I imagine this game sold so well because the pre-order bonus was the 1st ever printing of the original God cards. That's an amazing bonus, plus the 3 promos per copy, plus a reasonable game if you like the show-adapted version of YGO, for what was $30 at the time.
@HaxDotCombo2 жыл бұрын
It sold so well also because the first 3 games were so much more serviceable.

The cards in the yugi pack seem fairly meta-relevant for the time too. Anti-Spell Fragrance is questionable as it didn't become extremely prevalent for a while but in 2001 Ring was basically mandatory in every deck.

The first game got translated recently, and it's been a blast. It really makes one appreciate how much DM3 advanced the formula, but it's also fun in its own jank sort of way. Your videos also helped to show that climb up of all the mechanics. It's a cute lil series! Shame that 4 seems like a step back in some regards... About the video, I think your other retrospective vids were really good, but this one seemed a bit messy. I guess part of the reason is how little support 4 has compared to the rest, but I think the unedited live talk section is probably the biggest reason. It doesn't flow into the other videos as neatly, and some of your points get lost. Would love to see a second look at DM4 some day, maybe after you've finished going through all the games!

I would also like it to be known that the patch that was referenced in this video would have worked for all 3 versions if it was complete; it works on all 3 regardless, but the same issues persist.

The name Kaiser Umiuma comes as a joke and a parody to the word Kaiba, which can be translated as "sea horse". Umi and uma literally mean sea and horse in japanese, and they make a fun wordplay
@Evilriku132 ай бұрын
so that's why Kaiba later down got a card by that name that helps his B. Eyes W. Dragon to get summoned.

I actually think duel monsters 4 was a cool idea in concept. Fusing past the early stages of Duel monsters 3 was made mostly obsolete due to the low deck cost of beaters like Jurai Gumo, Dark Elf and the custom cards you could make with card parts. That made later duels at lower deck capacities incredibly boring essentially being the most rudimentary form of you playing caveman yugioh while hoping your opponent doest see a bunch of power spells (some of which they could have 3 ofs while you were limited to 1) and ruin you. Duel monsters 4 had a lot more variety in terms of deck types and it was even seen through the opponents you faced. Decks that come to mind are Ishizu's which focused on fusing for Mystical Sand or Stone Dragon and Mai's are really fun to play against and model your own deck around similar concepts. If theres ever a disassembly of this game (or duel monsters 3), a rom hack with increased deck capacity rewards, readjusted duel level requirements for cards and maybe increasing the level 4 cap from 1350 to 1500 would make for a really solid game. At the very least duel monsters 4 along with the other game boy titles have some of the best pixel art and music on the gameboy.

I'd love to see a DM 4.5 that brings the characters/story to the Battle City Finals, but uses this level system. I was thinking setting the cap for a level-4 monster to 1400 in a stat, and moving level-7 to cap at 2100, and maybe moving the level-9 monster cap to 3000? not sure. I think it'd also be interesting to start each game with a mix of greyed-out cards and legal ones, and then slowly or randomly unlocking them as duels are won (maybe every time you get 5 win on an opponent?) just to allow the end game to have all of the cards available without having them easily passworded at the start.

My biggest disappointment with this game in general is the fact that the god cards are post game so there is little to no incentive to obtain them, even worse is that the god card that you are allowed to use is not obtainable in your version, e.g. in kaiba version you can use obelisk but you have to obtain it from joey or yugi version. Even though I have beaten the 3 versions on OG hardware, it was a pain in the ass to obtain the god cards, the drop rate is insanely low however I got them relatively quick (Slifer I got it on first try). Adding to the grind hell, I obtained two of the god cards on Yugi version and in my opinion it's the most difficult of the 3 because you are not able to use most of the useful spells and traps. I kinda like the balancing changes they did, I see it as a little incentive to use the fusion system and tribute summon a bit more (considering that in Dark Duel Stories/ Tri-Holy Advent you are forced to spam 2K atk beaters to beat the game) but I understand your dislike about it. Also the AI's deck respect the "banlist" so you will not see 3 raigeki, 3 swords and 3 change of heart whoopin' your ass While it could seem that I don't like that much this game actually I had quite a good time figuring out a strategy to beat the boss and post game. And I have to say the beautiful soundtrack and pixel art motivated me to keep playing If I ever come back to these games it would be to speedrun them

Please tell me if all 3 versions can gain access to playing all the cards but however there are cards you cannot play in each version so how do you even play a blue eyes in a yugi deck?

