What's a castornoil substitute??
@saponify6677
@saponify6677 7 ай бұрын
Good day. Castor oil is the only oil that I know off that does not have a substitute or anything close to it. Castor oil is unique in the way that it's the only known oil containing Ricinoleic acid, Ricinoleic acid is kind of a team player oil, it doesn't really produce bubbles by itself but add as little as 5% to the mix and it will improve the foam of any recipe a lot. Castor oil is not compulsory in a recipe, it is not a train smash if you leave it out, it is just a lovely "support" oil to add to your soap. Blessings Ansa kzbin.info/www/bejne/h36rdo2Gfb12sJY

Hi. All soap improves if it have some time to cure, That being said, this is a hot process dual lye soap, it is safe to use immediately and due to the added Potasium Hydroxide it will never harden completely. Blessings Ansa

Hi Ansa thank you so much for sharing your lovely recipes and I recommend them to so many people. I'm about to try the shaving soap and just have two questions: 1. can I leave out the sodium lactate or is there a substitute? 2. Can I use a few less grams of Koh for a slightly harder bar? Kind regards Estelle 🤗
@saponify6677
@saponify6677 5 ай бұрын
Hi Estelle, it is all my pleasure. You can certainly leave it out all together, the sodium lactate (it's a kind of salt) it is a humectant that draws moisture to itself and salt also hardens soap. If you want to replace it you can make a saturated solution of salt water (plain table salt) and use 15ml solution per 500gram oil in your recipe. You can also use any combination of NaOH and KOH, the KOH make the soap more soluble so that it foams up faster and easier (but also results in a softer bar) 20%KOH and 80% NaOH will give you a much firmer bar but still soluble enough for a nice shaving soap, you might just have to "work" a litle bit harder on working up a nice lather. 🌿

I just found your channel and love it! Your videos have so much of the information I need to form my recipes (the science stuff). I also use tallow in my soaps and love it. I’m going to try lard as well to see if I like the addition. Thank you for the laughs and wonderful teaching.

Hello dear, I hope your days are a blessings & thank you for sharing your experience 🙏🏼✨💓 can you advice me if I recalculated the recipe & used only sodium hydroxide is it going to be good as your soap ? Because I don’t have potassium hydroxide & it’s difficult to get it where I am
@saponify6677
@saponify6677 Жыл бұрын
Hi Mashael. You can definitely recalculate with just sodium Hydroxide, your end product is just going to be harder. The Potasium Hydrocide makes the soap more soluble and softer so that you can work up a lather faster. Without it you will just need a minute more patience to produce the "fluff" 😃

Hello Ansa, Great video! I like your honesty that things can go wrong. Just ask me. I've just started making soap and have been working with oils but am more interested in tallow and have made your tallow laundry soap and love love love it. It is a simple and amazing bar of soap. I also like how quickly everthing came together as I can be a bit impatient. I live in Canada (hello from lands far away) and would like to use ingredients I can source locally rather that oils that come from the other side of the planet. Am excited to try making this tallow-based shaving soap and glad to see in the comments it can be made in a slow cooker as I don't own a microwave. Oh yeah, one more thing, just curious why you used both sodium hydroxide and potasium hydroxide? Is it possible to just use sodium hydroxide? Thanks Melanie

Hello Melanie. Welcome to the soapmaking tribe, it is truly an exciting and unpredictable journey. You are most welcome, I think if more soapmakers are honest about the things that can (and sometimes do) go wrong less new soapers will be frustrated and give up at the first mishap. I'm glad youblove the Tallow soap, it is one of my favorites as well, sometimes less is more as they say. The reason for Potasium Hydroxide in the shavingvsoap is to soften it and make it more soluble, shaving soap is high in stearic acid to create that lovely stable foam, but stearic acid is also hard and doesn't foam easily . You van make a small batch with Sodium Hydroxide only and test it, you might have to "work" the soap a bit more to get the foam going. All the best, and I would love to hear how it turns out. Blessing, Ansa

@@saponify6677 Hi again Ansa, Thank you so much for your reply and info. Yes I'm emjoying making soap and thanks to you I've found what kind I'm really interested in making. I managed to order some Pot Hyd so I'm set to try this but then found I could not find rice milk powder anywhere even on-line Ugh! I'm wondering if I can leave it out all together or if you might have an idea for a substitute. I'm putting myself under pressure to make a good batch. Thanks again! I enjoy your sense of humour : ) and your real and casual but educational videos.

@@m.e.foster98 Thank you for your kind words, I apologize for taking so long, somehow I missed your comment and only saw it yesterday. You are welcome to leave the rice powder altogether or make your own rice "milk" by soaking some rice overnight in water, bring it to a boil, strain, cool and use it as a water replacement.

I don’t own a microwave, what would be the best way to cook it.

Hi Claire. You can do it in a crock pot / slow cooker or a make shift double boiler as well. It just takes much longer, the upside with a slower process is that you have more control, and getting distracted for 30secons (like I did) doesn't make a difference.

Hi Ansa how do you melt the steric acid?
@saponify6677
@saponify6677 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Heleen, I just add all my oils in together in one container and melt it together in the microwave till it is clear, usually it is between 50°C and 60°C if there is stearic acid in the mix. I let it cool to about 45°C before adding the lye.
