Starset has an amazing aesthetic and narrative to their music and Dustin Bates is so very interesting in how he goes about it. Yet, I always felt, since I discovered them, that he seemed to carry so much of Chester Bennington's spirit, his singing voice so very strikingly similar to him.. But in such a good way. In the end, Dustin is doing his own thing and singing in his own way, no matter how alike they sound to me at times. Having said this, Yes I would honestly say, he sings like an angel and screams like a demon, just like Bennington always did, may he rest in peace. I hope Starset, as well as Bates, go far in the industry and maybe one day, we'll get to hear Starset cover some of Linkin Park's work too :).

people say he can’t sing but he actually nailed it. he has a type of dialect/accent/whatever you wanna call it when he sings, though. so it’s not that he “can’t sing,” it’s that he sounds different. sure he had like 2 or 3 notes where we he was a tiny bit off, but there’s no such thing as perfection anyways.

The "You couldn't do better." argument is such a bullshit argument, I'm shocked so many people use it. I do agree however, that Dustin was pretty good in this performence. His imperfections were barely noticible, and this is a difficult song.

@@MyEpicAnime That’s not the point though. Using the “you couldn’t do better” as an actual response in a debate/argument in referral to someone’s criticism is such an obnoxious way to shut it down. I don’t have to be a cook to know when food tastes really bad. Could I do better? Probably not but that doesn’t mean I can’t recognize when something is of poor quality. It’s incredibly condescending and obnoxious to respond with “you couldn’t do better” because it shows how insecure people are with regards to criticism, or they’re so immature as to refuse to acknowledge any flaws with the things they like, and pretending they’re perfect.

I just stumbled over this video and remembered the first acoustic version I listened to about three months ago. They, especially Dustin, evolved so beautifully and I had the honor to go on their support concert for Breaking Benjamin in Munich and I loved it! I really, really hope they come back to Europe as headliners! :)

And we were bold Over the world We were flying through the satellites We had ahold Of the lightning strikes When we should have been afraid of heights And I was trying just to get you And now I'm dying to forget you Cause I knew I couldn't catch you So I left the sky And I fell behind We were one in the same Running like moths to the flame You'd hang on every word I'd say But now they only ricochet We were falling away You left me with a bittersweet taste But when I send my heart your way It bounces off the walls you made Ricochet If I was whole I'd turn right now I'd forget it and just walk away Cause I've been told That I'm dragging it out But I've been dying just to see your face And all I wanted was to say "goodbye" Into the fortress and you're stuck behind And in the silence now I realize That after all I built the wall We were one in the same Running like moths to the flame You'd hang on every word I'd say But now they only ricochet You were falling away You left me with a bittersweet taste But when I send my heart your way It bounces off the walls you made Ricochet All these broken souls They never make me whole They don't, they don't know my heart They don't know my heart All these broken souls Each one more beautiful They don't, they don't know my heart They don't know my heart I'll send out my soul To worlds more beautiful But they won't, they won't know my heart It's the darkest part We were one in the same Running like moths to the flame You'd hang on every word I'd say But now they only ricochet You were falling away You left me with a bittersweet taste But when I send my heart your way It bounces off the walls you made Ricochet

Dustin is SUCH an amazing vocalist. He's just, too fucking stiff ya feel? Like, his technique needs to loosen up some. Like, it looks like he's putting a hella lot of effort into singing. Kind of one of those things with the saying "Work smarter, not harder." I am only a tubist, and I don't have too much vocal training. But, he just puts in too much effort into singing it looks like. They're still a very young band, only been around since what? 2012? And they got got popular FAST. So, he just needs to refind his style. Though, he has improved a bit, he still has some ways to go it seems. Another key point I wanna touch on, his stamina is SOOOO fucking weak. If you noticed, at the start he sounded SO FUCKING GOOD! And towards the end, he just sounded like his tone just fell out, ya feel? Had more of a soft, whispering tone to it. Hell, I'd hanker to say half his problems is his stamina.
