Paul Dukas - The Sorcerer's Apprentice (1937)
This rare early 1937 recording in mono is their first ever recording of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" composed by Paul Dukas and is a bit different than the later famous Mickey Mouse-version recorded for the film.
Walt Disney hired the orchestra to record the same song in stereo in 1938-1939 for his music-film-project "Fantasia" 1940.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice, poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1797). An apprentice sorcerer tries to animate a broom so that he does his job : filling a basin of water with buckets. No longer controlling his enchantment, he tries to destroy it with an ax, but he finds himself facing a second broom following the first to flood the house. His master finally arrives and repairs the damage caused by the apprentice.‎ Symphonic Scherzo: The work is scherzo only by spirit: the form of the sonata with 4 themes, with an introduction and coda of equal restraint. Introduction: Theme of Spells and the magic atmosphere of the laboratory: (00:02) The short introduction ("Slow enough" at 9/8) sketches the themes, while evoking the mysterious atmosphere of the laboratory: it closes with a muted orchestral tremolo.‎ (00:10) The second part of the theme is a little more familiar, it is a kind of overview of the Broom theme (here it expresses the inanimate Broom) Apprentice Theme: (00:52) Theme of the Magic Formula: (01:17) Well represents the hands of the wizard who make the gestures to activate the Broom. John Williams (Star Wars) (01:36) Then a brief chord( timpani kick); sudden silence.‎ The lively movement (scherzo) begins on a ternary rhythm at 3/8 in the tone of F minor.‎ Broom theme: (01:37) It is the motif "of the Enchanted Broom" that the Apprentice starts, first hesitating, (single note, single note, three notes, three notes, (01:49) the rhythm arises to the cool, (01:53) and" the famous Broom theme " finally begins, more and more obstinate (Bassoon in staccato) Water Theme: (02:16) On the high strings soon appears the motif "of Spells", whose fluidity evokes the runoff of water. The theme of water is now play illustrating the jumps that fill, and se theme alternate with that of the Broom.‎ (02:35) A 3rd theme of a primesautière verse. (chromatic descent) which illustrates the water that pours into a basin.‎ Apprentice Theme: (Merry) (02:58) Motif "of the Apprentice" (C minor), then comes to translate the joy of the reckless novice (the Apprentice). (Glokenspiegel and Oboe) the instruments to use poir express cheerfulness joy the apprentice who finds that his spell works perfectly (finally for now).‎ Broom Theme (Varied): (03:21) Development in ascending progression, where only the Broom and Apprentice themes play an active role, (04:03) (the theme of Spells and Water) forming a kind of sound background; (04:56) We reach a peak of intensity on 4 fortissimo chords of the whole orchestra. ‎ (05:40) The Apprentice tries to stop the Broom, he tries to throw the formula, because the poem of Goethe tells us, he has read the word "Stop..."the Apprentice forgets the magic word Stop, Stop! By we have enough of your services. Ah! I notice! Mahleur! Mahleur! I forgot the word!‎ (06:09) The re-exposure begins with the 4 violent axe blows 2 with the (timpani) and 2 with the (cymbals) splitting the Broom in half: (06:15) Frightening silence, from which arise again the initial theme of the scherzo (basswood, contrabasson and bass clarinet joins him) which seems to split itself (06:37). Each instrument corresponds to one of the 2 pieces of the Broom that gets up and goes back to work.‎ Apprentice Theme (Varied) (07:01) The patterns combine and become complicated in the same irresistible upward progression as before.‎ (07:40) The agitation grew to vertigo: distress of the Apprentice, whose theme is itself overwhelmed. (08:08) and The Water comes 2x faster. (08:27) (Superman theme John William) Theme of the Formula "THE GREAT MASTER" (utlra mighty): (08:45) On a 4th motif theme "incantation" that has been heard so far only incidentally, the domination and mastery of the master (brass) is distressed: theme that expands in the slow postlude to bring peace. Concludes with a big hit of musical conclusion and everything goes in order. (08:57) The pace of the Broom tries to come back but this time it's the end finally. (09:04) A last memory of the different motifs runs through the orchestra. we hear a variation of the theme of the Apprentice which now seems totally shameful. (09:48) And the work ends in 2 lively bars, on 4 orchestral tutti of the Broom theme, like a burst of ironic laughter (in the manner of Richard Strauss's Till Eulenspiegel, with which the rapprochement is necessary, at least as for the spirit). (the Disney version illustrates it by a masterful sweep to the back). ‎ Remarkable achievement, by the rigor and clarity of its construction, by the brilliant orchestral and rhythmic vivacity," the Sorcerer's Apprentice "reveals only one facet of Paul Dukas' much more complete genius:" Till Eulenspiegel", just quoted, does not reveal all Richard Strauss either. But these are small masterpieces of great masters.

