well there is more, in bts songs there is one obvious meaning that normal ppl who just want to enjoy surface of the song can enjoy so the girl can be the girl , then there is a deeper and then the deeper meaning, u can think of girl as any important person u want and then there is anima and animus which this can refer to that too, since there is a theory that the girls in highlight reels are their anima.

i think "girl" can also refer to not even a person. there's the lyrics "you're my everything, i hate you" and they talk about loving/needing something even though it'll hurt them - makes me think of substance addiction

Originally "I need u" was supposed to have the lyrics "I need u friend" instead of "I need u girl". The lyrics are supposed to be about their friendship. Keep looking into more of their storyline. 💜💜💜

When these started coming out, sometimes there were months in between MVs. We worked on this for years (and the story is still going), with people from all over the world. These are where you see that Suga is always connected with fire, Jimin with water, etc... And you see that the boys are paired up (RM and V, Suga and Jungkook, Jimin and JHope) except that Jin is separated. I won't give away the story, but you will see these carried on through many MVs/highlight reels, etc....

Once you're all caught up on the music videos, you should watch a video called BTS Storyline Summary and Explanation by xCeleste. She does a really amazing job connecting everything from their music videos, book of notes, and their webtoon. It's really complicated if you try to sort it out on your own (trust me I've spent hours stressing over it during Wings era lmao) and I think her explanations are always spot on.

The prologue should have come before run... it picks up after V murdered his father and then him committing suicide by jumping of the under construction bridge. That's why "Run" start with him falling into water and him drowning throughout the MV.

I don't exactly agree that their MVs don't match the lyrics. I can think of many where they do match perfectly Dope, N.O, Boy In Luv, Shadow, etc. I also think Run matches perfectly. I think most of their videos even if they aren't specifically matching the lyrics convey the general feeling of the lyrics quite well I Need U, Fake Love, DNA, BS&T, etc. And let's be honest, it's actually more common in general for all artists' music videos to not really have much to do with the lyrics. Matching the video and lyrics is the exception. (BTW there actually was one girl in I Need U, she's in the background of the stabbing scene)

that "girl" is Taehyung sister from storyline. in the first storyline, when boys had their traumas from childhood lyrics really have not much relations with what is going on the screen, but I don't think, it is a problem. Lyrics "version" becomes like a BGM for a movie. in the second storyline if it is possible to call it like this, where they talk about human psycho, lyrics are connected with view on the screen more

Also, the original lyric for I need U was supposed to be just "I need you.." and not "I need you, girl", but they tagged the girl part on later, because that made for a better melody. If you take it as just I need you, then it matches perfectly well with the video, since the members need each other in a sense. Cause whenever they are together they seem to be happy and partying, but the scenes where they are alone, are usually sad.

the prologue was meant to go between these haha that aside, the lyrics of I need u actually fit the storyline quite well, the more you know about it - - it's better to think of 'girl' in this context as an abstract concept of need. there's the song as it stands on its own, and then there's a extra layer of meaning within the context of the story. ( looking back on it from further along in the story, the use of girl is actually really ironic, but that's for later probably... 😜) the story has a chronology but it's not told in a linear fashion. i need u is not really the beginning. once you understand the beginning and then you look back at i need u + prologue + run, the lyrics make sense.

I can do some explanation for the I need u.Actually they are some teenagers who is facing different problems and they are trying to escape reality by being together.That 'i need you girl' is a line that means "I need someone".Next is 'Run',they are trying to escape reality by being a rebel.As a teenager they are being reckless.When RM and V got arrested,RM assures V that everything will be fine so he smiled at him.While jungkook tries to stop Suga from abusing his self and they ended up fighting.J-hope and jimin are known for their happy images.They are the happy pill of the group.And Jin is their guide that's why he's always alone in the mv's.As the eldest he is the most mature of them.In these videos,they are showing the life of teenagers.The recklessness,the problems and the escape,every teenagers are facing.

well jimin and jhope arent happy pills in the story line, jimin is struggling with his childhood drama, since it wouldnt be in the MVs I will say a bit about it, he saw something when he was very young and he has a big trauma and he is mostly hospitalized and he attempt suicide many time. and jhope also has a childhood trauma his mom abandoned him with a snicker bar and he has a medical condition, and about jin , its not about him being a guide , the whole story line is about jin's role and (since ppl spoiled it before in comments and he knows) its about him trying to correct the mistakes and save everyone.

