They were my in-laws & I have many stories. My favorite goes like this. Flora rarely cooked, so Airto & I would go to the market, purchase dinner fixings, take them home & lay them on the kitchen counter. Airto would then begin pulling pots & pans, one at a time, & play them like a drum or tamborine. If it didn't have a good sound, it would be put away & out came another until he found the one with sound. He would use that pot or pan to cook with. It always came out delicious. You can't make this stuff up. Today they are both in Brazil.

I saw Flora and Airto several times around the Bay Area of CA many times in the mid 70's through the mid 80's. The strangest venue I saw them play was at the Saddle Rack in San Jose, (I'm guessing between and including 1983 and 84). which was a country western club, usually packed with fans of the local country bands. This was during the peak of the whole Urban Cowboy thing that was happening at the time. I remember Flora even joked at it from the stage. Certainly not the "normal" atmosphere you'd associate with them. It was a great show of course and they went over very well. I wish there was a recording of that show somewhere.

Then bought Virgin Land. 1981 met both of them at San Francisco club Tod Barkans Keystone Korner. This performance at the Masson Mountain Winery happened in 1997 or 98. Just wanted to add my thanks for uploading this musical jem. I am a lifelong Flora Purim fan but, as you can imagine living in the UK, I have had very little chance to see her and Airto live. But I did have the privilege of catching them at Ronnie Scott's club in the 80's and treasure that memory. I'm also a guitarist and for years have followed and loved all the great sophisticated fusion guys such as Carlton and Ritenour, but must confess to never having heard of Larry Nass until discovering this video. What a beautiful and fiery player, he reminds me of Carlos Rios, another great, and I am so sad to hear of Larry's untimely passing at such a young age. Larry simply burns on this video demonstrating that perfect balance of technical mastery, jazz sophistication, and fiery emotion. Can anyone tell me if he was ever featured on any albums, either solo or as a sideman? Surely he should be regarded up there with the fusion greats based on this evidence! Respect too for the band and Kei in particular, who I had the privilege of seeing with Miles back in the day. Latin music is the rhythm of life - peace all.

Thanks for posting this. I remember having it on VHS back in the '80's. If my memory serves me right it was part of a series called 'Harvest Jazz' from a jazzfest at the Paul Masson Vinyards in California. My guess is around 1982. I see the personnel is given further in the comments. If anyone has anything else from this series it would be interesting to see the Sonny Rollins segment where he tried to jump off the stage, broke his leg, and continued playing!! Happy Jazzing folks.

Very fascinating! 😍 I was brought here because the latest Jazz Dispensary series has a track by Flora Purim. I've never seen a singer use that dual microphone technique before (What the hell is she doing there? 🤔) But it actually makes a lot of sense! 😮💡 Each microphone could running through different effects processors. This would give Flora Purim amazing control over vocal effects just by movin each microphone closer and further away as she was singing. At one point it seemed like the silver microphone had a lot of reverb and echo... But the black microphone was more "clean" (meaning it had a lot less reverb and or other effects) 🤔 It would take a lot of practice to get it figured out, but her technique is pure genius! 😍👌 I'm super impressed by Flora Purim and the whole band! And I think I'm going to have to track down some of her records 🙏
