The 3 and 4 Year old Registered Irish Draught Mare Class is always a great class these are the future of the Irish Draught breed none more so than this year as the winner went on to become champion RID mare at the Dublin Horse Show.
Interestingly none of the mares in the class had a foal at foot. Maybe this has something to do with the state of the market at the moment, but if Irish draught are down in price you normally would expect more half bred or sport horse foals. Whatever the reason it was disappointing to see no foals.
The line up in the class is very impressive and obviously breeding standards in the breed are rising. Performance seems to be more important now in the Irish draught breed and these mares would look well in ridden show classes as well. Movement seems to be improving in the breed and good movement is important if you hope to breed a performance horse.
