Early 2000 I had a 5 year military assignment in NATO. During a 3 week course at a military base in Italy (we were all wearing uniforms) I was approached by 2 americans attending the same course as me. They asked if they could help me escape to USA so I did not have to live in a socialist/communist country. When I very confused tried to explain that I was quite happy living in Norway their response was even more disturbing. They asked if my refusal to escape was because my relatives in Norway was being held in prison and would be executed if I did not return. It still confuses me to this day why a country would send dumb dumbs like that to represent their country in uniform.

We also from time to time have some from Marine Core at winter survival courses in Northern Norway. Some of them likes is so much they do not wantvto return to Trumpist MAGA US, but rather stay in a communist /socialist country with decent health care and free University education. Polite Police, in most cases unarmed. 4-5 weeks payed holidays pr year etc etc.

Give them some slack.. if this story is even true, I guess they’ve heard of north Korea or something similar. It was good intentions and that is in my opinion much more telling than anything else. I don’t think ridicule is contributing to anything good. Have you ever thought about what it might say about us when we so obviously have fun on other peoples behalf? Shouldn’t we know better?

Oh, I've heard worse. I ilive in a very small community (around 80 people) in the innermost part of a fjord in Northern Norway. There is not a lot of Americans coming here, but it happens. Here's a few quotes of things I've heard from them personally over 20+ years: - Where's the nearest subway station, I wanna go to your university - Where are all the polar bears? I wanna shoot one, my brother dared me to do so. - When are you going on a whate hune? Can I join? - You're not a Norwegian, you're not blonde. - We're in Sami territory, why aren't you dressed as one? (No Sami here at all...) - How can I get back to Europe? - (Watching my 18 years old nephew having a beer with me, and asks his age). Why isn't anyone calling the police? - Where can we meet real vikings? Me: the viking age ended almost 1000 years ago. American: LIAR - are you hiding them in your basement? - Where can I buy a gun? Me: you can't. American: what is this shithole of a country? - and more... And btw, Norway being the capital of Sweden, that one is more common than you may think.

Was studying with an american exchange student back in university. A total gem of a girl, but I have to admit she wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. I remember m The first day when I met her. We were having a get-to-know-each-other-party between all students and I asked her if she had any expectations for her time here and she said, and I quote, "I honestly don't know where to start. I never imagined I would be able to visit Swedens largest capital". Not THE capital of sweden, which was bad enough. She believed Norway was the biggest, meaning apparently Sweden have several capitals. It took me over an hour to prove to her that 1. Sweden only has one capital, just as any other country in the world... 2. Norway is not Swedens capital 3. And no, Norway is not even a city of sweden, but a whole separate and independent country of it's own.

It is impossible to have midnight sun and northern lights in a single trip. The first guarantees 24 hours of daylight, the second requires the dark.

One time I was in Dominican Republic, I talked to a street performer and he asked me where I was from. I said Norway, and he replied 'where is that?" I said it was a country in Northern Europe. Then I asked where he was from and he answered Manhattan. I know where Manhattan is, but he answered like it should be common knowledge to know a neighbourhood in a unknown city within a unknown country. Still he don't even know that Norway is a country in Eurpe.

I had some American youths telling me they were told before going to Norway that they would see polar bears roaming around in the streets of our cities. Also; when I was a student I worked in a grocery store, and two Americans came to pay for their groceries. I heard them speaking English, so I spoke with them in English. Then they told me: "Man, you Norwegians do know how to speak English!" I have learnt it at school since I was about nine years old, we watch movies and TV series in their native language, mostly American, and I lived at the biggest student housing in Bergen. So yeah, we know how to speak English!

I explained to an American, while I was traveling, that I lived in East Africa. He asked me if we had houses and clothes there, and said it must be very dangerous with all the Lions there. I responded jokingly that he was right, but it was even worse with the lack of food there. "I had to eat three neighbors last year because I ran out of food!" I told him. He moved away from me, clearly afraid that I might eat him.

speaking of evil socialites. I am from Norway but live in Sweden. these 2 countries have pretty much the same political structure and the same welfare. I got cancer and so far have had 6 doctor visits and been hospitalized for 4 days and had an 8 hour operation to remove the cancerous lumps on my neck. I have to wait radiation treatment 5 days a week for 7 weeks. All I have paid is 80 us$ and don't have to pay anything more and that includes taxi transport 10 miles 5 days a week for 7 weeks. so I'm not complaining about our nasty socialism

Norwegian here. The Northern Lights/Midnight sun made me remember two stories I've been told from friends working as receptionists at hotels in northern Norway. One of them was approached by middle-aged American woman that was very unhappy when she asked when the Midnight sun would rise and was informed that it's the regular sun not setting. So no midnight sun sunrise to see. The other had an American couple in middle of the winter asking for the midnight sun. My friend was like "you mean the northern lights, right? Aurora Borealis?". No, they wanted to see the midnight sun and had read online that the best time of the year to see it was summer. So they traveled to Norway when it's summer in the Southern Hemisphere. They hadn't thought about the opposite seasons of there northern and Southern Hemisphere. Fortunately a couple of nights of stunning northern lights seemed to do the trick and they were very happy when they checked out, despite the lack of midnight sun.

