Join me on a relaxed End of Autumn photo walk around the Forest of Dean, with a Nikon D750. I make the best out of dull weather and happen to come away with a couple of images. Which one did you prefer? The woodland photography, wildlife photography or up close nature photography? Let me know in the comments!

Let me know how you'd photograph that tree at the end! Some great suggestions already!

I saw the light on the foreground leaves. I would like to go right, looking for more fall of light across the tree trunk. In post, contrasty black and white. Ideally, I would use a Canon TS-E lens. 24mm or maybe 17mm.

I'd come back when it's dark, then light up the tree with different light sources. Long exposure, F/11-ish to get the whole tree...

The main issue that I see to compose that tree is that if you want to include the whole tree (you could perhaps explore compositions where you isolate a part of the tree) is that inevitably you end up bringing so much of the sky into the frame and being so much brighter than the rest of the scene it becomes a distraction. Maybe in a different season, with full autumn colours and foliage still on the branches or in a foggy spring morning could work too, so many options :)

The mention of "Forest of Dean" immediately brought a picture of Harry Potter apparating into that frame for me. :D

Awesome video Courtney! I really liked the first two shots, especially that panorama. There's something about that format that I always find so calming, I think I read somewhere that it has to do with the fact that it emulates how we see the world, horizontally, and it makes you travel through the frame from side to side just like you do in real life. Beautiful work!

Again thanks for sharing your experience with great comments...shots of tree are ok unless you could move back to capture some more surrounding areas...I wish it was cool and foggy here ...today 40c ... cheers from Australia 😀

Some nice images in this Courtney, shame about the fog! I think I would have probably approached that lovely gnarly tree by the lake by standing a bit further back from where your vlogging camera was and go in tight on the body of the tree with a telephoto, maybe even a pano across the mid section cropping out the sky?

The foggy and misty mornings seem to evade me these days haha. I'll catch it one day but it clearly wasn't meant to be for that particular morning. Ooh an interesting take. I like the idea of experimenting with a pano, something that didn't occur to me at the time! Thanks for watching, Jamie.

Fantastic photos as always! Excellent question about how to compose the shot of the cool tree at the end. I could see the frustration of knowing there's a composition to be had, but the conditions not really working in your favor. Early morning fog would probably help. If only we could summon weather and light on command! I would probably have focused in on a few branches and edited it back and white or just half the tree. I really hope you get to go back when there is some cool fog and light to be had, it is just a fantastic looking tree!!

There have been some great suggestions regarding the tree composition and everyone seems to have a different idea which is really cool! Some fog or mist on the water would be really nice. Yes! I think if I could have a super power that would be a handy one haha! You'd get perfect conditions every time. I'll definitely go back to that tree and see what I can do, a little project to work on haha! Thanks for watching.

Regarding the tree, and what to "do" with it: is there any chance that you could return there late in the evening, or even at night? That way, you can completely get rid of the background, if you want to. You can illuminate the tree with a torch, by shining it over the parts of the tree you want to be seen. This will take some experimenting, but the cost for this is just more bad pictures to delete when you get home. In general I have found that some scenes are best photographed when I provide the only light,so that I can control the light to suit my wants and needs. This may take a lot of experimenting, and sometimes I don't get what I want, but I find it very fun anyway.

Just a little dance here hahaha. There was zero music saved to my phone for some reason and there wasn't any wifi reception in the area so I ended up dancing in silence lol! I'm afraid the brownie isn't for sharing, but if it helps it was very delicious! ;)

Beautiful images Courtney. Made me wish I was there shooting those autumn colours. Those ducks just can't hold their liquor haha! Christmas brownie looked good too. I'm so glad I kept my D750, I do love the colours and video that comes out of that camera. Thanks for sharing the video.

For some reason I have never used the D750 for video footage until recently. I'm beginning to use it a little more, although regarding the footage in this video I should clearly use a tripod as boy do my hands shake haha! Thanks for watching, Adrian! Have a great week.

There was a very brief glimpse of the tree as a reflection in the very still water, with part of a submerged log in the fore. Looked possible.

Unsure how far back that you go, on your many video's, but I thought I'd take a shot, or...option as you may, on 'the tree'. I'm unsure how far you might choose to go on the 'art' of photography, but one option is to get as clear an image of the tree as possible, not worrying so much about the background. A low shot where the beginning is out of focus somewhat, to the tree being as clear as possible. During post, adding your own sky is one thing I would try. Here in western Canada we too have dull, foggy days (we have one today!) and today's Ai does a wonderful job when adding a sky enhancement. I've taken many of my own 'sky textures' of which I can add, but I also have the skies that come with applications. I tend to use Skylum, or Luminar Neo at the moment, and I've been leaving Lightroom by the side, and the more I use Luminar Neo the more I've become comfortable in using it. They are your photo's, your art...being no different than if you had painted the end result image, 'you' get to choose the colours within the image, as you do with photography. You do the work to 'get' the image, so you can enhance it, as you would if you where painting.

Yeah, but I have 6 donuts with icing sugar and sprinkles :) :P And, if I were going to get a shot of that tree, I would see if the sun came up behind the tree in the morning and get a full on silhouette shot of the tree in the bright morning light. Preferably with a bit of fog around.

How to photograph the tree presented an interesting idea. What if you were use multiple nd’s, low iso and long time. You could then use a torch to light some aspects of the tree. You could even wait for less natural light.

Some gorgeous images again, I loved the Pano shot. Regarding the tree composition, I'd have gone for something like you showed in the b-roll, using the bank as a leading line and getting as much reflection as possible. I reckon that's gonna look great with some light👍 Also, I have white chocolate pretzel flipz and you don't 🖖😂
@CourtneyVictoria
@CourtneyVictoria 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't done a pano in forever! It was nice to do one for a change. Nice, I was really leaning towards using that bank almost as a leading line to the tree too, just with better light haha! An idea for the future, I'm pretty sure the wind has blown off all those last autumn leaves by now. Damn white chocolate pretzels. I am quite jealous!

Not sure when you shot this but I think around our way autumn has finally left us. I have been contemplating getting to the woods for one last effort before I start my Winter "what shall I shoot now" ? project. Frosty leaves on the ground do appeal to me although my previous attempts have never been great. I like the opening image but liked the colourful footage before the desaturated version you posted.. Loved the p[ano style crop of the image at 1:24 - still lots of colour there for the viewer for sure... like everywhere pockets of it to be had possibly. I suppose we should be used to the weather forecasters not getting it right but I know how you feel. "the other Side" well seen and taken... I must try harder to get one of these. A nice mixture of chat, footage & images Courtney. atb Al

I believe I filmed this early last week. I was surprised how much colour was still left but I can imagine it has gone by now, although I haven't been out to the woods myself yet to look. I probably should have put the colour version of that first image in as well for comparison, but for some reason during post processing I didn't get on with it. One I'll probably go back to in a few weeks to try and edit again. Thanks for watching, appreciate it!

Brilliant images and great compositions and great sense of humour. Enjoyed your video thank you for sharing it the tree at the end would be a great photo in the right condition. It would be interesting if you came back to it in another video. If you could approach it from across the pond with some reflection might work well not sure if it's possible though thank you once again

Hi Courtney! I realise this video is now 11 months old, but I wanted to comment on it anyway! You were asking how people might compose the tree. Well, one of the things I've been doing quite a lot recently when photographing trees, is just focusing on one section of the tree, or just some of the branches. Perhaps a pattern or shape that you find appealing in some way. There! That's my thoughts anyway.