Oh DT, my guy!! you finally are entering into the most chaotic, beautiful and fkn complex era of bts! the hyyh era is something that really changes you as an army, will make you see bts in a whole different light and perspective, and the way the storyline will, slowly but surely, make so much sense after you dive into the rest of the videos + 'the notes' and everything related to it, then you will know why bts is and give a whole another level of artistry. I'm honestly so excited for you to see everything else that is waiting for you: the notes, the 'save me' webtoon, short films, highlight reels etc, they have a lot of content connected and it seems like is not stopping anytime soon??? like i swear we've been waiting for a closure since forever but yeah, it's bts lmao. One of the things i'd like you to know is that the way bts works with their storylines is very peculiar bc just like you mentioned "why their lyrics don't seem to make sense with/relate to the video?" well, they have said in the past that they like that people get their own pov about both lyrics and visuals, even them don't know fully how the hell their storyline got so complex through the years lol but yeah, is just a matter of interpreting the things your own way bc that's why art is subjective, isn't?. However, i must say that even if they like people relating to the storyline, there's always a twist! even if the lyrics don't seem to correlate to the mv at first listen/watch, they do (most of the times)! you'll notice it once you see the rest of the videos, which reminds me that please please please go watch "on stage: the prologue" (search fot the one with eng subtitles) it's one of the most important short films that goes with I need u and Run it's literally a trilogy, then you should see the rest of the short films (the ones from wings era that are short films for their solo songs), and then the highlight reels AND THEN euphoria: wonder and... Gosh im talking too much sajhkj bui promise you that is something beyond words! For me, in I NEED U, I replace the word “girl” with my “vice”.... insert whatever is currently debilitating you in your life......”I need you ______.” And the rest fits PERFECTLY! That’s how I relate to the song and music video together 💜 when I watch any of their content I always watch without the subtitles first...because their music and imagery are sooooo powerful on their own. Basics: Group of boys meet during detention at school one day, become basically brothers, do some rebellious youthful things, slowly tragedy and hardships get to each of them and they break apart... but something special happens to Jin that leads to him attempting to save them all. Basically these 2 videos show that the boys need each other, but as they're pulled apart they each fall to their hardships. RM as you noticed is actually living in poverty, so yes he has a secret - as the sort of leader figure for the boys he's living alone in a shipping container and don't want anyone to know. The others you can see kinda obviously what happened to them. As others have posted too, I Need U wasn't meant to be about a girl, but who could resist putting the word "girl" there, it sounds too right! Plus the storyline is more visual focused, songs are meant to just capture the mood and need to each stand up as their own track without the video so that's why it can't be too similar naturally...

So i would gladly want to guide and join you through this.. ill just comment in every video you do to some point to confirm and add😉This MV have so much symbolism regarding depression. Most of these struggles targets towards the teenagers. this about youth and adulthood. I Need U started the whole Youth series in the BTS universe. The MV mainly shows different coping mechanism of teenagers undergoing such depression in their own way. They are seen happy and having fun if they are together representing their bond and friendship. But on their own they have their own struggles to deal with. #1 I Need U( as you were saying it was a gloomy video-it showed the back story of each members going thru depression & suicidal thoughts. Jungkook letting himself getting beat up in the alley& we see a clip where he is about to get hit by a car (could represent youth feeling helpless and powerless to do anything and just lets it be), Yoongi/Suga is w the lighter and ends up burning himself inside a room (also represent hopelessness and anger as fire will be an element of his all throughout and suicide by arson) we will get to know why he choose seeting himself on fire as his choice), RM w his lollipop (as it turns out it is cigarettes* could represent addiction as smoking is a habit formed in the early teens) working in the gas station encountering a rude customer who throws away money to him( another spectrum of people who choose addiction as a way out of things), RM who is always with Taehyung/V who likes to vandalize and in the later end, went home seeing his sister getting beat up by his dad, in anger he hits his dad w a bottle and then out of rage stabbed him w the broken bottle. You can see his anguish and fear for realizing what he had done. Notice the scene before he enters and in the beginning, bottles of beer was there representing he is a victim of abuse due to alcholism or alchol addiction by his father. (This could represent pent up anger resulting to such crimes out of hatred&abuse which he largely regrets in the end) Jimin in a tub (we still dont know why) lighting a photo. You will know what photo he lights on the prologue ( also contemplating initially and decided to die by drowning himself) with Jhope who overdosed w pills (representing drug addiction and suicide by overdosing) and we saw fainting on the bridge(will later on know he has condition due to traumatic experience, will tell you on the next video) lastly Jin always has those 6 petals w him( and yes most probably represents the members, those petals are lilies that in korean culture also represent mourning for a loss of a friend or family) and he is seen always wearing white. He is a room depressed and in pain in bed we are yet to know why. It will get confusing and mindboggling in the next videos too but just keep in mind the symbolism and yes the music is always great but the lyrics as you know may sound like a love song but bts is known not to sing much about just purely about a girl but this could mean dream and bond/friendship. @DTParker, in the song 'I Need U', they are showing that because of their loved ones leaving them without a definite decision on their feelings, the boys lives have been reduced to this state of depression and hardships. At one point the lyrics say, "Why do I need you when I know it hurts me..." meaning that because of this unfulfilled feeling they have for this special person in their hearts, they feel that they have no other reason to live. Then later in the video where you see them together laughing and just being happy together, this is when they realized that even though they do not feel like living without that special someone, they've found others (the boys) who are going through the same thing , so they use the realization that they are not alone to begin overcoming their different forms of depression, methods of self-harm, and feelings of self-loathing.

