For me it's 50/50 regarding DuckDuckGo's efficiency. It works very well when I'm searching in English but when I try to search in my native language, it sometimes shows results for polish, czech speakers. Also, when I'm researching for university papers, Google shows more useful sites. Works quite well for searching specific websites, products (in English), answers for questions.

@@beverywhereyouare :) It will be weird to describe what's weird in a public forum. Though, I think Google should be banned from allowing medical searches. Ideally there should be a separate search-base for any medical searches. With strict regulation on who/how/when/why has access to such a search database. Health is no joke but Google search has made it look like a trivial joke. It is one among several sensitive data points in a person's life. People search for health terms and issues almost casually on Google or any search engine. Such a useless disposal of Information on such sensitive topics to anyone and everyone creating hysteria and paranoia works really well for people who want to misuse the guileness in normal people. I use DuckDuckGo (DDG) but I still found that I was being "followed" by adverts. Although I have no "proof" as such, I did notice that this was not happening when I was using Firefox with DDG but if I was using Chrome with DDG it was definitely happening to some degree or other. So why would this be? I have a sneaky suspicion that even if you are using DDG and you are using Chrome then the Chrome browser is reporting back to Google on your search keywords even though you are not using the Google search engine . That is the only explanation that really makes sense. To me anyway... So I uninstalled Chrome. I also think that there is probably something similar going on between WhatsApp and Facebook (Facebook is the parent company). As far as "privacy" is concerned, I think that it is a myth - for at least the last 25 years our data and information has been "farmed" by tech companies and is so embedded in modern society that the practice will never be stopped. Thanks for the video.

I use The New Edge based on Chromium. Love it, snappier than Chrome. When I use DuckDuckGo on it I get no trailing ads. With Chrome especially if synced to google account, I get ads on all my devices. If your logged off your Google account and use DuckDuckGo there should be no traces. It could be possible that being synced to google account they could be tracking your typing. As well on Android if you use GBoard it tracks your typing and next thing you know ads. I use it, but disabled sync to google for typing.

By default, Chrome sends everything you ever type into the address bar to Google for processing. It's part of their URL correction, pre-fetching, and prediction stuff. As for Facebook and Whatsapp, they can't follow your messages, since those are end-to-end encrypted. But everything that's not a message? Yeah, Facebook probably has a copy of that.
@Sonu-tz2js4 жыл бұрын
@@olbaze So why do we get reports like WhatsApp of some journalists have been hacked. How do they see the messages when these apps or accounts get hacked? Would not encryption work when data is in transit, how can anyone access someone else's WhatsApp chats in some other way?

When I first tried DDG, maybe 5 years ago, its search results were quite poor compared to Google Search in all respects (other than not spying on you), so I stuck with Google. I gave DDG another shot about 3 years ago and it had vastly improved, so I stuck with it, using Google Search only if I was unable to find what I was looking for with DDG. The frequency of having to resort to Google Search has diminished with time, to the point that it has probably been a year or more since I have done so for basic Search. Today I regard DDG equal to Google for searching general terms, which is 95% of my use. DDG search remains noticeably behind when it comes to searching for news, videos, and maps. As for Google, in addition to spying on their users, in recent years they have been proven to be manipulating/censoring search in favor of the leftwing political biases of company employees or of kowtowing to the whims of various autocratic regimes around the world that they want to keep happy because it's good for business. Consequently, Google Search has become increasingly unreliable if you care about ideals such as freedom of speech and other basic human rights. For me, I will now only resort to Google Search as a desperate last resort if DDG, Brave Search, or other alternatives fail.
@olbaze4 жыл бұрын
Longtime user of DDG here. First off, a small critique of the video: at 6:00, when you were doing the search, the reason DDG didn't give you the regional results is because you did not have your location turned on. There's a toggle for that under the search bar, it says "Canada" for you. Note that turning on this will change how some other features of DDG work. Second, as a longtime user, I love the !bang system of DDG. You can just do a search with a specific !bang keyword, such as !youtube (or !yt for short), and it'll actually do the search in KZbin. There are tons of these, and it makes it very easy to go from your new tab page, to the search results in a given page. I do this with wikipedia (!wiki), youtube (!yt), reddit (!reddit), amazon (!amazon), TVTropes (!tvt), and Google Search (!g), among other more niche websites. If you have your location turned on, the results will change: If you do a wikipedia search, it'll give you the page in the language for your location. Third, DuckDuckGo doesn't tailor the results to you personally. This makes the search results fairer, and far more replicable in the distant future. Lastly, DuckDuckGo offers a fair bit of customization. You can change the colour scheme, customize the fonts, center the text, choose which units to use (metric vs imperial), choose which map service to use (Google Maps, Bing Maps, HERE Maps, etc), and a lot of other things.

What would be the point of using DuckDuckGo v Google for privacy reasons if you're doing it through Google Chrome? Google search is collecting every scrap of data on you that it can but Google Chrome isn't? If advertising is an issue for you just use an AdBlock addon, been using Firefox's for near 15 years and only see embedded adverts which i don't mind on the type of sites that use them. DuckDuckGo serves a good 80%+ of my searches, the map obviously isn't quite so good.

It doesn't matter if you're using Duckduckgo if you are using Chrome. Chrome, being a Google product, could still track you (e.g., keystrokes). If you want to protect your privacy from Google, use Safari or Firefox (FF is my personal choice) and use Duckduckgo on them. Also, the top results in Google SERP were ads. Not the best comparison when doing a side by side with DDG. I use a "Google unf#@$ed" extension on FF to see "real" search results - not those tainted by my history on Google. The results are pretty similar on DDG. Without such extension, Google will feed you biased results similar to social media that feed you more of what you like so in the end you really see more of what already fit your bias. Not the best way to research if that is your goal.
