Nice deck, I had a GX-630D back in the early 1980s, traded it in on a 1/2 track Revox A77 a few years later, as I recall. Wish I still had it now, of course.

+Michael Ashworth The principles of Magnetic recording are discovered at the end of the nineteenth century. Tape recorders are in use since the twenties of the past century. The sound quality however was not very good. The soundquality improved important in during the last years of the thirties because of a wrong designed record amplifier. The success however came during the fifties and sixties. During the Apollo mission there were Tape decks with very good soundquality.

beautifull system i have two akai reel decks but older than that , also have a pioneer that as a similar vu meters but in the 80´s had problems also a revox from 78 and 12 others i bought recentelly for 100€ ,most of them akai and some work perfect

Люблю 630-ю модель у АКАЙ. В 1995 году ее с батей купили за 670 баксов. До сих по работает, правда хороших катушек зарубежных фирм осталось мало (шт.20) в основном немецкой фирмы ORWO. А наши отечественные ленты на нем скрипели так, что проще было винил со скрипучей пластинкой послушать. Только ленты фирмы Славич еще более менее поддавались бесшумной раскрутки - без скрипа и рассыпания самой ленты. Не слушал сей агрегат уже как лет 8. Выкидывать жалко, но хорошую цену за него почему-то не предлагают. Говорят - либо ты это барахло на помойку бесплатно выбросишь, все равно за такую цену (которую мы тебе предлагаем) у тебя его никто не купит. Но, извините, по цене китайского смартфона FLY и я даром этот аппарат продавать не буду. Я на нем 15 лет всю классику зарубежной поп и рок музыки прослушал - от Криса Де Бурга до Криса Ри. В 90-е брал в прокат сд-диски и пластинки и переписывал на них любимые альбомы. Да и в основном это была лента фирмы Славич, поскольку в 90-е года у нас в Казахстане было сложно достать самые титулованные ленты зарубежных производителей. Мне повезло только с немецким ORWO и 4-мя японскими летами фирмы JVS. Ленту ORWO у нас можно было купить в любой комиссионке, она стоила в 2,5 раза дороже обычной СЛАВИЧевской ленты. Какое же это было прекрасное время, а сейчас только одни спекулянты предлагают выкупить такую технику, чтобы потом ее торгануть в три раза дороже... ну или на запчасти!

Я также очень люблю бобинники,но реальность такова,что их время попросту прошло-А это моя юнность-начало 80-х годов прошлого столетия.Ведь редкие люди сейчас слушают патефоны,не правда ли?Сейчас портативный цифровой плеер уровня HI-FI выдает качество звука выше,чем этот Акаи.Ленты все стареют и требуют ухода.Короче сейчас выигрывает здоровый прагматизм.Эта техника осталась у коллекционеров и ностальгирующих по старым временам.

AKAI is quality i still use my GXC-46 Stereo Cassette Recorder from the seventies, my AJ-520 FL Stereo Portable Radio GXC Cassette player from the eighties. And the Double Stereo Automatic Reverse GX-W45 cassettedeck from the nineties. They are all excellent & indestructible so i know what kind of quality your AKAI GX-6300 is !!!

If the deck does not have a belt, how can we explain that when the playback is running the tape hangs a bit. First I thought the belt was loose but then I had learnt the deck had not belt... Weird. Why does the tape hang occasionally? Anyone?

Left and right reel motor get different voltages, depending on the mode used (FF, REW, PB,pause) regulated by a circuitry board and motor capacitors (left and right), resulting in differences in tapetension. That, and the fact both tape tensioners are "spring" and weight balance loaded (which are adjustable on the inside). When a 7"tape is used, a different setting has to be applied by a switch on the front which results in different tapetension (voltage to motors therefore are differently applied when using those size reels)

It's direct drive by the way indeed. Left and right reel plus capstan motors are direct drive motors. Reels: 2x Eddy Current, Capstan: 2 speed AC servo controlled outer rotor

I'm pretty sure there is a difference between a setup staged for video and a regular usage. You are correct, tape does not like huge speakers around. But for the 10 min video session it was ok.

I like akai, toooo. AA-6300 receiver, three x-iv portable, Roberts 770 & 771x( m-7/8 & m9) and the gx600db as a everyday player. People forget to mention the GX heads

I've heard the crystal heads can destroy old tapes? Is that true?

I have no any issues with my old tapes. There are low quality tapes that will cause you problems. For example some AMPEX tapes are known to be "shredding" or "sticky" tapes, avoid using Ampex 406/407/456 & 457 tapes, Realistic/Radio Shack Concert Tape has drop out issues and so on...

Some of my tapes are low quality, some are better but I only need to digitize them. And I think it's worth the gamble because I'm really into buying a GX-470, they seem quite nice :)

This one is gorgeous! I know your demo is a few years old now, but I just bought a GX-630D in excellent condition. I have a question, if you don't mind. I don't have any reels to test on it yet, but when I power up, there is no response from the motors or switches. Is this normal? Does it not respond until a tape is threaded through? Thanks!

The NAB adapters lock system is not accurate enough for GX 630D. The original AKAI NAB's has a second lock system that is necessary for this type of machine to run smoothly and silently.

It's like the Pioneer 1020L (circa, 1972), this Akai has a bit more features.

In what way does this have more features? I have this, deck and the Pioneer RT-1020L in the past. The Pioneer had 4 track/4 channel playback and separate record bias and equalization switches. This Akai is only 4 track/2channel playback and a 2 position bias switch.
