Love that Lawrence is quoting Tricky's solo in Saddest Tale!

So interesting to hear him imitating Nanton's style while still retaining his own

This is music not specially bound to a style, timeless. Like they say about Ellington: beyond category.

What is this style of jazz called? Was it popular in the 1960s, or is this plating older style?

This was a then-newer take on an original song Duke did back in 1927.

Big band, which had its roots in the 1920s and earlier, where Ellington got his start. It's quoting some things from New Orleans like the "Funeral March" but with the 1927 hip, modern, urban changes, and then solos over the 12 bar blues. Ellington updated the tune throughout his career so this is what a big band like Ellington's outfit sounded like in the 1960s, with then modern recording techniques. The Duke and the Count were the premiere practitioners of big band, but there were a lot of other good ones. I often think that rock/funk bands like Blood, Sweat & Tears, Chicago, or Earth, Wind & Fire continued the tradition.
