Reject log? Too many knots? All subjective opinions, all the knots and colors make the finished result so much more beautiful. It's a work of art really. Thanks for sharing!
@אוריפלסי5 жыл бұрын
I am not saying it isn't beatiful work, but the question of knots, is not entirely sublective. Especialy for a canoe that has to be sound on the water, i am sure you have hat knots with different density and non consistent fiber, that falls out. That is even if you over come the issues such as in the beginning of the video with them making working the wood difficult. I have a small acreage tree farm and know if you want to use the wood in its original form and not as firewood you try and remove branches so the don't cause big deep knots. Look how many videos now with them being filled with epoxy.
@thomasjelpel5 жыл бұрын

It is the top weight to be concerned with. Canoes love to roll over. When loading a canoe for an expedition, the most basic rule is everything heaviest,, right on the bottom center line. If anything on the top, it will be the large fluffy sleeping bag. Your inclination to reduce the gunwales to the minimum is spot on. That is seriously cool,, the Marias River. I have paddled the 80 miles down from the dam to the confluence. It is a lovely river. I have never paddled above the dam. An adventure for another day.

Cool project /Wrong tree I had clear grain Fir trees, but this unless you want a barge heavy - Use Cedar in the first place. That was a reject log !
@paulweston81845 жыл бұрын
I couldn't have said it better myself. It is just amazing how these guys were able to turn that "reject log" into a fine looking canoe under those conditions. Nice work and thanks Tom and Church. Well done capturing the scenery with some nice shots of the water and mountains in the background. Now, That's what I call a labor of love. Kudos.

Yup. Totally the wrong tree. I had a cottonwood picked out, but it was just a wee too small for the job, so we found the Douglas fir as a substitute. It isn't a traditional canoe wood, and it's very heavy, but she sure turned out beautiful and floats great! Here is Part 2: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hF6tmIqKebqnl5I

Good job on a very inspiring video. I've wanted to do just the same with this hundred year old Western Red Cedar on our property, it's really BIG. I enjoyed the whole video. Thank you.

Doug fur is outrageously heavy wood. I can only imagine the popped blood vessels y’all got moving that thing. But it looks amazing. Kudos from a fellow craftsman. Lots of love and hard work.

The dried out big log full of large knots probably tripled your work, did you keep track of the hours it took for this project.?
@buggsy55 жыл бұрын
Yep, a greener log would have been far simpler to shape. It might crack quite a bit, but probably far less than that dried out highly stressed log that was used.
