This was painful to watch. A Guild Heighliner is NOT a "wormhole tube." It's the Dune equivalent of a containership. It's basically an ENORMOUS shell equipped with engines (Holtzman FTL drive), environmental systems, etc. It carries entire fleets of conventional intrasystem starships, sometimes with the fleets of warring Houses right next to each other. The Guild's rules are strict and any foolishness aboard one will get your House isolated from the rest of the universe. The spice must flow!

We are naively watching Dune for the first time. We are going to say lots of wrong things, but hopefully, we may ask some good questions!

@@semistableclips Fair enough! That being said, there is nothing in the film to indicate that a Heighliner contains a wormhole. The scenes simply show smaller ships exiting a Heighliner before descending to a planet's surface. The 1984 version does a fair job of showing the loading of the Atreides fleet into a Heighliner, although you'll need to ignore the weirdness with the Navigator's vag-mouth. 🤣

Heighliners are not supposed to be Stargates. They are supposed to be starships. With travel time and movement.

Idk if there's a joke here I'm missing, but the "tunnel" IS the guildship, which has already folded space, and everything needing to be transported just flies through it. This is a big simplification compared to what happens in the books, and begs the question "how do the guildships get there in the first place?", but it's a neat way to simplify filming of FTL in the Dune universe. Way better than David Lynch's take, if you ask me.

In Lynch's version, the method of folding space was pure garbage. The ENGINES do that, not the Navigators. Navigators NAVIGATE, oddly enough. What he DID get right was the rest of the operation. Heighliner arrives, customer flies their fleet inside. Heighliner jumps to destination, customer flies fleet down to world, Heighliner heads out to next job.

It sounds like fans are saying this tube is the guild ship and that creating the "wormhole' within the tube is difficult part that navigators do.

You would need to figure out a safe location to open the wormhole, and the only way of gaining the forsight to do that is by consuning copious amounts of spice, which is what navigators do.

@@semistableclips yeah normally you'd just use a computer to calculate that sort of thing, but since thinking machines are banned they have to use navigators instead.

A bubble in space time to keep the present relevant over great distances. But spice extends life and consciousness and the expanded comprehension that the mind can absorb about its surroundings and experiences, far greater than where the humans of the past were, it's evolved everything about humans in the timeline of humans in that far off future. The Navigators who are vast consumers of spice it's evolved beyond all recognizable understanding of the human form and therefore capabilities of the human mind.

@@semistableclips No not AI just superhuman intelligence linked into the universe itself like a super consciousness of cause and effect and been able to cause the desired outcome, after all they banned the use of computers, hence the designated houses use of humans such as the mentats , who were " human computers" , the navigators are way into the realm of beyond supercomputers. Then there is Paul who is an anomalous diversion in the possibilities , mind training of bene-gesserit and mentat expanded into the realm of the navigators with the spice and the water of life . I wonder if the Navigators have been the ones to try the water of life and died. ( they tried and failed, no they tried and died)
