“That last day on that film, when I’m looking into the camera and talking to the audience, I’d done that scene eight [or] nine times and the brothers were [right there next to the camera],” the actor said. “I’d done the scene and I’d felt like I had nailed it more than once. And I just looked at them and said, ‘Hey, you guys gotta tell me what the f-k you want. And they said, ‘No, we got it on the third or fourth take, we just like seeing you do it.’” Amazing

The fellow in the background bowling alone is none other than the famed professional bowler, Barry Asher. He was technical adviser for the movie, and actually struck on every ball he rolled in the movie. It is said he would strike every time the director called for it. Gotta think of Joe DiMaggio hitting a home run forty years after retirement on demand. Mr. Asher now gives lessons in Southern California.

In fact, he was so good, and the director was so impressed with his ability that the director would actually request him to leave a pocket 8-pin or various other leaves. Yes, Barry Asher is THAT good... even 40 years after retirement.

I had the fortunate experience of having breakfast with Sam Elliot a few years ago at a mutual friends house. He was one of the coolest and most humble person I ever met. He would show up with his lawn mower and cut my friends grass for him. His name was Raymond Garcia RIP, an old man who lived in Lincoln Heights in Los Angeles, which is pretty rough neighborhood. It was a real trip to see a well known movie star doing yard work for an old friend (and in a ghetto neighborhood for that matter). The day I met him, he showed up with a truck full of firewood. The whole family loved this guy and he seemed to love them to.

This movie is the one thing I had in common with my father. Growing up in his restaurant's kitchens as a child, I would watch him watch this movie on his ancient laptop over and over as he worked day in, day out. My parents split at my birth and things were rocky to say the least between them. I found comfort being with them at work, at times feeling like I had to choose between them. Watching this scene often makes me think of him and the fatherly relationship I wanted so bad growing up. I miss him and will never get that time back with him. This movie reminds me to work harder and the bits about my father I now see he tried to teach me. It reminds me of the good days with him, in all his glory even though I seem to only remember the bad ones. I watch this scene all the time to keep me in line with some semblance of myself that I know he might be proud of.

What's fascinating about the line, "the Dude abides," is that this line is a variation of the biblical line from the book Ecclesiastes: 1:4 "One generation passes away, and another generation comes, but the earth abides for ever." This suggests that Sam Elliot (the cowboy) is God, and he is all seeing, and that the Dude is the earth, for he is everywhere all the time. You may not have noticed, but the Dude is in every single scene of this movie. The Dude is even the scene where the people who want the ransom money are eating in the diner, as the Dude's van and himself are in the background in the window. This single line really just shows the genius of the Coen Brothers, and also shows how much effort and creativity went into this film.
@carminerossi69018 жыл бұрын
+LeprachaunLucky Yeah That's how I like to interpret it. For one, Elliot's body is only in two scenes and yet he seems to know everything about the dude's life. Rather than partaking in any aspect of the film, he seems to be just observing and telling the story. Also, despite all the chaos and confusion in the film (jackie treehorn trashing his place, nihilists trying to cut of his johnson, Big lebowski promising to avenge him tenfold, sellers stealing his car) the dude is totally unchanged in any facet at the end of the film. Which, in a sense, is like the earth. spot on man.

MaximisedInsight If you think of God as a completely spiritual entity, then yes, you would be correct, but this movie focuses on the Catholic adaptation of the bible. This would mean that God is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost (the Holy Trinity). Jesus, the Son, would be a sinner himself, as he is the human form of God. This shows that Sam Elliot is indeed God, but not the spiritual form, and Sam can indeed be a sinner.

The dude is in the moment. He is in the now. That is why he doesn't care about status, wealth, attachment, love, or even his own name. (That's why he speaks in third person) Harmony is listening to music, bowling, enjoying being alive, breathing. His state of "One-ness" has more fulfillment than anything he can achieve, that is enlightenment. He only has hardships due to other peoples actions and interference, and even so it's only temporary til he returns to his "State of Dude", taking it easy like you know he will.

_"Take it easy, Dude. I know that you will."_ God I love that line. Comparing Sam's bowling alley bar scene w/ Walter's cafe scene makes for an amusing contrast. If you pay attn, the way Walter double hammer-fists the bar in the cafe is hilariously (and more than a touch craftily) evocative of an alpha male silverback Gorilla's threat display, slamming both arms down against the ground or an object at the same time with an almighty thump (Walter's display is more low key, but f'n funny with the above in mind). The little tappity-tap dance he does just before he lays into Larry's nextdoor neighbour's new car with the Dude's crow bar (genius sound editing BTW), is another example of John Goodman's hilarious (yet surprisingly subtle) body English. The way he tilts his head right as he says the line _"think it's a Pomeranian"_ slays me every time without fail; somehow I failed to notice it before my 20th odd viewing :) If you've watched TBL half a dozen or more times, check out the above scenes next time you watch it; I think you'll enjoy my little observations. Aw heck... _I know that you will. ;)_

I've always thought he represents the audience… All of us… Becuase he knows Lebowski and says things that he wouldn't be able to know if he was a simple stranger… He is not a character like the others… He is basically the audience or the critics “entering" in the movie, it is like a wonderful experience. In the middle of the movie there is this sort of “break" in which the directors give us the oportunity to break the 4th wall. The only thing is that the dude doesn't know it.. For him he is just like a stranger, maybe drunk, speaking with him… This is the magic of cinema. The stranger first of all says: “how're you doing there, dude?” He asks him how he is… I mean, after all the troubles even we, the audiece, want to know how he feels… And the dude answers without being so interested, which is quite correct, as he doesn't know the stranger, and so he doesn't know us (the audience)…Then the cowboy says: “I like your style, dude" without knowing him… That means a lot. It is the audience telling the dude that WE like his style as a character of a movie… Because… Who honestly doesn't like the dude? Then the stranger says something more, something that all of us share… He says: “Do you have to use so many cuss words?” Because it is a fact, he really uses a lot of bad words.. It's his character… It is just like we saying the dude something that cannot be changed at all, becuase he is a character obviously. And then, of course, the cowboy is even the narrator, like if Joel and Ethan Coen were there talking to us about the story and the characters they've created. They are genius

It seems credit is given, and taken from him. Which in a sad way reflects much of his life. Townes was an unknown (except in country music) and poor, and he got ripped off many times. I've loved the Stones from the Sixties, so it pains me to think that they may have been involved in that BS, but the music business can be mercenary...
