Duff, NT Greek, 3.1 Introduction to genitive and dative cases

Teach yourself New Testament Greek with the help of these instructional videos, designed to help you to work through Jeremy Duff's great book "The Elements of New Testament Greek".
This video introduces the forms of the genitive and dative cases for the masculine nouns discussed in section 3.1.
Please note: You'll need a copy of Duff's book in order to get the best out of these videos, as I won't be covering every detail that Duff mentions. I'll aim to cover specific issues which would benefit from closer attention, or which Duff doesn't mention, or which sometimes cause confusion to students.

I am pleasantly surprised that you don't follow the "conventional" form of Nom, Gen, Dat, Acc, How do you get away with that? I have been teaching myself and decided not to follow the "conventional" form because a Iong time ago when I had some Latin the ACC came after the Nom and when I taught myself Sanskrit it was the same. Its so much easier for me to learn NT Greek the same way. Thanks for these videos. I learn something new every time. God Bless you.

I'm just following Duff's order. It does seem logical though, at least for beginners, because the declension follows the order in which things are learned, and also because there's a kind of semantic logic: "The prophet spoke the word of God to the people": Nom-acc-gen-dat. And many other sentences have that kind of structure.

How would you translate 1Timothy 2：12, the word "MAN" is in the genitive case, can it mean "The man of the woman"？

γυνη is not close by to mean man of a woman. We have the Infinitive αὐθεντεῖν meaning to exercise authority preceding the genitive noun ἀνδρός so logically translated as "to have authority of a man". The sentence διδάσκειν δὲ γυναικὶ οὐκ ἐπιτρέπω And I don't entrust to a woman to teach οὐδὲ αὐθεντεῖν ἀνδρὸς neither to exercise authority over a man ἀλλʹ εἶναι ἐν ἡσυχία but to be in quietness

In modern Greek we don’t use the dative case anymore. It has no practical use. Instead we use Vocative=Κλιτική (Klitiki) which is used to call someone. “A vocative is a word or phrase used to address a reader or listener directly, usually in the form of a personal name, title, or term of endearment” Let’s take for example: ο όμορφος (omorfos)= handsome Nom: ο όμορφ-ος (The noun is the subject of a verb) Ex: Ο όμορφ-ος άνθρωπ-ος (anthropos)= The handsome man. Gen: του όμορφ-ου (The noun is in possession of an object) Ex: Το σπίτι(spiti) του όμορφ-ου ανθρώπ-ου (anthropoo)= The house of the handsome man. Accu: τον όμορφ-ο (The noun is the object of a verb or preposition) Ex: Εγώ ξέρω(ksero) αυτ-όν τ-ον όμορφ-ο άνθρωπο = I know this (the) handsome man (this is the literal translation from greek to English so you understand how it works the=τον) Vocat: - όμορφ-ε (The noun is being addressed) Ex: hey handsome, you forgot your wallet= Εϊ, όμορφ-ε, ξέχασες(ksehases) το πορτοφόλι(portofoli) σου (soo) Ο χαζός(hazos)= dumb Nom: Ο χαζ-ός άνθρωπ-ος. Gen: Το σπίτι του χαζ-ού ανθρώπ-ου. Acc: εγώ ξέρω αυτ-όν τ-ον χαζ-ό άνθρωπο. Voc: Εϊ, χαζ-έ, ξέχασες το πορτοφόλι σου. These all mean the same with the mentioned above just this time the man we are talking about isn’t handsome but dumb 😂 Hope this helps a little

I think the reason most of us are here - is not to learn greek, but to learn Biblical Greek, because we're trying to understand what the original text said. But thanks for the information. It's good to know.
