Hoisting a 100-metre-high, 9,500-tonne skybridge between two skyscrapers and over a live roadway is what you call an incredible feat of engineering. This is how it was done. Here's why the One Za'abeel team uses HoloBuilder - bit.ly/2ObjRj4

Jeddah: "We will top it! This is a building taller than yours!" Dubai: "We will take the record back to Dubai! This is a tower taller than yours!" Jeddah: "Oh damn, this is expensive. We're out." Dubai: "Now there's only us left in the race! We are guaranteed to win! ... wait, we already have the winning tower, and this IS damn expensive! Y'know what, Burj Khalifa is tall enough as it is." Result: Two half-built towers, billions spent, status quo unchanged.

Me not knowing what a cantilever is: Ah yes, impressive
@peach495
@peach495 3 жыл бұрын
@Kwistenbiebel200 Wrong. It's cantilevered from Building A out. A cantilever doesn't reference how it's attached. The cantilever references the structure jutting out from a structure without support on the end of the portion jutting out. This is a cantilever structure.

@Kwistenbiebel200 Thank you! Thats what I thought at first after having seen the video. The title got me thinking that this was going to be the longest cantilever but it was disappointing when a short span of the other end was the only cantilever. The rest is just simply supported. This is pretty much making it an illusion of a long cantilever.

At sunset it really looks like a scene from *Blade Runner* 😳 Impressive indeed...but after a very short period the awe fades really quickly and you realize it's a soulless city, *ZERO* culture, zero tradition. I mean 90% of the people you'll see around are SE Asian workers from Bangladesh, Philippines and so on. You can't walk outside during the day for like 9 months / year because of the high temperatures so you're just jumping from the office, to the mall, to the hotel and gym. That's about it.

The CCTV Building has a 75m cantilever according to Google. I saw one source that said this is 66m. The ratio of the cantilever is 5.5 diamonds long to 1.5 diamonds high. It looks to be around 5 stories high. 66m would make sense if the typical floor to floor height was 3.6m, a reasonable figure. Even if this was 4m the cantilever would be 73.3m, less than the CCTV Building. I'm dubious, but we'll see the official figure when the tower is opened I suppose.

Nah not the longest cantilever, they just deform the concepts to fit their marketing! For me a cantilever is something that is hold from 1 point only.. Like a tree branch. This building is a sky bridges with a small "excess" to it. If you remove the bit that they welded, it's a SKY BRIDGE...that's like a tree branch beings fix on the start and End with a bit that go pass it. Only the welded bit is cantilever, so definitely not the longest! Check out Busan cinema roof for a proper cantilever.

@@blitzkrieg634 The city is planned around cars- highways are EVERYWHERE... separating large swaths of the city and requiring a car to get basically anywhere. Also, the large buildings and lack of midsize buildings (3-4 stories) make the city feel very unusual for pedestrians. Nothing is “human-scale” and there is basically no sense of space. Basically every building is trying to be the newest coolest design- great cities have a few iconic buildings with many humble buildings. Think of Paris - the large majority of the buildings all are built in the Parisian style with a few iconic buildings: The Eiffel Tower, Centre Pompidou, The Louvre, etc.

@deanwhite5292
@deanwhite5292 3 жыл бұрын
@@blitzkrieg634 Yes actually, that’s exactly what I’m saying. More specifically: I'm telling you its terrible because cities should be built for people, not for cars. Cars are not inherently terrible but when the only option to get around a city is to drive, that is poor design. For example: In Dubai, the Burk Khalifa is 2/3 of a mile from Coca Cola Arena. The walk is 1.1 miles (that takes 22 minutes) and requires you to cross over 16 lanes of highway. There are basically no shops, parks, or anything on that walk. Because of this, you would probably never walk there, even though it is a very easy walk. Instead, you drive. In Paris, The Arc de Triumph is 1 mile from the Eiffel Tower. The walk is 1.4 miles (roughly 29 minutes) and does not require you to cross over any highway. Instead, you walk past hundreds, maybe thousands of shops and boutiques, a dozen parks, etc. Allowing you to experience the city, the people, the culture, etc. There are hundreds of opportunities to meet new people, try new foods, etc. All on a 1.4 mile walk. The example in Paris is actually a longer walk but I guarantee it would be a much more enjoyable and unforgettable experience. You would probably do it again, without needing to rely on your car. I'm from America and we are so conditioned that cars are essential - because they are.. but only because of the way we have planned our cities. It is a shame that Dubai chose to plan cities like post-WW2 America. They had a great opportunity to create a great city but they decided instead to build massive towers of glass that have no connection to the street or city in which they sit.. Ask yourself, which walk would you rather do everyday?
