Depends on *when* we're talking about. Gandalf in his true form, the Maia Olórin, was incredibly powerful. Think Biblical angel powerful. However, when Eru Ilúvatar (God) and the Vala Manwë (his chief archangel) sent Olórin and the four other chosen Maiar to Middle-earth, they became known as the Istari. These five angels were given human-like bodies resembling old men, and became severely limited in what power they could exercise. This way, the mortal races of Middle-earth could *themselves* fight off the remnants of Melkor (later known as Morgoth, basically Satan) and his most trusted lieutenant, the fallen Maia Mairon (later known as Sauron), with the Istari basically nudging the mortals in the right direction. And for 2,019 years, Gandalf did just that before returning to Aman (*kinda* like Heaven). So yeah, the ultimate badass, Grand Sorcerer Dumbledore would * completely wipe the floor * with any of the Istari, Gandalf included. But the story is far different if we're talking about Olórin.

Grindelwald too. In the beginning of the first movie of Fantastic beasts, Grindelwald did non verbal wandless magic killing 5 aurors at once. In the first movie of Fantastic beast, when he was Mr Graves, he didn’t even cast a spell with wand to get Newt’s case and tie him, Tina and Jacob. Just moved his hand once then he could tie two skilled wizard and witch. When he was chasing after Credence and Tina fought against him, he just used his hand to move a car to against Tina. In Fantastic beasts second movie, when he was in the prison of MACUSA, Grindelwald’s wand was taken by MACUSA. However he could still transform himself into Abernathy without any polyjuice potion nor wand. When he escaped from the prison, on the carriage, he didn’t cast a spell but he could control 3 other wands to kill their owners. (Btw, when Grindelwald could control others’ wands, Voldemort couldn’t even control his own wand well) Also in the second movie, when he was telling his followers about Credence, he just blew air then the picture he wanted to show appeared. No wand and spell at all. In the second movie, when he met Credence and Nagini on the rooftop, he flied a note to Credence without spell and wand too. Lastly in the second movie, tho he used the Elder wand without spell to create the blue flame at first, Grindelwald didn’t hv to further use his wand to control the blue flame to burn the aurors. After he left, his blue flame grew even stronger and fought against 6 aurors including powerful Nicholas Flammel. 6 aurors were needed to defeat a non verbal wandless without host magic. *Only Voldemort needed a wand and said Avada Kedavra to kill people.

It's established in the books that wizards and witches can use and perform magic even without wands. Tom Marvolo Riddle was able to use this on a conscious level, with most young witches and wizards only doing so as a sort of fight or flight reflex. I really wish they extended that duel in The Order of the Phoenix to match the book, it was too short and they made him look too weak. Although it was an exquisite scene more could have been done to make it just that much better. I would have loved to see Dumbledore throw the rope to strangle Voldemort, have at least one statue come alive while also having Fawkes rebirth to block Voldemort’s Avada Kadavras. They had Dumbledore mainly on defense the whole time except for the water ball when in the books they were taking turns.

I agree, but you have to think of budgets as well. That scene was probably extremely expensive.

I believe the movie version of the duel is more realistic. Due to Dumbledore’s personality, I think he wouldn’t choose to fight with full power and be offensive in front of Harry, because he knew that he might trigger Voldemort even more, and the duel will become more furious and might hurt Harry by doing so. A wise wizard like he is, should use little strength and simply be defensive and waiting for help from coming allies like he did in the movie. Because Dumbledore cared more about Harry’s safety than a victory of a duel.

From the book during Dumbledore and Voldemorts duel. Dumbledore had it all under control. He was toying with Voldemort. You do not seek to kill me, Dumbledore?' called Voldemort, his scarlet eyes narrowed over the top of the shield. 'Above such brutality, are you?' 'We both know that there are other ways of destroying a man, Tom,' Dumbledore said calmly, continuing to walk towards Voldemort as though he had not a fear in the world, as though nothing had happened to interrupt his stroll up the hall. “Merely taking your life would not satisfy me, I admit -' 'There is nothing worse than death, Dumbledore!' snarled Voldemort. @ElizabethsLizard3 жыл бұрын
Both actually match Dumbledore pretty well. The first Dumbledore (Richard Harris) matches what Dumbledore typically is, a wise, mysterious, and sometimes silly old man. This fits very well in the first two movies/books that he was in, as we get to see the wisdom of Dumbledore and why Harry regarded him the way he did. The second Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) matches what we see happen more and more often as the books go on - the more anguished, angrier, and the more powerful side of Dumbledore. We still see some of the mysterious and silly side of Dumbledore, but we also see why Dumbledore is regarded as such a powerful wizard. He can hold his own very well in a duel for his age, he can cast very powerful magic, and he is able to get the attention of others very easily. Both very well portray the two sides of Dumbledore. I’ll admit, I do prefer the second Dumbledore, simply for the fact that I can’t really imagine the first one holding his own in a duel at all. Gambon managed to play both aspects, and really seemed powerful and able to hold his own.

The first Dumbledore seemed to me like a kind old man who’d forget my name the next time I talked to him. I really hope the reason Dumbledore was so neurotic throughout Goblet of Fire was cause he was stressed about organizing and hosting the tournament

Gambons Dumbledore portrayed the "wizard that even Voldemort feared" better. Both versions are amazing still and suited the tone of their movies.

In the the book of the Order of the Phoenix, we see him attack the death eaters before finding Voldemort, and immediately after seeing him, they decided running was better than fighting. They didn't get very far

He doesn't even need a wand ... GENIUS !!
@YueLynn_11163 жыл бұрын
Actually casting spells or jinx without wand is pretty normal in wizard world. The wand is just for accuracy, if one wizard or witch is powerful enough, they can just leave his or her wand away.
@ralphfrederickdouglas3 жыл бұрын
@@YueLynn_1116 Not really. Powerful spells require a wand (as confirmed by Voldemort in the graveyard monologue) and average wizards can't do wandless magic in normal situations.
@carua24313 жыл бұрын
@@YueLynn_1116 no, that's not true. In the books no one cast spells without a wand except for kids who can't control themselves and even them can't use real spells, only magic.
@Animesh9273 жыл бұрын
@@carua2431 I mean you can't use avada kedavra without the wand but stuff like blowing out candles can be done as shown in the movie. Remember in the first book quirell would have thrown Harry off his broom in a few seconds had Snape not interfered and that was quirell. Dumbledore is worth ten of quirell so you can expect him to do that stuff.
@carua24313 жыл бұрын
@@Animesh927 oh yeah that's possible of course, because those aren't spells but magic in general, like when harry make his hair grow when he is a child. The point is that movies make the characters do a lot of these things and it's a bullshit, like doumbledore "arresto momentum" with his finger. Or the fact that all death eater and order of phoenix fly in black and white fog, while in the books the only ones that can fly are voldemort and piton

there's a scene in book 6 that i wished was kept in the movies. it was when dumbledore pointed his wand to the bowl containing the locket horcrux, and harry was in awe because this was his first time seeing a real wizard "figure out" things because they found out later, the only way to retrieve the horcrux was to drink the water in the bowl.
