Better known by simply by their nickname DUCK, these multipurpose machines were developed in World War II to meet a variety of specialized needs.
They were produced by numerous manufacturers under license and thousands of them were completed during the war and well after in the early 1980s. They were in front line service throughout WWII, Korea, Vietnam and were only finally withdrawn from service in the States in 2014.
They remain still in service with a variety of overseas operators but for the past 30 years have become more well known shuttling tourists in a variety of cities on the East and West Coast as well as inland rivers and waterways.
While currently set up in its last civilian configuration to carry tourist along the Seattle waterfront, this one remains currently titled and registered and fully road legal as well as water certified and licenses. All of the original Coast Guard, NHTSA and Washington State records and documents from its commercial use days remain with the vehicle. It has received all of the updates and safety improvements mandated by various organizations until it was retired from the fleet in 2020.
More than a few of these have found their way into private ownership and a client in Louisiana has two on his property and uses them for family and friends to explore the bogs, swamps, lakes and rivers on his private estate.
