Dumpster Diving bees needed to go before we got to this chimney removal

This massive swarm congregated on a dumpster and we wanted to get them before the sun started to make them active. We had Jean, Caroline, and Christina out with us that day.

Huge swarm. Likely from a commercial operation and not all from one hive. The atmosphere from the beekeepers seemed more social than getting down to the business of recovering the bees. If you put all those in one hive it would be at least 5 or 6 deeps high in order to get frames in each box. We didn't get to see the ending so there is not telling how everything turned out.

It was a giant. Yes this was definitely more fun than work. In the video we get them all into 4 deeps and one Nuc. They were then combined into a long Langstroth hive with 30 horizontal frames.

Wow...that's WAY too many bees for the nuc. You need a ten frame box to hold all those bees, maybe more!

The Nuc was for a member that needed some bees for a split. She was taking them to her apiary and giving them a frame of brood with a queen cell on it.

I wonder, because of the size, if this colony might have absconded. If that is about half (a swarm), my word what a hive the original would be.

They looked too healthy to be an absconded colony. I think it came from a large parent colony judging by the flight patterns during the move in and behavior during recovery.

Is one of the largest swarm I have seen on video. 😲You may need more frames and another box.😂 I wonder if because of the size it was an abscond, but they acted real nice for an abscond. Did they eat like crazy when you got them home? If that wasn't an abscond that parent colony must have been HUGE! I'll bet there is 3 or 4 deeps worth of bees there. Nice bees, Grats.😁God Blessed you that day.👏

It definitely was one of the largest I have seen in my career. It went into 5 boxes. One Nuc and two double deep stacks. The Nuc was given to a beekeeper who was making a split with some swarm cells and needed some more bees for it. Double deeps were then combined into a long Langstroth that fits 30 frames.

Not entirely sure. She’s currently laying well. She made have killed the other ones if there were multiples. I’m guessing the this swarm was cast from a massive parent Colony.

We did indeed divide them up and once we got them back to the Apiary, we added a frame of brood to each one so the queenless groups can make a new queen

Why do you bother putting them into a half size 'catchbox'? Surely it makes sense to put the bees into one or two brood boxes.

If you watched the whole video you’ll notice they actually go into 4 deep boxes and one Nuc. In the industry we call that size box a Nuc not a catch box. The Nuc was for another beekeeper to make a split by adding a frame of eggs so they can make a queen. ‘Brood box’ isn’t a size. It’s either deep, medium, or shallow. And they can can be used as brood boxes or as honey supers. Thanks for watching!
