I didn't know if it was a cultural thing or something because I know some words and sayings are slightly different in different countries sometimes, but spitting image is definitely correct where I'm from (the UK). There even used to be a fairly well known TV show by that name - called that because it used puppets that looked like caricature versions of celebrities in funny sketches and the name referred to the fact that the puppets were 'the spitting image' of the people they were based on