First of all, I love your videos, I can see in your eyes that you are, sometimes, speechless, in awe, of BTS and their abilities and gifts to make people dance, sing and, most of all, think. I am so so so happy that you've started with the storyline, it's vital to learn it all since it's what got most involved in them...it did to me...it pulled me right in and I became a fan. You've started with the BU (Bangtan Universe) which is the storyline BigHit have created. Each member has a story which was covered in their "journals" that were part of their album package. It's a diary each one kept of their joy when together and their hardships when they're apart. Someone must have posted the order of the videos somewhere in this comment section for you. There are also Japanese music videos that you must watch, but do not upload to YT because its Japan and you get immediately striked. We don't want that because I'm going to enjoy watching someone taking it all in for the first time and trying to decipher it all and being hella confused...because i still am. PS remember there is an order to watch, and always watch until the end, and there are WINGS SHORT FILMS (7 short films, solo for each member that comes with a solo from their album.) as well as HIGHLIGHT REELS (there are 4 but the 4th reel has all the videos put together) to watch as well as a internet comic called SAVE ME that shows more hints into the story that will blow your mind if you have followed along. What are each duo's characteristics? Did you catch where JHope was? Jimin? And I Need U is all about the desperation and persistence in the face of hopelessness... The MV fits that for me. Finally i waited for u to do it 💜 just in case you don't know. There are some other MVs u need to watch for the Storyline (in this case specifically u missed out on Prologue * 2nd* and Young Forever *4th*) most main BTS MVs and solos/short trailers and the highlight reels are connected (even some of their Japanese MVs). From I Need You to Euphoria/ephiany/fake love. (I still need to place the recent MVs in the Story but it's definitely connected till Fake Love ) additional if you wanna get the whole Picture of the Storyline you can read the Webtoon called "save me" it explains almost everything and the HYYH Notes 1 this then explains then even more and notes from the mini albums as well. Everything is Published officially from Big Hit to assist the Story. It's dark but i think the fact that they as musicians combined their Music/MVs with written words, symbolism and digital art to just tell 1 Story is genius. It's so complex really 😅 a lot to read (if u read additional Damian, Omelas and Jungs Map of the soul to get all the side references) I know a lot of Info's😅 but i think it's worth it to get the whole picture👍 and i love me some good SF story haha

That was purely the way that I understood the video, and I could be wrong about their intent for the message; but this is why BTS appeals to so many. Their songs can touch and move people in different ways, and be able to lift people out of their internal or external darkness.

my take on INU that i remember went around alot from fellow ARMYS on tumblr was that they all died in some way. yoongi set himself on fire, jimin drowned himself, tae killed that man so he ended up jumping off a cliff, hobi took pills and OD’ed, namjoon blew up at the gas station, jungkook got jumped and hit by a car while jin is suffocating himself bc i remember ppl saying that particular flower emits some type of gas that can poison you. either way its a painful gorgeous video that i cant watch often bc i always cry. sincerely, an OG 2014 army 💜💜💜

There's a pattern of the story line that runs through almost in all MV of BTS, Prologue, highlight reels and Concert VCRs . You started in I need u is the start then the next one is BTS on Stage Prologue. You can see there why Taehyung is the water. Then it will be followed by Run.

