The relays are actually wired NC not NO. They open momentarily once one side hits the switch, the waits for the other side. This all happens very fast.

This is a great idea. I have actually come up with an idea something similar to this, but instead of using PLC, I'm using an AND gate. Already drew it in simulation and works good.

Once both switches are hit, both motors are powered back on with probably a delay of less than half a second. Or depends on how fast the relay can switch is the actual delay.

The Mach3 or 4 should frame the slave shafts using separate limit switches, but I use the mach3 and it's not doing this and for me to work I do it with a mechanical end at the other end, but it's not ideal, what you did is good, but expensive, it would be enough to use a few more relays instead of a PLC which is expensive and not everyone programs, So using more relays to close the contact when the shaft is on top of the end of stroke would be more feasible, but congratulations on the work and the solution

I don't think you can get this to work with just relays. I am going to come out with a product that is much cheaper than the PLC, but it will be a while before it is released. When I do come out with it, I will make a video to show it to people, and it will be for sale on my Etsy site.

Hi Jered, your cnc knowledge base is remarkable! I hope you don’t mind a troubleshooting question..😅 x-axis only moves one direction, software shows the axis moving both directions as expected. Hardware, replaced the step motor with known good, didn’t resolve. The hooked up my old controller board same issue. 😩 What else could it be ..?

If you switch the Y with the X, does the problem transfer to the Y? Also, what software are you using to interface the controller? Mach4?

can this squaring use arduino, not hobby user can buy owerprice expensive PLC, how this working, i have dual Y axis and need squaring system, ewery time zeroing axis this square both Y motor, but how if YL or YR lose some step, this happen sometime my machine. i worry lose step and not come good round etc parts. how wiring this square /sensor system ? sensor/relay/PLC or arduino to motor system.

You can use a micro controller of your choice to do the auto squaring. You just need to understand how to program it. As for the wiring, I am not really setup to show all that. If I draw a schematic, it would be for the plc setup I have.

Sir, I can see that you are an expert in Such Tech..! Can you help me with some of my doubts? 1) Can We do the same homing sequence you demonstrated here using Brains on Mach3? Can you explain? 2)After watching so many tutorials on YT, I am worried about the reliability and consistency of Mach3 as it is controlled by 5V signals, and hence there is a huge chance of EMI/RF interferance..! This may ruin the entire project by contaminating axis movements..! I am not confident to do proceed as this is the case, I wont be able to do longer projects with ease..! Is mach3 Reliable for longer projects ? Especially it is directly running from PC? I am using RNR Motion card which is a USB Based connection which worries me further I also have a parallel port card both of these are cheap.. other cnc controllers are expensive and inaccessible Can you demystify?
@JeredAdams

Mach3 is less reliable than Mach4, that being said, Mach3 will still work and I did start out with Mach3 and used it for years. I didn't add the auto squaring until after I upgraded to Mach4, but it will work with Mach3 as well. If you are able to, I recommend spending the money and upgrading to Mach4 and by an ethernet controller of some sort. I alway recommend CS Labs 4 axis controller. It is a higher end consumer grade controller designed to work with Mach4. As for building the unit to control the auto squaring, it would be the same for either Mach3 or 4. You need to make sure all the grounds of the 2 systems (cnc controller and auto squaring) are tied together. I use a PLC to do this currently. However, I have found that it is much cheaper to use an ESP32 (microprocessor) to accomplish the same as the PLC. Basically, you don't need Mach4 to do the auto squaring, and you might be able to configure Mach to do the auto squaring for you by using the 4th axis for the second Y axis. This is not an easy question to answer though a text, but yes, Mach3 will be enough to get any job done that you need.

Oh man this would be so much more elegant if it could just be done in the firmware like how 3d printers level the daul Z axis using a probe. CNC firmware is still in the dark ages it seems. Having the firmware just read the endstops and adjust the motors would get rid of so much of that hardware.