You know i'm watching these in order. It's Interesting how the straight forward just play The game aspects would be champion by The dual monster expert games. But this weird gameboy duel momsters style would twist and turn into all sorts of weird stuff yet keep the same gameplay

I'm playing this series of games including reshef of destruction and sacred cards as I know originally these were separated from the expert rules games. Does each version of the the fourth game have different cards to start with to gain? Do the opponents have different cards in each game?
@ZaneJSilver2 жыл бұрын
They sure do! Each different version has a different set of cards you begin with and has a different god card you can obtain by beating the game, but as far as I am aware the opponent's have the same cards in each version.

What's with the Joey game having Winged Dragon of Ra in it? He was never associated with that card. Yugioh the Falsebound Kingdom for the Gamecube also had Joey associated with Ra. I've never understood this. He survived one duel with the monster but that was it.
@HighPriestFuneral2 жыл бұрын
I think it may have been a "meta fake out". I just did a bit of research and the games were released before Joey fought Marik in the manga. (Apparently in Volume 28, which was released in May of 2001, Great Duelist game released in December 7th, 2000. I think it may have built further anticipation for that battle and making people think that there was a possibility that Joey would fight Marik and win. Admittedly he comes the closest, outside of Yugi to do so. (Possibly in the early script, Joey was meant to get the Winged Dragon of Ra, hence why he is continually associated with it in later games.) I've noticed a bit of this with classic Yugioh, the games sort of... hinted at things. Simon's identity is basically a mystery throughout every game, but the first episode/chapter he shows up in, in the show/manga, he immediately is revealed to be an ancient Solomon Motou (Muto?)

@@HighPriestFuneral Ah interesting I read the first three volumes of the Yu-gi-oh Manga of the duelist Kingdom arc. I do say that they should updated it sometime as the dialog for the Manga was really bad. So I didn't bother continuing. I did find out thanks to Wiki that Yugi in the Manga never once used The Winged Dragon of Ra very disappointing. On a side note. I feel sorry for the 4kids dubbing company having to go though having to translate that bad writing in the Manga. Only for them to get blamed for it. I do wish these writers from Japan would focus on there writing as much as there drawing when it comes to art.

@@danielvelaswuez7197 I guess it really doesn't matter considering what HighPriestFuneral said. These folks from Japan have no skill when it comes to writing out there story's. Great idea's with a wonderful art style but poor execution and planning. No skill for art when it comes to writing only drawing it seems.

@@BurningFlamesofDivineDragon What version of the manga did you read? The original japanese version or an official translation ? Or was it a fan translated english version on the internet? I have the physical copies of the official english version and I didn't find the dialogue particularly bad, at least when compared to your usual shounen manga. Wasn't amazing and deep but also not terrible. Perfectly serviceable for what the story was about. The problem with 4kids is that they censored things and altered dialogue in the anime to make it more child friendly in their view. 4kids removed anything related to the concept of death, removed anything related to guns, they edited out "violent" scenes like fistfights, and they even altered the motivation of some of the villains because they thought they were too dark for children. This makes some scenes flat out nonsensical. A pretty iconic example of this is how, when characters in the show would point guns at each other, 4kds would edit the guns out so that in the end the characters would be just pointing their fingers at each other 👉.

Personally, I still stand by the statement: "the original game in the series is the best" Between Duel Monsters 1, Duel Monsters 2 Dark Duel Stories, Duel Monsters 3 Tri Holy God Advent, and Duel Monsters 4 Battle of Great Duelist, I believe that Duel Monsters 1 is the best game of the series, for 1 reason, no deck restriction. If there was no such thing as a deck cost, then I would say Tri-Holy God Advent (our DDS) would be the best in the series of the first 4 Duel Monsters Game, but for some reason, the only one that I keep going back to is Duel Monsters 1, in fact, it's the only one that I did a let's play of because I like the game so much. Overall, while in terms of being put together, Tri Holy God Advent is probably the best, due to the deck capacity system, I have to give Duel Monsters 1 the title of my favorite, Pre-Expert Rules (Master Rules World WIde), Yugioh game.
