I 43 now and started to cry like a baby during this. My father intrduced me to the world of Arrakis at the age of 12 and I've must have read the first book more than 30 times since then but my father died a year before the release of the first film and even though that film set it all up, this is the one we have all been waiting for and it hurts that my fathar aint around to experience this. My father and I didnt have much in common but we always had Arrakis.

Same.... sort of. I first saw the 1984 version when I was like 5. Fell in love with it. Didn't know my dad for my formative years. Finally reconnected, and he was all about the novels. We bonded over that. Then the 2021 version came out, and he hated it. Them's the breaks I guess, lol

@@konradk1066Ouch! I loved it, loved the original movie as well but have still never read the books. I've found that reading the books ruins most movies cause the movies just can't do justice. Stephen King's The Green Mile, Cormac McCarthy No Country For Old Men an there's another I'm forgetting. I thought those movies did justice to the books but usually I can't do it, if I read the book first I generally don't like the movie.

I introduced my father to Dune. I first read it in the 9th grade and passed it over to him as soon as I was done with it. I loved it so much I bought the next two books and read those over the summer. No Idea how many times I've read them since. He still has my original copies from the 70's, I found some near mint copies of the same as well at a used bookstore. They're on their last legs. I have to see about getting him to go to the movies with me.

I like the fact that the shots are dirty. Reminds me of LOTR trilogy. Movies nowadays are so clean and so "perfectly" made that it's hard to believe and immerse yourself to the character's world.
@----ic6pw
@----ic6pw 10 ай бұрын
I hope it's not like LOTR. I think the second two LOTR movies were mostly never ending 'epic scale' fight scenes (and not very realistic ones). Dune part 1 was a lot deeper, focused on the atmosphere and the characters and the drama. A bit more mature.
@ManSeekingMeaning
@ManSeekingMeaning 10 ай бұрын
@@----ic6pwHe was clearly talking about the cinematography and he’s right. Greg Frasier is akin to the late, great Andrew Leslie in that he dirties up the screen and makes it feel lived in through his lens choices, his blocking and framing of objects close by, and allowing the dynamic elements to interact with the lens, etc. It makes the film feel more like Lawrence of Arabia or Return of the King and less like your sterile and plastic looking typical major blockbuster these days. Also, no one in their right mind thinks that The Lord of the Rings is less mature than Dune or vice versa. Two amazing worlds (and two masterful adaptions) can exist alongside one another without hitting the other down.

@@CosmicWanderer042 Tolkien probably didn't like Dune because the meta-context of the story was very anti-Imperialism, it incorporated A LOT of Middle-Eastern Sikhism and Zen Buddhist spiritual concepts and ideas, and had elements about expanding and evolving human consciousness, which likely didn't sit right with Tolkien whom was very Catholic in his views.

Just heard New Yorker film reviewer Justin Chiang's reductive review of Dune Part Two, where he casually gives a spoiler filled synopsis of the entire movie. Ultimately claiming that Villeneuve's direction lacks depth, and ends up insinuating that David Lynch's version is better. What an unbelievably inept review. I've seen the film twice now, will see it a third time this weekend, and as a 58 year old film fan, I can honestly say that Villeneuve has pulled off a masterpiece. A film that beautifully compliments the novel, with characters that feel perfectly cast. I haven't felt this satisfied with a film in many years. I cant wait for Part Three, which I assume will be Dune Messiah. See this in IMAX if you can, it's worth it.

This will be the first commercial film I've ever seen in IMAX. I saw a bunch of documentary and nature films in a museum as a kid in IMAX, the Everest and Titanic films were awesome. But this will be the first popcorn movie I've ever seen in this format.

This movie is going to be a Mt. Rushmore sci fi movie. Someone believe in the material so much they let the film maker do whatever it took to make it great. Most sci fi content never gets that chance.

I think I know who plays Alia. It’s Anya Taylor Joy. She was at the London premiere and Villeneuve said she has “a little more than a cameo”. So they either show a brief scene of an adult Alia, or they use a toddler (with her face covered Bene Gesetit style) and Anya’s voice.

2:06. In Namibia, there is a place called Hoarasib canyon, where traveling down a steep dune face makes a deep, grinding noise. The call them the roaring sands. Guides drive down them in Land Rovers so you can hear the noise clearly. The sound comes from air spaces between the grains of sand. No giant worms, though. If you're lucky, you might see desert elephants.
