They are! Discovery Channel documentaries give very brief overviews with very little details. The Duct Keel might just get mentioned before they jump to another section or the drama of "are we going to make this delivery on time". In general I'd say the Discovery Channel aims to entertain rather than inform and educate.

Its not even a joke. These days channels like National/Discovery are nothing but bull****. They cant make a program without adding to EVERY, SINGLE, scenario; he could die. It used to be informative and fun when I watched them 20years ago. Anyways, keep up the videos Jeff. These people are not making shit up, your videos are top notch and SO much fun to watch! Hello jeffhk, thank you for showing us the duct keel. I did not know that there was a pipeline that runs the entire keel of the ship, I see that it is very long and I observe that the personal safety at the time of entering these spaces is very rigorous on your part because you can be hurt by being a narrow place. I have a suggestion, for you could you please make a video about the procedure of turning on the main engine? Please help us a lot here at the Maritime University of the Caribbean.

Very cool. Whenever I see enclosed spaces in a ship, I instantly start worrying about the breathability of air in the compartment. How do they check it for the duct keel? It'd obviously be catastrophic if someone passed out halfway down that ladder...

Since the entrance is at the Engine Room, water can collect from the difference in temperature and condensation.

What is the ventilation set up for the duct keel? Do you do atmospheric testing prior to or during entry?

I noticed when you got to the other end of the duct keel there was an additional ladder going up. Daft question, but does that lead up onto the bow of the ship? Near the anchors or something?

Dippers85 that ladder would probably lead up to an area called the Bosun's store. This is an area on the same level as the main deck but situated right at the bow, directly under the forward mooring station (usually on big ships the bow itself is higher than the main deck, meaning there is a room underneath it which is used for storage; this is called the Bosun's store). Hope that helped!

Deck officers to physically check, we notify the engineers when we are going down so that they wont start any jobs that might endanger us.

The keel is the lowest point so if you take only a small volume of water it will be there. The bilge pump has some dead volume that will never be rejected.
