Duckweed and Watermeal Identification

We where called out to a small pond that was 100% covered with watermeal (Wolfia sp.) and duckweed (Lemna sp.). In our initial conversation with the customers, they thought the problem was an algae, until we asked "when you stick your hand in the water, does it come up with a bunch little gritty specs on it?" The answer was yes, these gritty specs are a sign of watermeal or duckweed. We offer many solutions to control watermeal and duckweed.

Our biggest gripe with it is the ducks avoid the pond through the summer months when its thickest on the pond, so they come up to the chicken pen and dirty up the chickens water!!!!!!!

So how do you get rid of this stuff??? My parents pond has had this since they bought the place and we want it gone! It blocks off the sun light so no other water plants grow, no other water plants grow so very low oxygen so our pond can't support fish.... Plus our ducks avoid swimming most of the summer because of this stuff....

Stephen Limson Hey Stephen! there are few herbicides that work well. What I have seen is a few treatments with an herbicide will get the problem under control. Once the problem is under control, stocking Tilapia (not recommended in every climate) will help maintain control. Tilapia absolutely love Duckweed! What a win-win, you get fat happy Tilapia off of Duckweed. Fat happy Tilapia spawn more high quality forage for your Bass! What have y'all done to control your Duckweed?

TEXASPONDMANAGEMENT We've tried draining the pond, by breaking a man made dam after a heavy rain to let the run off carry the duckweed away (unknowningly "flushing" 100+ catfish the previous owner had stocked :-( ) we've tried stocking with carp (several times) we thought we had it figured out when we got ducks, they love the stuff! But they don't eat enough/fast enough to have an impact and when it gets thick mid summer they avoid it.

TEXASPONDMANAGEMENT and also let me ask, what should we feed tilapia in the winter months? Is there a commercial fish feed we can pick up at the feed store?

I think this is fungus
