My feeling was that the expansion places less emphasis on combat. You don't feel that constant need to get into the battles because there are other things you can do instead to score. That can be bad or good depending on your group. In some ways, I do prefer the simplicity of the base game, but I like some of the changes too.

We do that without the Ix expansion by shuffling the level 1, 2 and 3 conflict cards together and picking 10. The last conflict card can then be a level 1 with just basic reward instead of the usual "battle wins 2 victory points". This way, the last 2 rounds don't have to be the obligatory rush for troop and combat bonuses.

I recently bought this and the deluxe upgrade kit for the base game... I will surely get the deluxe bits for the expansion once they are available. I'm with you, Joel... amazing game. I'll sort of be sad if it doesn't win the Kennerspiel this year.
