Close call but for me it’s the Dimarzio. I like the extra chunk it gives.

I prefer the Super D because I lean heavily towards 70s classic rock tones and the Super D is all over that era. The Duncan is great, no doubt, but it's just a bit more modern than I am. I like of live in the past when it comes to tone.

The DiMarzio is way less noisy I noticed. It's chunkier too. More throaty and grindy.

The Super Distortion has that thick, chunky bass. The Duncan Distortion is a JB with a ceramic mag swapped in, giving what is essentially the JB sound with boosted mids/highs and tightened up lows.

Very minute difference, but I always opt towards Dimarzio Super Distortion, it sounds more crisp and tight, thus, feels more controllable for me. But the Duncan Distortion is a good pickup, too, it's just my personal preference.

Cool man. I prefer dimarzio in general as well. Thanks for the comment

I prefer the Super Distortion, but for these more modern, downturned riffs, I think the Duncan Distortion holds up better. Again, I don't tune down like this, so for me a Super D can do it all.

Terrance from Suffocation tunes to C# and it sounds good. I don't tuner than C and it's fine for that. Alot of guitars came with these pickups.. Especially BC Rich, Hamer, Dean and Charvel. They're perfect for metal.

Super Distortion by Dimarzio. I am really love the 'dual sound' version of the pickup as well. i feel although way more cutting than even the Duncan distortion SH-6, the even less hairy SH-5 custom is the super distortion's real comparison. ... ...i am believe the custom custom, the distortion and the sh-5 custom were all attempts by seymour duncan to make EVH a pickup for him and the band. Because EVH liked the super distortion. The duncan SH-5 has that bright edge to all of the notes throughout the frequency range.That is why EVH used it on the recording with the ibanez destroyer. However EVH really liked and bloomed on the Super Distortion. So he used them both. Even tried different wax in the pickups settling on some type of wax that allowed something to escape through, although way more controlled and subtle. EVH redid the tremelo parts with the original whammy recordings and the Super Distortion and blended the tracks with the SH-5 and whammy recordings without the knowledge of guitar tech and industry recording tech, they did it in secret! when it was revealed on the full band listening to it they all were ecstatic, the guitar tech had no choice to agree. GIVE YOU A CLEARER PICTURE OF SOME THINGS IN THIS WORLD OF REALITY? That is why you don't mess with a martial artist guitarist genius! They could not take EVH's SOUL! The bloodsuckers! The industry hierarchy bull malarky! He also had a plethora of PULSONIC CONES and early rola cones from 1970, 1971,1972, and the best one the 1973 early rola cone celestion G12M 'greenback' speakers. The best speakers known in the world until today. Along with a 1967 marshall plexi cranked on full blast.

The Super Distortion, for shure. I have a SD Black Winter, a SD Distortion, a SD SH-5, a SD SH14, a SM Solar, a DM Evolution, a DM Titan, a DM Crunch lab (it sounds way better in reverse ), a EMG 81 and a DM Super Distortion as bridge pickups in my guitars. And the Super Distortion is the best sounding and best feeling pickup of all of them. An absolute chunky classic.

That’s awesome and I’m a little jealous of your pickup collection. Thanks for sharing

@@hangingdeadguy1 Most times I bought relatively cheap Harley Benton guitars and swapped the pickups (the newer Harley Benton`s for over 250 euros most times have locking tuners and stainless steel frets). It´s unbelievable what you get these days for little money.

I love both brands but Dimarzio just has a character that is difficult to describe. Dimarzios have a color to them that is very pleasing to the ears.

YES! you explained exactly what i feel and hear, it is like a warmth kind of thing and the pickup doesn't fight back either when you play it

Curious if you found getting the pinch harmonics were easier on either one
@hangingdeadguy1 Жыл бұрын
Good question. I think they were about the same. I don’t even try to get pinch harmonics they just happen when I play. Probably because of my holding of the pick. Thanks for the question and comment. I’m sorry for my arrogance in answering but I really have to concentrate on not doing pinch harmonics rather than letting them happen

In this case i prefer the Duncan, but i find Dimarzio generally sounds higher fidelity and they seem to be more innovative with their pickups

Yeah,the 498t is also a smoking pickup.
@zAvAvAz9 ай бұрын
Yeah it seams the SH-5 custom, the 498T, and the Super Distortion pretty much rule along side Suhr Thornbucker, and Pariah pickups pasadena white. If you use a duncan SH-5 custom, use it in an ibanez destroyer or similar guitar. And for regular guitars you can use the super distortion. @@vmathias2023

Here I prefer the the Duncan it sounds slightly more modern. The Dimarzio is more broad in the lower mids and has a little more upper mid to balance them out. I prefer tones with less mid bass and upper mid.
@hangingdeadguy14 ай бұрын
That’s awesome answer. I do prefer a low midrange but the dimarzio is definitely is kind of muddy. So the Duncan is 👍🏼

They aren't as tight as the Super Distortion though. That have more high end noise. They're fine pickups they're just not particularly versatile while the DiMarzio can do it all.
