I love this sharpener, I even got another one with the upgrade kit so now I have 2 with 220, 320, 600, 800, Fine ceramic, and Leather strop. it works great for my needs, nice little system, can even do 15 and 17 degree edges!

I didn’t know there was an upgrade kit for the bench stone, please do share!
@robnaugle41495 ай бұрын
@@allthingsfighting4518 yeah, it is officially called the "Guided Sharpening System - Upgrade Kit". $40. Technically, it is for the older system that preceded the Benchstone but the plates fit the same. The strop plate does require you to remove about an 1/8" of leather on each end for it to fit in the Benchstone system but the other plates fit perfectly. I have 220, 320, Fine Ceramic on one and 600, 800, Leather strop on the other. The 15/17 guides are an extra addon as well.

Hey Pete, you might like this hack I use for stone or diamond plate sharpening that takes most of the technique away. I made a jig to put your stone on that sets it to your angle and run the blade horizontally against the face. Mirror edges by hand with very little skill seems like it's up your alley mate.

Worksharp makes an upgraded version of his called the “guided sharpening systems” with upgrade kit it’s under $100, the biggest virtue is that it’s stupid easy to use and gets knives very sharp fast.

The 320 grit are only useful for substantial edge damage or edge reprofiling, the 600 grit and the fine ceramic plate are sufficient to sharpen a knife. The Work Sharp Benchstone Tri is better than nothing, but in my opinion far from good and I do not hold the part suitable to learn freehand sharpening. There is nothing better then a real stone or plate, it does not have to be a Shapton or Naniwa for the beginning (although the Shapton Pro Ceramic Stones are not even expensive), for example a 1000 grit ceramic stone and a cheap knife are enough to practice. Then some video tutorials and get started. My recommendation for a usable set for the beginning, which can also be expanded well: a cheap 300-400 grit diamond plate from Amazon + 1000 grit Shapton Pro ceramic stone + leder strop + 1 micron diamond compound.

You started out with objectively wrong information and led into the cliche gatekeeping. This is exactly the kind of thing the internet is filled with, and people just getting into sharpening need to ignore.

@@CNYKnifeNut Arguments and suggestions? I don't claim to know everything about knife sharpening. What I have is over 40 years of experience and have tried a lot of things and learned what works, at least for me. I own many knives in a variety of steels, from simple carbon steel to super steels such as Maxamet and also have experience with super alloys such as Terravantium. I've gotten every knife razor sharp so far.

Because, I believe, the point of this exercise is not to have perfect edge bevels it’s to show how fast freehand can actually be. Never worry about the time on each side it’s about raising a burr.
