It's funny that you say Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft are intimidating words. You pronounced them pretty well, whereas your pronunciation of Tönnies made me chuckle a bit 💀
@MichaelKumpmann2 ай бұрын
This Gemeinschaft versus Gesellschaft is also important in one huge area of Politics. Large Parts of the Alain de Benoist influenced european new right (and related persons like Dugin) have a slogan called "Gemeinschaft statt Gesellschaft" (Gemeinschaft instead of Gesellschaft). These groups are opposed to modernity and what you called the Iron Cage. (Most times, they use the Heideggerian Term "Gestell" instead. Gestell is a german word describing a structure which forces components of a larger machine like a car to stay at their designated place to ensure their proper functioning and placement, keep their proper distance and prevent them from damaging each other. For example, if a motor moves too much, it might lose its connection to the fuel tank or if the connection to the fuel tank is elastic, too much movement might cause the machine to be inefficient because the fuel needs to travel larger distances to reach the motor. A Gestell prevents that. Heidegger called technologies influence on society and its drive for efficiency a "Gestell".) And they are mostly traditionalists who want a kind of Confucianists or Hindu System where a priest has a certain degree of respect due to his priesthood, there are certain duties of fathers towards children and vice versa.

To add to race as a social construct. The society and culture of each “race” tends to reinforce their own differences, causing people to have children with people who look like them. This reinforces these racial divides and keeps the boundaries thriving. It’s hard to imagine an America where a person would not say “im white/black/asian” etc compared to never stating it at all. Acknowledging this classification causes the classification to exist.

Ironically, it feels like Weber's Iron Cage might be breaking down, at least at the fast food places I frequent, because the menu boards are used to show ads and promos most of the time, meaning I need to check if the item I want is still offered or 'converse' for a couple seconds before I can make a decision

I watched through the first 15 minutes and the video looks very promising! Speaking of interactionism, Max Weber is totally unrelated, did you mean Georg Simmel? Moreover, I’d definitely mention Erving Goffman who was the most famous scholar who used this framework in empirical research rather than Cooley of Mead who were mostly thinkers.
@vanvidra3 ай бұрын
Yeah that was really weird to see Weber mentioned along Mead. I’d say people like Weber and Simmel (to a larger extent) influenced with their more interpretation-based style the Chicago school with people like Goffman, though calling them a part of the same school of thought just feels a little wrong.
@LETIshNick3 ай бұрын
I spotted a couple of other mistakes. First, a major one, discussing protestant ethics, Max Weber is mentionned again in the context of interactionnism, but these two are from different realms. The second and the third are very minor issues. “Rich get richer and poor poorer” is mostly related to Matthiew effect (which should be in the iceberg), than to reproduction. Symbolic capital is built upon items from other capitals that are especially recognized in a specific field one’s acting. For instance, being able to write well (cultural capital) is barely recognized in the scientific field, but it’s of importance in the litterary field.

I'm amazed how being sociology major but in different country makes me look so different on the field. I knew all the things that you talked about but I would never said that they belong to the bottom tiers of the iceberg. For me Sociology becomes really strange when you start to deal with social ontology, or try to operationalize some philosophers that you would never connect with empirical studies, like Agamben or Augé. Overall great video, makes you think

Thanks for the video, there are quite a few ideas I wasn’t aware of, especially towards the end. Sorry for occupying the comment section, but I'm fond of sociology :) I'd like to add things that allow us to go waaaaay deeper. These are my suggestions (from the tip towards the bottom): - stigmatization (Goffman) - techniques of the body (Mauss) - rituals (van Guennep, Goffman, Bourdieu) - total institutions (Goffman) - social construction of scientific facts (Latour) - unanticipated consequences (Merton) - The Twofold Truth of Labour (Bourdieu) - potlatch (Mauss) - non-human agency (Latour/Callon) - genius as a purposeful creation (Elias) - the predominance of the right hand (Hertz, Tcherkezoff) - social construction of consciousness (Elias)
