Dumb Decisions: The STUPIDEST Penalty Acceptance EVER | Rams @ Falcons (1980)

Күн бұрын

In a 1980 week 8 NFL game between the Los Angeles Rams and Atlanta Falcons, Rams head coach Ray Malavasi, for some reason, decided to accept a 5-yard penalty to give the Falcons another chance at converting on 3rd down. And to say that this questionable decision came back to bite them would be an understatement, as Malavasi's awful decision not only led the Falcons to score a touchdown, but led them to win the game and win the NFC West. This is a breakdown of that dumb decision
NOTE: There is a mistake in the video that I was unable to catch before it going live. The game took place on October 26, NOT November 2

Only time I heard Scully blatantly calling out a decision was as Game 6 of the '86 WS was going to the bottom of the 10th..you could hear him say as they go to commercial "if he's good enough to bunt, how they didn't have Howard Johnson" (cuts off at that point but you can figure out the rest if you remember how the game went). Others he characterized as "roll of the dice" like PH Gibson in Game 1 of 1988 WS

@@matthewdaley746 It was HoFer Tony Dorsett that fumbled twice and dropped a perfect pass in that game. Neither QB had a great game as both defenses played well. The next year was the Joe Montana to Dwight Clark game. The year after that White was put out of the game early. The season after that he lit up the Skins though the rest of the season wasn't so great. White wasn't Staubach, but he was definitely good enough. He didn't have near the support that Staubach had and other teams were beginning to figure out Landry's schemes and he refused to adapt. Love Landry (I think some Cowboys' fans still pray to him) but his lack of adapting late in his career is what eventually sunk him and the team.

Great video. You did a wonderful job laying out this story. And I'm glad you raised the Dolphins' story from over the weekend. Always take 4th and 11 and not 3rd and 21--But you're right, it was a preseason game so I'll cut the coach some slack. The video presented today about the regular season game and its impact was awesome. I remember this 1980 game and Malavasi's decision. Great job today and its impact on the NFC West.
@duelist301
@duelist301 2 жыл бұрын
Ironically, it's statistically better to take the penalty in the Dolphins case. 4th and 11 has a 25% chance to convert; as where 3rd and 21 only has a 12% chance to convert.

@@duelist301 It likely wasn't a mistake, but people are too caught up in "two chances" to look at the total odds of the chances. This isn't 4th and 6 vs 3rd and 11. 3rd and 21 is a very tough conversion with two tries and the chance to get part of it in each play. Even if this exact game state with the 4th and 11 better for the Bucs than the 3rd and 21, maybe because of the personnel on the field or other facts, it's not going to be tremendously better to pass on the penalty. And it would be less of a mistake than most coaches make not going for it on 4th at least once every game.

I’ll defend it to my dying day. Peyton Manning is the ONLY QB on earth that justifies a 4th and 3 conversion attempt in your own territory with a lead. You gotta move the chains, you cannot under any circumstance give this ball to Peyton with even 45 seconds to play and a timeout. Manning would get so hot especially in the 4th qtr of games. Sometimes the only defense against Peyton is a good offense that keeps him off the field. Even then, not guaranteed. The Dolphins in one game had 43 minutes of TOP to the colts less than 17. Manning still won. In that game you mentioned, the Colts had scored on 5 straight possessions. The Pats weren’t even offering resistance at that point.I’ll defend Belichick to the death on that 4th and 3 decision

You are talking about Cowboys v. Cardinals 2011, right? Jason Garrett “iced” Dan Bailey just before he made what would have been a game winning field goal. Predictably, he missed the second one, and the Cardinals went on to win in OT. As a Cowboys fan, I still see that game as the turning point in the season. Going into that game, they were 7-4 and riding a 4 game winning streak. After that game, they had another last second kicking fiasco against the giants, and the wheels totally came off from there.

