I never understood why low gravity on mars would alter the strength of materials. Why can he bend metal! Just because gravity is low doesn’t make the metal any weaker…plus in a world where everyone is very weak why have such massive chains etc! A tiny chainlink (like we would use for a necklace or bracelet) would be more than enough to act as a restraint for creatures.

It could be that the thern have made their tech amp up the strength of the projected bodies so when they appear on earth they are not crushed by the gravity after being on mars for so long. So when a human (with higher strength) projected themselves to mars, their bodies strength was similarly amplified, even more than the difference in gravity would allow, explaining why he can bend metal etc!

John Carter would have to work out like a madman to keep the physique he arrived on Mars with, even if it was just his couch potato one from Earth! As a little kid I never really understood why Superman's super-strong muscle cells would make him look buff either, rather than normal on Krypton and tending to even scrawnier on Earth.
