In this video clip i am showing a few of foundation exercises i am using in Mighty's day to day training. These foundation games keep my trainnig from getting to formal and ensures that training is a fun "game" for him. Please refer to the video clip called Mighty Puppy training @ 10 wks seg. 2 to watch these foundation exercises.
You will see how i ask Mighty to spin & twist, to engage his mind and body prior to training. You will see how i implement the puppy targetting into a get ready command. And how i ask him to spin from the side in heeling which helps to keep his rear in. I am very pleased with his retrieve work. But that also is build upon a strong foundation. In the puppy video i show Mighty marking to a white cookie and then pulling me out to it on the lead, and once he gets the cookie, immediately running back to me. I did this many times with a cookie and then a toy in numerous training sessions. Then when i started the retrieve, i did this same thing with the dumbell. First on a 6 foot lead and then moving to a flexi. This ensured that he didn't get the opportunity to run out and hit it with his feet. make a loopy return loop or doddle back with the dumbell. By being on the lead and from my foundation game, he learnt to plck up and return quickly. You also see how he goes thru my legs to front. This keeps him from slowing down as he returns to me in anticipation of a front. If i don't say thru and open my leg and stand straight up in front position, then he will front. By training this way you are adding in some unpredictablity to your training which your dog will very much enjoy!
