The thing that makes me the most mad about the cheating to boost the drama factor is that it completely ruined what they had been setting up for everyone. The whole point to everyone is that they’re these aggressive stereotypes right? Gwen is the creepy goth girl, Duncan is the violent delinquent, Courtney is the uptight know it all. But the point of their early arcs was, Gwen isn’t creepy and antisocial, she’s had a bad time opening up to people and is just shy and sensitive, and likewise Duncan isn’t some tough untouchable person, he’s just a dude, who likes animals and his girlfriend and he put on a persona that he thought he was expected to have. That’s the arc they built for him, genuinely nice person who genuinely cared. And it was just such a slap in the face to throw away so much of his development and established morals just for some extra drama that I don’t think a single consumer of the show enjoyed. So when you see people so upset about duncney ending it’s not because it was necessarily the perfect ship, but rather because it shit on all this previous work. On top of the fact that I believe I remember reading somewhere that the actual people working on the show at the time didn’t agree with the randomly introduced cheating and love triangle stuff with Duncan. To a degree I understand this show is the most parody of parodies of reality tv, so the fact that the directors fucked up peoples shit to add more drama actually fits, but it does ruin what people genuinely enjoyed to a degree.
