I don't get the point of this video. The entire statement is, that if you start with DI, you shouldn't buy DI & DI:U to begin with, but both are good and different enough to buy later on, if you love the game. Why does this need to be said? It's like saying, don't buy Brass Birmingham & Lancashire, but start with one. Or don't buy Wingspan and Wyrmspan, just start with one. Why would anyone buy both to start with?

My take is this: I own Dune Imperium + both expansions and we played it alot. Awesome game. Movie 2 came out we loved it made fun of the taxi easy to handle sandworms BUT Dune Uprising came out. I thought to myself I wait for Movie 3. I guess they will milk the cow again and make another base game. Why go with the middle child 😂. I have one rule: I must have played all my games at least once (a stopped session because I didn't like the game counts) before I buy a new game. And this should be common sense IMHO.❤

I have Uprising in it's physical form and the original in digital, and I do prefer Uprising as a whole. The worms make combat more interesting. The spies add some added intrigue to the gameplay. The only reason I play the original more is because, well, pulling up a game no Steam is far easier than unboxing a game and setting it up on my table.

@@chickentruck75 I agree, to an extent. But because the board spaces are more nuanced and resource “dry” affecting choices in how you’ll scrape together what you need, a strong enough sense of tension remains, I think anyway. I love Dune Imperium. Def top 10 games for me. I play mostly online now though, as Uprising just feels more intense and crazy at the table, in a good way, also less cluttered and more cohesive. For my group, we are all aware of the “swingyness”, so we see less of those big 5 point underdog wins. But I don’t feel one is necessarily better than the other, only different in tone and pace. I prefer Uprising, but perhaps because that’s what I played first and what I’m used to as a base experience, though I own it all. And really just allows “DUNE IMPERIUM” in general, more life and variety.

I was really upset with Direwolf when they released Uprising so close to the Immortality expansion. I had just finished blinging out my Imperium game with all their expansions and they release this other game that seemed better. Had what I considered better mechanics, and I was not happy. But at some point, I probably will, mainly because I know there is a way to bring over all those expansions.

Excellent video. You did a great job explaining the core differences between the two games, providing a detalied perspective of the pros and cons of both. I think we need more analysis like this one where we discuss if one clicks better with you than the other instead of the neverending DI vs DIU debate which always ends in "this one or that one is better". For example, for me Dune Imperium fits better. Due to the sandworms mechanic, Dune Imperium Uprising feels different, it has a another type of tension, it has a more explosive arc, with big ups and downs. Having a clear winning strategy makes the game stops everytime someone is trying to pull a big worm move, because when that happens everybody have to drop their plans and try to stop that player, otherwise they can score a big chunk of VP, even 5VP in a single conflict which is half of the points you need to end the game. I find that very one dimensional and anticlimatic. Also, game length can vary a lot if someone uses the worms effectively. And due to the spies I find the less tighter experience of Dune Imperium Uprising less engaging, but I totally can see the other way around for someone else. Dune Imperium grants a kind of vibe that resonates more with me. You have to scratch point by point and one single VP feels like a victory. In comparison, winning VP on Dune Imperium Uprising doesn't feel as rewarding since there is a constant and always present threat of someone pocking a boatload of VPs in a single conflict resolution. And of course, expansions are a big deal when comparing both, since Dune Imperium Uprising works great alone but Dune Imperium needs at least Rise of Ix. Dune Imperium works better for me, yes, but for another group could be Dune Imperium Uprising, and that's an indication that both are good games.

I am picking up Uprising next week after careful deliberation on which to get. I think another good reason to get Uprising is value (for a lesser boardgame hobbiest like me). Maybe it’s just that people are tired of birds in their games. After all, not everyone can appreciate the fine art of birdwatching! In all seriousness. I think it is partially due to the "new ness" of wingspan. It is one of the new generation of games - where monopoly, catan, etc are all a bit more ld school. I also think the names are cheesy and the gameplay is worse. I did not like wyrmspan much - compared to wingspan.

Wingspan is not the best selling game of all time. Chess, checkers, and monopoly are likely the big three. In terms of hobby board games, Catan had sold over 40 million copies by 2022. Wingspan had sold 1.3 million by September 2021. I think Ticket to Ride has sold over 8 million, Dixit has sold over 6 million, Carcassonne has sold over 12 million, and Apples to Apples has sold over 15 million. Pandemic has sold over two million.
