Dual Boot Linux Mint 19.3 With Windows 10 (Legacy Mode)

In this video I will be demonstrating a dual boot with Linux Mint 19.3 and Windows 10 in legacy mode, a work colleague has two or three computers running Linux Mint, now that his daughter is in Secondary School she will be needing Windows 10 to accommodate some applications to be used for school. I thought it would be a good idea to document this install as I have a small HP Elite Book that's been dual booting Peppermint Linux and Windows 10 for the longest time without issues, Windows 10 has updated from 1709, 1803,1809 then to 1909 it may have skipped a version or two in between as it was long periods between updates, I have also reinstalled peppermint from 8,9 and then 10 they are both still happily dual booting.

The quality of audio is not my usual standard however it's the best I could get it, the Windows 10 video was a bit low quality, I may have missed some setting in OBS, what is important however is the quality of the information which is the main purpose of the video.

Happy to report it worked beautifully. I spent a lot of time trying to find a comprehensible Legacy install. You nailed it. I am curious, though, any thoughts about why you cannot assign the boot partition without the tag?

It will not be recognised when booting if the boot flag is not assigned, it will boot into Windows 10 only.

Hey! Bit late I know but great video. I keep getting the error about “No EFI partitions we’re found, continue at your own risk” even though I’m in a legacy system, was wondering if it’s safe to just ignore those and continue? Is there any way to make sure my USB boots in legacy mode. Anyways, great content and love the work.

G'day mate, It sounds like your bios maybe set for uefi mode and not legacy, it maybe worth checking that, otherwise try boot options, if you can see 2 entries for your usb, one will be for efi the other would be legacy. The following link you can find boot options for your computer brand www.wikigain.com/boot-menu-option-keys-for-all-laptops-desktops/ I think it maybe worthwhile changing the bios from uefi to legacy and that error should go away, unless you need to re-install but I wouldn't think so, but you never know with computers Lol

@@pctlc Yeah I suspected that and checked in 3 separate ways it all indicated my system boots in legacy, so I ignored the warning and the whole thing works perfectly fine except that the Grub menu doesn't appear automatically, it appears when I manually select to boot from my second drive which I could probably set up to boot from on default anyway. Thanks Mate, I've used your video to Dual Boot Mint 20 & CloudReady 85.4.0 (Home Build) in legacy mode on a T61p with 2GB of ram and it works great for Web Browsing and IPTV. I had to use legacy boot flag though, regular boot flag would not work for me.

well if you check the flag menu from this picture: www.linux.org/attachments/gparted-flags-jpg.2533/ I had to also select the legacy_boot flag otherwise my grub selection menu to choose between mint or coudready would not show at boot. So actually in the mint ext4 partition i have the following flags: boot legacy_boot and esp

Why do you need the 8gb Linux swap if the boot flag is in your Linux 192gb paritition?

The Linux swap is the same as a Windows page file, it's there to accommodate full memory use, it has nothing to do with booting. :)

Hi Nhut, it seems that sometimes this method may not work all the time, if you want to try another install, select sda on the (device for boot loader installation) selection, it should work for sure.

@@pctlc thank you for replied. Because I install linux and window on two SSD. Boot option only show 1 partition of SSD1 and 1 partition of HDD. But when I swap SSD2 and HDD then it's work

Hi I got new hp laptop and linux mint cannot see windows partitions, only the flash drive itself. Gparted does not see windows either. Any ideas?

You need to shrink the disk in Windows first, not sure if that was shown in this video?

@@pctlc I did that. I gave up cause its an RST issue with the drive. BIOS says its ACHI but the symptom of linux not seeing the drives requires a safemode/reboot/install/reboot/back-to-safemode/reboot which in some situations screws up the windows. I have decided to use MS WSL and run like a VM.

Hi Michael, Windows was already installed, I was in legacy mode and it automatically picked up the windows boot, with Windows 10, UEFI mode and gpt partition table including secure boot and fast boot, all that can be very complicated for dual booting if not done correctly. :) Thanks for watching!!

I have already 3 partitions for windows. Then how can I allocate swap area as a partition??

No need to be concerned with the Windows partitions they remain the same, you need to shrink the volume in Windows then create your partitions once you boot into Linux Mint or a standard install (Erase Disk) I'm sure will create a swap partition by default. Check this link regarding how to shrink the volume in Windows 10 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/roOqZ36gaLqigJo it doesn't matter what distro I'm dual booting with in the video, creating the free space is what's important. The following link will show you how to use gparted with Windows partitions present - kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGnEZYqsjcmga5o I also show how to shrink volume in Windows 10, I don't complete the shrink which is hit the shrink button. @@nav3334 If your computer is set to legacy mode then Linux Mint will boot automatically into legacy mode from the usb, it should automatically detect which mode you're running in.