Back in 2000, Purdue's Joe Tiller accepted a holding penalty against Michigan in the first half. Drew Henson had been carving Purdue up all half and it was 21-10. It went from 3rd and 10 at the 15(?) to 3rd and 20, instead of 4th and 10 with an incomplete pass. Henson threw a beautiful pass touchdown. Coach Joe Tiller, when interviewed, said "That was the coaching staff's fault. We'll have to apologize to the players." Drew Brees led a comeback from down 28-10 at the half to win 32-31 on a last-second field goal. So that's when a bad decision made for one of the most wonderful comebacks in a team's history. But that's not how it usually happens.

That’s the Jets for you. Hell in 2019, they beat a good Dallas Cowboys team, only to lose to the no win Dolphins.

I agree with the overall point you're making, but just one problem with your argument of why a Falcons interception was unlikely: you're largely basing it on how they played against the Saints, a team that went 1-15 that year and was the worst defense in the league by all measures.

My knee jerk reaction is to agree with you but not for the reason you think. Oftentimes in college the offensive team will take a delay of the game penalty, in order to get a better angle on he field goal attempt. That would be the best worst case scenario.

I wish you would have told the actual yard line on the interception return and where the 1st field goal would have been kicked from. If it's a third and 10 from the 35.and you get a holding call that backs it up to the 45. Especially depending on score and how much time is left. Likewise making a third in one in the red zone turn into a third and 11 against a good running team that will definitely go for it on 4th down. You're kind of implying it's always a mistake taking the penalty on third down and it's not

Honest question: are there any plans to cover the Seahawks' infamous Super Bowl goal-line pass as either a "Dumb Decision" or "In Defense Of" episode? I feel like there's an argument for it to be either/or, and I'd like to have a little more peace of mind knowing whether or not New England just made a better play than us, or whether we truly beat ourselves.

Patriots had very little chance of stopping "Beast" Lynch on that play.... So I think you can only say it was bad, bad call. 3 things can happen when you pass and 2 end game

Although it is timely to revisit with the $49M quarterback having been the one to throw the pass, a fact lost to history (as if Russ went out for that play and T-Jack got his shot at SB immortality) Plus it has one of the most iconic aftermaths in history, with the Patriots losing the next two to the Hawks.............wait for it............. On the 1-yard line

Looked like they made more than 11 yards on the first play so outcome based not necessarily a bad call

I disagree a bout Dokphins penalty. It played out how it would play out 90% of the time if I accept it, the clock is also a factor. Remember, they didn't get it on 3rd. Down, so it was the same situation , plus a clock which was a major factor, I argue, he made the correct decision

Also the Dolphins still won that game the Bucs needed a field goal and missed it after Dolphins took a time out before the first attempt of the kick.

The crazy thing is, after that TD, Mazzetti actually missed the PAT. Fallacy of predetermined outcomes and all that, but there's a shockingly good chance that he misses the FG even if he takes it from the 2.

If the Rams don’t lose the game to the Falcons 13-10 the Rams win the NFC West and get to host a playoff game instead of the Falcons. But the Rams will have to play the NFC Wild Card Game vs Cowboys at Dallas two weeks after the Rams beat the Cowboys 38-14 at Anaheim Stadium. Cowboys defeat the Rams 34-13 and turbulence hits the Rams for 2 years. QB Vince Ferragamo among others get into a contract dispute with upper management and he bolts for the CFL. The next season Pat Haden starts at QB and the Rams finish 6-10, missing the playoffs for the first time since 1972. In 1982 in which the season was shortened to 9 games because of the players strike, the Rams finish 2-7. Ray Malavasi is fired at seasons end. Sure the Rams went to the Super Bowl in Malavasi’s second season as HC but I wouldn’t call him the greatest HC the Rams have ever had.

No, Sean McVay, is, he went into, Tampa Bay, took Tom Brady's, greatest, punches, looked him in the face and, said, "that all you got," to which Tom Brady replied, "yeah, that's about it."
