Looks like a very solidly made device. With all the high quality non Chinese parts you are going in the right direction with this.

That's a great looking dummy load box, I think I will build one myself it would be handy for radio alignments.

Last year I bought four 8.2 OHM resistors on EBAY (yes Chinese) to make a dummy load but never got around on making it. Mine was going to be stereo 4 * 8 OHM only because I have no need for 16 OHM load. I never made it because I get very little radio repair and no stereo repair. Terry's design is very good.

Thanks Bill. It is certainly a well made unit and one that would last. We'll see how it goes... thanks my friend.

Hi Ron, I enjoy seeing people who are enterprising and industrious. You are one of them. All power to you and I hope sales are good. Who knows where else this venture might lead. All the best from Phil.

Hey Ron thanks for the video! I built one in a different enclosure. Works great!! Wondering how and what it would take to add a watt meter to it?

I tought the whole idea of a dummyload as this was so you could run the amp at full load for some minutes to see how the amp perfomed under load. Something you can't do with speakers. The resistors here are strong enough to handle it, but the box and the wiring is not. Why do it just halfway and not a complete testbox? And also, if you use 2 og these boxes, and connect both to your scope, you end up shorting together the negative of both channels. That might be a bad thing.

Geir, frankly not sure what you are trying to say, but I am using solid core wire rated at 600V. This is meant to be a testing device to check an amp or radio. It can run for a while with no problem, but left running for a long period of time will generate heat. Regarding using 2 boxes, that is up to the end user ; my box was built with quality and will do a great job for the average user if directions are followed. Thank you for your insight

@@rciancia I was just wondering why you choose 50watt resistors (it looks like), and a big switch (good choices both), and then the thin wires that looks like it's not able to handle that kind of load. And what has 600volts to do with it, you never have high voltages on the speaker outputs do you? I would have went for heavy gauge (and heat resistant) wires over high voltages in an application like this. But if this is for quick tests of guitar amps, then it might be ok?

Great video, Ron! Hope you've sold some boxes, they look great and well made. My purpose for a dummy load is a little different though. I have a non master volume guitar amp - a Fender 5E3 clone - in which I've had the external speaker output jack altered to a line level output by a qualified tech. It works just fine, I can take the "line" output to my audio interface and get the sound of the amp into the DAW. BUT: The way it's wired, I have to use the internal speaker also, so my dummy box has to run for hours and hours. Is there anything I can do differently to make it stand the heat? Buy another type of resistor or anything? B.r. Svend. (The amp is 15W and 8 Ohm)

How many watts does your amp push peak and is the speaker a 4ohm or 8ohm ?

What’s the purpose of the resistor between the signal in and the BNC out if you don’t mind me asking? Only reason I can think of is to create an integrated 10X “probe”, which isn’t a bad idea at all.
@rciancia

Sebastian - The resistor serves as protection if the jacks are ever shorted.. it would limit/prevent any damage to the dummy load box, etc.
