At the end of this lecture, Prof. Ole provided an example of a mathematical model of an abstract physical system. I think his description correspond to saying that the output y is equal to the convolution of the impulse response k with the input x. In engineering, we usually use the Laplace transform, Fourier transform or Z transform to turn this convolution into multiplication on the frequency domain. I hope this can provide some context for the example mentioned.
