There are a lot of really great videos on YT about the Dune universe, which is highly complex but fascinating, much more so than Star Wars, imo. There's so much to know that the movie only alludes to, like the Bene Gesserit, Mentats, the Kwisatz Haderach, Suk doctors, the Spacing Guild (which is a huge part that was left out almost completely), the life cycle of the sandworms, the Water of Life, and so, so much more. Quinn's Ideas is my favorite channel for Dune content, but Nerd Cookies and The Lorebrarians also put out good Dune videos. And there are lots of others. You'll probably find that you enjoy the movie more with the information that had to be left out but that's really pertinent all the same, and Dune 2 even more so. Dune 2 is much more action packed than this one, which has a lot of necessary set-up for the story. And you owe a good slap to the bonehead who told you that this was a Star Wars rip off.

FYI: Star Wars is a cheap knock off of Dune. Dune came out in 1965, Star Wars in 1977

Okay now I'm just giving you literally the plot of the whole movie but I think it makes more sense if you know all this. Duke Leto was given Arrakis by the Emperor who was a friend of his but duped him because he saw that Leto was becoming too popular with the great houses, as you can see Leto is an honest good hearted man and therefore the Emperor feared he would soon be dethroned by Leto. He made a plan with the Harkonnen, illegally gave them the use of his Sardukar (soldiers) and allowed them to infiltrate and kill Leto and all the people he brought with him. It was a setup from the start which Leto had a definite sense of but also he wouldn't back down from doing what was asked of him, taking over Arrakis.

Something maybe helpful for you to know incase you don't do a deep dive on all the lore is that Lady Jessica loved the Duke and she was directed by the Bene Gesserit to produce a female but being a Bene Gesserit she is capable of controlling every last part of her body, even choosing the gender of her children so because she loved the Duke she wanted to give him an heir and so she disobeyed the Bene Gesserit's orders and gave birth to a son, Paul. This is why the Reverend Mother was so angry with her because she messed with their centuries long plan. She also thought in doing so she could possibly produce the Kwizatch Haderach and that's why she trained Paul in the way, teaching him to do all the things the Bene Gesserit do including the use of "the voice" which is essentially Jedi mind control, they find a tone that they know will overpower whoever they are speaking to and it gets the person to do as they say. However, in Jessica doing all this she produces the Kwizatch Haderach one generation too early, in future books it is actually Paul's son, Leto ll who is the one to bring about the plan of the Kwizatch Haderach which Paul could not fulfill.
