What some see as a piece of firewood some make a beautiful work of art. You've done that.

Thanks as always Henry. I spotted that knot when I first took delivery of the oak a few years back, I knew that it could be used in a nice way but waited till I had a solid idea before deciding what to do with it. Glad that you enjoyed the vid mate. :)

Excellent video, as always. And even more inspiring is the fact that your workshop and tools are "real". I am sure that each and every one of us has a box of old "bits that might come in handy one day" that we have been lugging around every house move for the last 30 years! Have a good one!
@dsnerv7 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Dennis. Yes your right, everyone of us has at least 1 (if not more) "Junk" boxes in there house. I know that I have a few of them stacked up in dark corners of the workshop covered in spider webs for sure. I get away with it because I cant be accused of hording old bits if I find a use for some of them from time to time haha. :) Glad that you enjoyed the video.

Lovely design. Makes me think of castles and knights with that black iron and solid wood. Iv been trying to get my hands on free unwanted timber such as what you used but with no joy plus then I'd have to dry it out an I'm quite impatient. Have u any tips on getting that sort of timber cheap as poss please
@dsnerv7 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott. That's a great question. I have a few tips on getting your hands on some free / cheap wood that might help you out a little. Really there are a few good places you can go but it all depends on how easy they would be for you to get to..... First place of call would be the dump or reclamation yards. It will take an hour or 2 but if you stand by the wood bins there will be plenty of people coming past with old hardwood furniture that can be broken down and reused. It will be free cos they are dumping it and fully dry as it will have most likely have come directly from there home. Just ask the people if you could take it, break it down then and there as you wait for the next item of interest and load it up. Its a great way to get hardware as well (decorative hinges and brackets etc etc). The next place you could try is to contact a local scaffolding company. Most of the time they have scaffold planks that they no longer use locked away in storage and are willing to part with them for a small cost. If you do a few deals with them then you might be lucky enough to convince them to contact you when ever they are removing some hardwood roofing beams as well. It costs them money to skip the beams so just ask if they can be put to one side and then pop over when you are free to collect. The very best advice though is just to make sure that all your friends and family know that you are looking for hardwood...... You will be amazed at how many people know someone that knows someone etc etc and you will soon be spoilt for choice (so much so that you can even talk them down on prises if they are asking for anything at all) Hope that helps a bit mate. :)

Lovely ..but I think I would Like to have one with the natural outter wood tree bark still attached.. more rustic ;)
@dsnerv7 жыл бұрын
I did consider going down that path myself but as this was going to end up as a gift for my better half I decided that a cleaner look would work best to her tastes. :)

At first taking the time to make a template confused me but you are going to make a few and sell them? That would make the effort of the template worth it. I love the finished look.
@dsnerv7 жыл бұрын
Hey Nelson. Yeah all the added extras on this project made the video run longer than I expected so I did not film a bit with me talking to the camera explaining a few things. I can get the candles / candle glass locally and I planed to have this larger one as a gift for my girlfriend.... The template will be used to make more smaller versions (2 candle on each) for my friends and family this Christmas. Hopefully they will appreciate them. :)

What were the nipply nails from? I've seen plastic ones like that for doing foam sheets on houses, but never metal ones. ? Nice job btw :)
@dsnerv7 жыл бұрын
Hey HIGH CALIBER Honestly I have no idea what there main use is for. I just wanted some metal stud work on the project, went to my local hardware store and liked the look of them so I grabbed a few. Loving the "nipply nails" name you gave them by the way haha.

I've been buying similar ones at lee valley, but they are always out of stock...Oh Iv'e done some of the hammered-look hardware like you used, I use liquid gun-blueing on the bare steel, it works really well. Love the projects, I grab a scotch and watch them all the way through, cheers!

This is British craftsmanship at its absolute finest. Studio a walking death trap, fag out the mouth, no push sticks for the table saw, no dust mask, safety goggles... etc etc. I mean, I enjoy the sanatised US wordworking videos, but this puts the Great back into Britain. 👍 proud of you brother 👏

Glad that you enjoyed the video Costanza. I most definitely don't follow safe workshop procedures in any of my videos but its the way I am more comfortable and relaxed when creating stuff. We have the free NHS here so might as well take full advantage of it when I loose a finger or 2 lol

Awesome piece Mate. The knot in the wood could not be in a better position, and the rivet like nails give the piece such a rustic look. I've been following your channel for a while now and I know its your personal preference but a good work bench is in order, just saying cause working on your knees for long periods isn't exactly comfortable. But again a personal preference.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed the project Karan. Normally working on floor level is fine for me.... It makes things easy to move around, take a step back to evaluate a project and works well with my rather messy style of working. Though I must say that I throughout this project I was (and still am) feeling quite unwell so being on a cold floor in that way was not the best for my health. I think you are correct and I will find myself a spare scrap table for the time being to work on....... Give things a try and see if I don't revert to working back on the floor again. Thanks for the advice. :)
