own to put as background noise so it sounds more realistic. It may be wrong to put in this video. Just a theory of mine. Also, would u advise taking media as a degree on its own or should u add something in like IT as a backup. Just interested because I know that lots of people want to do media and it is very competitive. Thx.
@DSLRguide
@DSLRguide 10 жыл бұрын
I did mention using 'room tone' (another word for ambient background noise) to blend different shots together / cover up silence. You're right that if I was filming an interview outdoors, I might decide to add some birds singing as ambient sound for example. Choosing to study film / media or not is a tough decision. Most of the things you can learn from youtube and real world filmmaking experience. But film school is a great opportunity to meet like minded creative people, which could be invaluable to your career. This article goes over the pros and cons very nicely:nofilmschool.com/2013/02/film-school-ryan-e-walters

Please help! Rode NTG 2: I have it phantom powered connected with xlr to 3,5mm (balanced to unbalanced) and I have to boost the audio level up to +33 db to get a normal signal. Is this the fault of the microphone jack of my 600d?
@DSLRguide
@DSLRguide 10 жыл бұрын
I think you'd be better off connecting the NTG 2 into an audio recorder or at least through a preamp. The preamps in the 600D are awful, so will have lots of noise. I'm not exactly sure about your exact problem, but using an audio recorder certainly wouldn't hurt.
@FrozenSkiller

DSLRguide Can you recommend one? Cause the Zoom stuff seems to have bad preamps too! The Tascam DR 60D Mk2 seems to be good and I have a audio interface from them!

I'm no expert but the zoom h5 or h6 and tascam dr60d are pretty similar in quality as far as i've heard. I use the zoom h5 and am extremely pleased with it.

Nice video !! I am from Germany, so my english is not the best ;) Do you think it is worth buying the rode ntg 2 and the zoom h4n or would it be better to go with the Rode video mic pro and the zoom h1.
@DSLRguide

definitely NTG with h4n (or even better, the H5). it's worth investing in audio, buy less lenses and more audio gear is my advice.

Nice video ! I just have a question, if I want to record some extra sound, do I need a recorder like the zoom h1 ? Will the sound quality be good if I put the microphone on the camera, record a video and just keep the sound ?
@DSLRguide
@DSLRguide 10 жыл бұрын
For best results, plug microphones into an audio recorder like the zoom h1. This will result in a lower level of noise (hiss) plus it gives you better options for using headphones, makes it easier to set your levels (volume) without going into the camera menus. If you use a microphone with a +20dB setting (like the videomic pro) then you can sort of get good results straight into the camera, but I'd still advise getting a long wire with a boom pole so you can get the mic close to the source.

DSLRguide Thank you for the answer! Sadly on the rode videomic rycote I don't have the +20db and for now I can't afford a rode videomic pro or a zoom h1 ... Lol nevermind, I will add the zoom H1 to my gear later haha ! Again thanks for the answers, I love your videos, it's perfect for me to learn because I can't go to film school right now I'm only 13 ... :)

absolutely. there will be less hiss, and more 'resolution' - a bit like the difference between 1080p compared to 720p.