Jin is giving those expressions because he keeps trying to fix everything that has happened in the past by going back in time and yet somehow things still end up the same way. People still die. the house of cards falling signifies that his effort in this timeline hasnt succeeded. Someone was still lost. That will give you momentary relief from the curiosity but find out more yourself. Its fun to see you say "Now I wanna know things" :D :D

Most of the time in the storyline, the lyric 'girl' really refers to all of them. 'I need you girl' in reality is them saying how much they all need each other.

You're absolutely correct about how the video for this song has no apparent connect with the song lyrics. They do that sometimes and we don't know why either. The video alludes to the overarching storyline in their music video which connects with their book, webtoon, "notes," fake legend, fake flower shop, fake blog, and more. At first glance, their story won't make sense because it is told out of sequence. It's a puzzle that we still don't have all the pieces to yet. I like to consider BTS as artists who uses mixed media to tell their story and share their message. They sometimes have direct messages and sometimes their content is meant to evoke critical thinking and their listeners/viewers to draw their own conclusions and actions. They were meant be a hiphop boyband at 2013 but it didn't really work since they were from a small company. Then they switched to storytelling, and one music video (this one ) accidentally started a whole theory of some elaborated ARG (as in 7 members were troubled out-of-home teenagers with domestic violence or drug problems or suicidal attempt, etc ), and it took off hard, and that created most of the international fans for them, and the company went with it for a while. With the wave of trend following, they made it, big time. I love it. [The early theory was that everyone was died in 'I need you', trouble teenagers who needed love but all killed themselves in different ways, all 6 of them expected Jin who did tried to killed himself but didnt success and from the MV Run and all the short films and all the MVs after, he was the one doing the memory shots.]

It has a connection, "I need u girl" doesn't mean literally a girl, a connotation meaning , girl it could means a friend, a mother, someone that we could lean on, someone that will lead us to the right path.. Their music videos shouldn't literally interpreted, we could understand it more if we start to watch the music videos chronologically. For me the MV's interprets the lyrics of the song as a whole, on what the song says, its like a story..Their songs and MV's are interconnected.. it just takes time to fully got it.

Every MV in the BU are intertwined! Like the scene in the run MV when one of the boys purposely dunk Jimin's head in the water and how it mirrors the scene from I Need U when Jimin tries to drown himself. For me, the video with the lyrics of the song is consistent, because the phrase I need you is not said to the girl in particular, but I need you. It is dedicated to everyone, mother to father, brother to friendship, if you miss one of these things, you will feel the meaning of the song and the video.

The story "I need u" has alot of ups and downs for each members like V-taehyung sees that his sister is being beating by their father so he accidentally killed their father. Suga-suga try to burn his self at the hotel because his mother died in their burning house. Jhope-hes experiencing some mental condition and he's thinking he's sick that's why he's taking pills and he's fainted everywhere. Jimin-hes parents lock him up in an hospital because he's sick. Jungkook-he is close to suga and he got beat up by men and got on accident. Jin-jin is trying to get them back where they used to be, Everytime he failed to rescue one member he will wake up in the same day. Rm- used to live in the container where V always to hangout

It is difficult sometimes to understand it but recall the painting of Suga that got burned while Jungkook was looking at it. Have you ever had a friendship that ended because you grew up and apart maybe a friend that went a different way and started hurting themselves and as much as you reached out they just kept taking wrong turns. Life is hard, adulting is hard the life these guys are representing are the trials that happen to people as they make the choices that take them from children to adults and how they affect friendships. So like they were saying "girl" can mean a support system that is breaking like a girlfriend, friend, parent, or aunt or uncle, someone that makes you make choices that you don't want to make.

From what I've heard, the lyrics was supposed to be 'I need you *Friend'* but it did sounds right in both English and Korean. So for musical purposes they chose 'girl'. The message of the lyrics still apply just remember that it's not really romantic in theme.

We’ve been solving all these theories for years when we first jump in BTS HOLES.... and for you to go back there, need to watch in orders. Early BTS talk about Dreams and Hopes for young generation, Then Skool luv affair Era they started to talk about love , HYYH Era they expressed about Youth, Mentality of adulthood, Friendship thru their Music and Theories that they created such Save Me webtoon, After they grow up and they start the Love Yourself Era where ..... All of them are connected in one big stories.

Yeah I guess the reason why the music is separated from the video is that they want to make the song universal as to make new fans equally attracted to the song itself. But watching music videos means that you wanna dive into it deeper, so they can have more creative space to make a connection so that you may listen to a bundle of songs at a time or mesmerized into this parallel universe of BTS.
