Day one of Yak-A-Bass Tournament of Champions at Lake Berryessa. With a cold front coming through and blue bird skies made for a tough day of fishing. Fish that were found up shallow or near the surface busting were non existent on this day. I found fish in the 40-50ft range and spooned a good limit out of them. Bites were far and few but we were able to make it into the top 5 giving us a good chance for day 2.
Links to the lures I used in the video.

You are kicking ass old school. I used to hop Hopkins spoons off every point to find cold water fish at, Silverwood, Skinner, Puddingstone, Naciemento, etc.... And yes, I hooked my share of Squawfish. Thanks for bringing back some 30 plus year memories.

What separates Damian from the rest of the pack is the use and understanding of electronics! He's putting his bait on top of the fish, instead of casting to an area where you might think there is fish.

I disagree man, those giant largemouths are definitely up shallow on bluegills in the grass. The majority of the average sized fish are deep chasing shad. Greg played the high risk, high reward and thats usually the way how you win tournaments. Would not have been surprised if he bagged 90+ inches.

This is how you fish in the Fall on a Reservoir style lake!!!! I spent years fishing in So Cal where I grew up and we Always Spooned / Jigged with Rapala Ice Jigs, Hopkin spoons, Kastmasters, Little George spinners or small Darter heads / Bead heads and soft plastic minnow style baits and would catch them offShore or off Deep Points with Big Drop Off Ledges and catch the Bass suspended where they were feeding off of Baitfish!!!! And believe it or not at Castaic Lake back when it was a Great Lake to fish in the Late 80’s and Early 90’s we would actually catch them in as deep as 70-90 ft of water and they would come up after being caught with there Air Bladder all blown up and we would actually use big needles 💉 used for spinal taps and you would stick it into the sides of the bass at an exact location to release the Air so they could swim back down to the deeper water, because if you didn’t do this they would just Float and could not go back down because they were so filled with Air and every now and then there. Eyes 👀 were even popped out very similar to like what you could if you went RockCod fishing 🎣 in Saltwater. This style of fishing at either Lake Castaic or Pyramid lake was usually only done during November through January and a little bit into February. We would just kill ‘em this way during are WonBass and ABA tournaments. Anyways, you did an Awesome Job Damien, you can tell your fishing different then everyone and your style is why your catching them in these style of body of water lakes, and the tackle and your presentation is what does it. I grew up fishing and started doing tournaments when I was 14 and grew up on clear deep man made lakes and your style is very Similar to what myself and my Old Long Time friend Aaron use to do Great Job. Keep it up. Have a blessed week Damien 🙏👍

You don't have to fizz those fish from down deep?
@dthao92
@dthao92 3 жыл бұрын
No, only if you keep them out of the water too long. If you release them pretty quick they will be able to swim back down and be alright. These fish are constantly moving up and down in the water column so they aren’t really affected by it. Once water temp really drops and these fish aren’t chasing bait to the surface, that’s when you will need to start fizzing a few of them

I have, didn't seem to work for me on this lake. Most of the bites were reaction bites since they weren't really chasing. Just cruising along in 40-50ft. That spoon was able to trigger them.

If y'all watch Greg Blanchard's, Tas, and Damian's Berryessa tournament video, y'all will understand why Greg and his pals had such a struggle catching fish and didn't do so well in the tournament. Greg and his pals focused more on shallow waters while Damian and Tas were more focused on deeper offshore waters. Due to temperature drop during this late summer/early fall, most of the fish and the big fish have moved out towards deeper, more stable, more comfortable water. Damian and Tas fished deeper water targeting those fishes.

Dang that was a deep water clinic for sure. Didn't realize you were have to chase the fish around. So I'm trying to piece together my boat electronics. Mine came with a generic finder at console. Installed Garmin with live scope on bow. What's your take on top three? Why you choose Lowrance over Garmin and Humminbird?
@dthao92
@dthao92 3 жыл бұрын
I have both Lowrance and Garmin. I like my Lowrance for the traditional stuff like mapping and 2D and how it’s really user freindly. I use my Garmin solely for panoptix. I just think that their forward facing sonar is more clear compared to Lowrance and humminbird.
