Me and my Husband are doctors, my Husband used to be a paediatric trainee (specifically neonatologist) before later going to become a family medicine physician after he moved out of 9ja. BUT when I had my Baby, every medical knowledge flew out the window 🤣🤣🤣 And my Husband ANNOYED ME!! He’ll just look at our Baby and be like “it’s xyz she’ll be fine” and me I’ll be there wailing my eyes out. He was always right tho. The knowledge helps but cos she was my baby I no fit 🤣 BREASTFEEDING!! Nobody told me ohhhh!! We suffered! I had to breastfeed my Baby cos she had Cow Milk Protein Intolerance with formula. it was horrible! She was loosing weight, bringing up all the formula, had bad reflux, terrible rashes etc. she couldn’t have normal formula and I had to stop taking any dairy food. I had no help in a “strange” land plus my sick father travelled to stay with us I now had 2 Babies 😭😭 It took 3 months and giving her vegan (soy based) or hydrolysed formula plus my mum getting her visa and coming to help before breastfeeding became successful. I had midwives and lactation specialists but my pikin no latch In general sha I actually over exaggerated how hard motherhood will be cos I gathered all the horror stories but it turned out not as bad as I imagined. I actually excepted the worse. I love your podcast ☺️💜

This was very helpful information. My own hospital actually helped, during antenatal I was told that it is best to lactate before the baby comes. So from 6 months, I was taught to massage my breast in a way to establish breast milk flow early. So I was lactating colostrum a month before baby arrived. This helped alot and immediately baby arrived, the nurse encouraged me to breastfeed within 1 hour after birth and my daughter latched. I later learnt that where mothers are not producing milk before delivery, they encourage them to come to the hospital with formula when coming for delivery. My own challenge was demand anot meeting up to supply. I kept at breastfeeding majorly for financial reasons and I can't say it's the easiest. I lost a lot of weight, I went back to pre baby weight and even less under 6 months. Later, I learnt the kinds of foods to eat to help with milk supply but I can't say it is still easy Thank you for the Podcast guys 👏

I love the part were you said parenting needs more than stable environment and financial capability. Lots of people go into the institution of marriage, thinking that loving their partner is enough, no one cares to prepare for parenting. You guys are amazing! Please Keep stressing on the importance of Preparing for parenting.

I can totally relate. Exclusive isn't easy. There are nights where my sister cried from sour nipples to less rest at night. Mothers are the best.

My son is 2yrs5mnths . My first. Had him Preterm and could not produce breast milk. I had anxiety and blood pressure issues. Initially, my family bought breast pump and were milking me like a cow. I was in so much pain. Nurses said i should tell my husband to suckle on my already painful nipple... To the Glory of God, na doctor by himself prescribed NAN for us oo. Breastmilk later came after a week or two... flowing like a river. And yes i am still breastfeeding at 29months and intend to stop whenever my son is ready. The benefits of breastmilk can never be over estimated. MY SON HAS NEVER BEEN ILL.

Crazy enough I didn't learn of the dosing by weight until my daughter was 12. The pharmacist was the one who told her to get on a scale and showed that her weight didn't fall under the age limit on the prescription that's on the body of the medication. It definitely explained the falling sick even after medications have been administered.

I loved this conversation, thank you! I'm a Dietitian and like Dr Tosin said not exclusively breastfeeding your baby is like a taboo in our settings. However, baby being fed and growing is the priority especially when all that can be done as been done. Also, we need to put structures in place to make policies work. Yes, the national policy for nutrition and health and the Infant and Young Child Feeding practices advocate for exclusive BF, we definitely need lactation experts and other professionals to make this work.