Ne contrôlant plus son enchantement, il tente de le détruire à la hache, mais il se ‎retrouve face à un deuxième balai suivant le premier pour inonder la maison. (Glokenspiegel et Hautbois) les instruments à utiliser poir exprimer la gaieté la joie ‎l'apprenti qui constate que son sort fonctionne parfaitement (enfin pour l'instant).‎ Thème du Balai (Varié): ‎(03:21) Développement en progression ascendante, où seuls les thèmes du Balai et de l'Apprenti ‎jouent un rôle actif, ‎(04:03) (le thème des Sortilège et de l'Eau) constituant une sorte de fond sonore; ‎(04:56) On atteint un sommet d'intensité sur 4 accords fortissimo de tout l'orchestre. ‎ ‎(05:40) L'Apprenti essaye de stopper le Balai, il retente de lancer la formule, parce que nous dit le ‎poème de Goethe, il a oubié le mot "Arrête..." l'Apprenti oublie le mot magique Arrête, Arrête! Par nous avons assez de tes services. Ah! Je m'en aperçois! Mahleur! Mahleur! J'ai oublié le mot!‎ ‎(06:09) La réexposition commence avec les 4 coups de hache violents 2 avec les (timbales) et 2 avec les ‎‎(cymbales) fendant le Balai en deux: ‎ ‎(06:15) Effrayant silence, dont surgir de nouveau le thème initial du scherzo (bois graves, contrabasson ‎et la clarinette basse le rejoint) qui semble lui même se dédoubler (06:37). Dont chaque instruments correspond à un des 2 morceaux du Balai qui se relève et qui se remet au ‎boulot.‎ Thème de l'Apprenti (Varié) ‎(07:01) Les motifs se combinent et se compliquent dans la même progression ascendante, irrésistible, ‎que précédemment.‎ ‎(07:40) L'agitation grandi jusqu'au vertige: détresse de l'Apprenti, dont le thème est lui-même ‎submergé. (08:08) et L'Eau arrive 2x plus vite. ‎(08:27) (Superman theme John William)‎ Thème de la Formule "LE GRAND MAÎTRE" (utlra puissant): ‎(08:45) Sur un 4e motif thème "incantation" qui ne s'est fait entendre jusqu'ici qu'accessoirement, ‎s'affrime la domination et la maîtrise du maître (cuivres): thème qui s'élargit dans le lent postlude pour ‎ramener la paix. Conclut par un gros coup de conclusion musicale et tout rentre dans l'ordre. ‎(08:57) Le rythme du Balai essaye de revenir mais cette fois c'est la fin enfin. ‎(09:04) Un dernier souvenir des différents motifs traverse l'orchestre. on entend une variation du thème de l'Apprenti qui paraît maitenant totalement honteux. ‎(09:48) Et l'œuvre s'achève en 2 mesures vives, sur 4 tutti d'orchestre du thème du Balai, tel un éclat ‎de rire ironique (dans la manière de Till Eulenspiegel de Richard Strauss, avec lequel le rapprochement ‎s'impose, au moind quant à l'esprit). ‎(la version de Disney l'illustre d'ailleurs par un magistral coup de balai au derrière). ‎ Remarquable réussite, par la rigeur et la clarté de sa construction, par le brilliant orchestral et la vivacitê ‎rythmique, "l'Apprenti sorcier" ne dévoile qu'une facette du génie, beaucoup plus complet, de Paul ‎Dukas : "Till Eulenspiegel", qu'on vient de citer, ne révèle pas non plus tout Richard Strauss. Mais ce ‎sont là petits chef-dœuvre de grands maîtres.

However did you find this recording? Also, before Mickey used the spell to bring the broom to life, when he tried on the hat there was an extra bit of music that was not used in any other performance of The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Also, other performances have extended music parts which Fantasia did not have.

But the Shooting Stage and Recording Session begin was January 9th 1938.
