When I went out on my own 20+ years ago My approach has always been " If the business survives then so do I." It is now changed to "When my business is successful, so am I"

A back-up truck is a must! If you can’t afford one at the moment, I would highly recommend building a relationship with a competitor and having something pre-negotiated for them to move your dumpsters

It's worked really well for us, and there's a very large percentage of our customers who like the flexibility to cancel if their plans change. It's a win / win for everyone. The best part: It doesn't cost anything, it's straight profit to your bottom line. Thanks for the feedback, and Thanks for watching.

Yep, get rid of the toys, you'll get better ones later. That's IF you have the drive to do it. 100% agree. Not a fan of the paid for driveway protection. We're not ever assuming risk for a residential driveway. We'll set wood, or use theirs, but there's not gaurentee that their residential driveway will hold up to our commerical equipment. I just wouldn't want to charge for that "protection" and then have an issue.

Great video like always John. I started with my standard rail roll-off trailer and then moved into the Ford F650 roll-off truck . The truck set up is definitely way better and more efficient than the trailer set up, but I as of right now plan on always keeping the roll-off trailer as my emergency backup even as I add more trucks. Some of the advantages of the trailer as a backup in my mind is that they are relatively cheaper than a truck to inure and pretty much able to pull with any 3/4 ton truck and still get the job done.
@samedaydumpster

Agree. I did a video on guys who run trailer setups to keep them as their backups. The simple fact you can pull the bumper-pull style with any vehicle including your wife’s mini-van in a pinch makes them an extremely strong backup. Thanks for watching Dana. 👊🏾

Agreed. I have a back up trucks for both my cable and my Hooklift trucks. We operate in the northern area that is very hard to get maintenance done and end up doing a lot of our own. The back up trucks have saved me countless times over the years. Great video!

John, love your videos. Straight up and no BS! They open up my thinking about the dumpster rental business. You always have a couple of nuggets in there I can really think about and/or apply. That said, on a reg cab 26k truck (not derated), what do you feel is the ideal CA measurement and Palfinger 54” lift when often approaching your weight limit 26k? CA 12’? (To jump the gun, curious what CA is on your new Peterbilt?). Thanks, Keith 🇺🇸
@samedaydumpster
@samedaydumpster Жыл бұрын
For s 26,000lb chassis, I would run a Palfinger T22. It will take 12’ - 16’ cans and still has a quite short wheelbase for tight areas. My new Peterbilt is only about 16” longer than my 6500. Great question. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and support my channel. Thank You. 🙏🏽🙏🏽

@keithignatowicz5271 Жыл бұрын
John, so I got it right, your preference is a 12 foot Cab to Axel (CA) length for proper weight distribution on a 26k chassis regular cab and not de-rated? 🇺🇸
@samedaydumpster
@samedaydumpster Жыл бұрын
@@keithignatowicz5271 CA = 108” - 132” anything in that range will work. Stay away from the shorter “84 CA and anything longer than 132”. That’s correct, that’s my preference

@@samedaydumpsterI’m glad you mentioned this. I was looking at a Mack MD642 with a 6.7L Cummins. Problem is, it has an Allison 2500RDS and not the 3000. So no live gear for the PTO. Which transmission do you have in the Pete? Allison 3000 or Paccar TX8?

i’ve got a 2019 f250 6.7L and a 14k texas pride roll off trailer. i have 7 dumpsters and would have to get them all modified to do hooklift? think it would be wise to sell my truck and trailer and get a 6500 or f650? I’d have to daily drive it or just get a cheap cash car to daily drive.. how many MPG do you get on the 6500? i’ve been wanting to do this option for a while just would like your input
@samedaydumpster
@samedaydumpster Жыл бұрын
11.8 mpg on both my 6500’s. That’s average since the day they were both new. Loaded, unloaded, idle time, everything calculated into that 11.8 mpg. I personally wouldn’t spend the money or resources trying to retro-fit trailer style dumpsters to hooklift. I would sell them off, Thank them all for a job well done and buy the correct dumpsters for your new truck. Having and using the correct tool is absolutely essential. Don’t get caught trying to run your business on the cheap, not in this game. That’s my $0.02 cents worth my friend.

Would it be easier / better to take over an aging dumpster business or start from ground zero?
@samedaydumpster

I personally wouldn’t ever buy another business. My philosophy is “I can build something better than I can buy.” Obviously every circumstance is different, and I’m sure there are businesses out there worth buying, It’s just not something I would entertain. Great question!

Thank you for your time and advice. Back to purchasing an established business... So much would be in place, land, building, permits, phone, equipment, employees... I am comfortable with all things machinery, growing up in ranch and farming, then driving 1.5 million miles with a class A cdl. My current business does not have a standardized pricing structure, which is why something that does... looks appealing.

Hey, I am in sherbrooke quebec Canada. We have 3 bags guys here already all of them have 10 to 12 wheels cable roll off. Which is fine and I driven for those companies in the past. I always want to start my one thing and I know I have the chance right now. I going small, haha no I don't mean business wise. No-no, I'm going rolloff small. I'm looking at international cv hock roll off trucks. Why? Why not? I will be able to fit in those areas where the big guys can't. Best part those big companies don't care cause they already many the big $$ with there 30 and 40 yards. So I'll offer the 8, 10, 12, 15, 20 and 25. If the clients need a small sizes then it will be my business. Anyways, I'm at the late homework stages and getting all the ideas that I can to start this soon. If you have the time, any tips, ideas that would help me start this..with a bang? My next step is to call all the big guys to find how much for there rentals and after financing. I would appreciate any ideas that could help. Love your channel BTW and your ideas that I have seen so far. 😊