Polar bears don't generally wander around the streets of Longyearbyen in Svalbard. They're way too dangerous to be allowed to do that. Polar bears (around 3000) do habitate the wilderness in Svalbard. Therefore you need to bring a gun when traveling into the wilderness. However, polar bears can move to areas with humans like camps, tents, huts and even the outskirts of Longyearbyen. The bears are looking for food. So you need guns even close to your home. You can compare this with grizzly bears in USA. They're not living in the streets of US cities, but you might encounter one occasionally in the outskirts.

I think a lot of U.S. Americans (not all) have delusions of grandeur their whole life or are accustomed to this mindset because USA USA and all that. Then they travel, and suddenly feel small, and must go around talking to natives like they know everything and know it better than themselves. It's just dissonance, really. Well that, AND a lack of education or any form of attempt at self-improvement... Again, these are *NOT* representative of a typical U.S. American (yes this is the proper term outside of USA, since "American" is non-descriptive beyond the entire New World) and most U.S. citizens are nice and friendly and outgoing. And likewise, considering the foundationless grandeur and boasting demeanour of some of these, there's absolutely _no_ reason for anyone to try and defend it, nor is there any reason for someone from USA that is at least somewhat cognizant to feel offended.

I'm halfway through and I just want to say, USA didn't "take" much from Native Americans, in their defense: When USA was established, there wasn't many Native reserves left, and initially it wasn't like the Native Americans was sprawled across EVERYWHERE at this massive continent; they were nomadic. It's rather that "modern" borders had to be set up of sorts, during and after the colonialist Era. I mean, still, it's horrible by today's standards, but it's often said without context or understanding, even from Northern Americans themselves. What they did to Mexico was arguably worse, however Mexico/Spain was in turn worse than that again, in these areas... If someone from elsewhere in the world should complain about USA and its treatment of natives, they should rationally mention Peru, Colombia, Mexico or Spain instead. Way, way, WAY worse. Not everything was exactly planned like that (disease has most of the fault), but it was in practice literally genocide in the millions. And most other nations in "the new world" has a similar story, just to varying degrees.

The skiteam one... Not the dumbest, we are great at skiing, mostly. Allthouygh some unlucky kids don't have the resources or interest to ski, it is not like 50 years ago. This winter there was a snowdump that came very sudden so the buses couldn't hamndle it. Do americans not have any perception of time? The vikings were not the native people of norway, the Sami are.

The sami has status as «urfolk» as deceided by norwegian goverment. The samis came from east of the ural mountains, while at the same time germanic tribes started populating Norway. However the samis are a minorty in Norway with their own culture, language and ways of life different to the average norwegian. The idea is to protect the samis from the majority so that they are less likely to be be discriminated by the majority. So the american claim that the vikings (here: norse-germanic) were native is as correct as claiming that the samis are native. The only differences are that what people referred to as viking is a boring white norwegian today, while some of the samis live a life similar to what they did hundreds of years ago.

@@Onnarashi Yes, thank you. The oppression part is true, though. However it was never as bad as the worst imperialist nations and I like to believe both Sami and non-Sami here wish each other well. Oh and the Sami never travelled far South, and their routes must be seen in correlation with a borderless map (at least for early history). But yes, Norwegians are the only native people south of Narvik or further North (can't remember right now) which is the absolute vast majority of coast, landmass and population.

The grand irony about the 'VA-Health Care' in the USA is that before the laws changed back in January of 2019 it pretty much worked the same way as it does for everyone in Norway and not just for the veterans, but only on a much smaller scale. If a veteran didn't have basic health insurance coverage when applying for 'VA-Health Care', they were in fact taxed for said health care, just like every Norwegian over the age of 18 years old is to this day. Although this changed when the laws changed at the start of 2019 and they didn't get taxed the same way when filing their taxes in 2020. -----

Oslo, Norway: Dear Tyler W! I enjoy contradicting you! You say that it's crazy of Americans to insist in arguments with Norwegians on things in Norway being like this and that, against what the Norwegians say they are. Well, then: I would like to correct you about Norway being so beautiful all over that nothing in the USA can compete! There are plenty of ugly places in Norway, plenty of dull landscapes, plenty of places where nature is destroyed by ugly buildings and 'development', - they are just not displayed in travel advertisements etc and tourists are not taken on boastful tours there! And although I have not visited so much of the USA, unfortunately, I have seen plenty of pictures, films and what have you to be impressed at beautiful places there! So am I crazy to insist you are wrong about your country? Re 'treehuts': It is a fact, though, that Norwegian houses are mostly made of wood, not of bricks or cement or stone! Wooden housing is cheaper to build, although it has to be maintained to a greater extent - painted at a few years' interval etc. Wooden houses are easier to keep warm too.
