I'm interested to see more. One of my biggest issues is that a lot of the upgrades/tech in 4X games can really lack flavour (sometimes it just comes off like adding multipliers to various stats). I hope they take a lea out of the Dune board game and make the factions functionally distinct!

You need a really deep politics system to do this universe justice. Most of the action in Dune occurs in the minds and its characters and politics of its factions.

As much as I want this, I kind of doubt that will happen out the gate for this game unless the developers are aiming for the political systems found typically in a grand strategy game. How they'll deal with making such a system accessible to most gamers without dumbing it down would be interesting to see.

4x makes more sense for Dune. I know a lot of people wanted a traditionally RTS, but if you've read the books you know there is more to Dune than brute strength, its also Machiavellian plots, assassinations, diplomacy, deception and betrayal. All of which don't really show up in RTS games.

Interesting enough, I was hoping more for a true RTS where you control each unit and can win a fight with superior placement and micromanagement. this looks more like civ in real-time where you click to attack and a dice roll happens in the background to see who wins but will have to wait to see more details.

If you've played Northgard by the developers, this is not to far off from their line of experience. It's a hybrid RTS. It's fun and works. Northgard's only issue imo was just the late game was abit uneventful depending on which mode you play.

@@apathy526 The death of the traditional RTS has been mostly due to the rise of 4X strategy games offering more strategic depth to the usual market of strategy game lovers. A 4X game has a higher market capital than a standard RTS game.

I think the fans are going to have to manage that one on their own. I know Petroglyph Games are working on an unknown game. I actually assumed it might be something out of the Dune universe, ether that or maybe Star Wars. It's possible that they intend to release two Dune games. I doubt it but maybe. Petroglyph had just remastered the 'OG C&C' games because most of the core people at Petroglyph are old WestWood people who created the Dune RTS games. It would make sense that they would get to do the remaster.

@@LightLeo111 I know Petroglyph cannot work on their old Dune games without permission from Universal (due to 2000 and Emperor being aesthetically linked to the 80s movie). Even then, there would still have to be permission granted from the Herbert estate.

I actually assumed that they were working on something because they dropped everything they were working on at Petroglyph and started on an unknown game. Maybe they intend on remastering the older Dune games? I doubt it, but they did remaster C&C recently. I kinda think Petroglyph is working on a Star Wars game though, like a sequel to Empire at War.

@@LightLeo111 Yeah. I even asked them on Facebook and they said that it would have been nice to make this game. I got the assumption that they would by that answer but apparently not. I think they are working on a remastered Tiberian Sun and RA2. It would be nice if EA gave them back their IP so they can make a great C&C game again. But that will probably never happen.

@@motorrebell We don't know that it won't feature more vehicular units. The game is releasing in Early Access. It could be just that they're only adding enough units per faction to make the game functional and enjoyable but intend to add more stuff later. They might actually want feedback tbh and build the rest of the game around what they learn from the community. Who knows. I think they kinda did that with Northgard.

Super hyped for this. Dune has a lot of political intrigues built in its universe, so the choice to go for grand strategy / 4x is a very good decision, no matter what the dune 2000 pure rts fans will say. I also like the art style, it makes the game really readable, which is really important when you play a grand strategy game. In terms of game systems, it seems to pull a good amount from northguard, while adding a lot of things on top, and removing the annoying micro-gestion from it. Looks very promising overall!

I think this is going to be more like Endless Legend mixed with Northgard than the "C&C" style. I'm happy with the choice to make it more of a slow burn 4X game than a "twitchy C&C game". I just hope others aren't disappointed with the switch.

Also, if they had made a new game in the style of Dune 2, it wouldn't be as archaic, it would be like what came after. They also created Dune 1, which was more of a point & click adventure game mixed with strategy elements. So even from the very start, they were exploring unique ideas for the franchise. With that said, I'm looking forward to a mix. Like having real-time gameplay mixed with 4X, because stuff like diplomacy, and natural factions is parts of the root of the Dune story. It's not just about warfare.

I believe they have a community post about the art style on the game's Steam page *edit to include their statement below: *Why did you choose the somewhat cartoonish and bold art style?* Creating a game on a desert planet has quite a few challenges, one of which is making sure what you look at for a few hours is not bland even if it’s just rock and sand. We spent a lot of time working on the environment and even worked with a geologist specialized in deserts to create things that could exist on such a planet. The stylized art direction comes into play by adding things that bring a variety of colors and shapes so that the environment can stay harsh while not getting boring.

Same Developer did Northgard if you are looking to see what the gameplay might be similar to. It's a much slower paced RTS style of play where your clicks per minute aren't as important as your overall strategy. I'm optimistic about this new one now, but only time will tell if it's any good.

A public feedback for the developers. My inital feelings: As a huge fan of Dune (both games and books) and RTS games in general, I am a bit disappointed that this game is a 4X being advertised as RTS. I think I will definitely give it a shot, but I was really hoping for some seriously good (and not fake) RTS. Oh well, who knows, maybe a Dune game will once again bring something truly new to the RTS scene in the gaming industry. Music: I'm usually VERY disappointed with recent games' and movies' music. Not with this one though. Throughout the entire trailer they kept me in a trance with this weirdly scifi-ish, mystical music, with a 6/8 time signature that for some reason sounded like 7/8. CRAZY GOOD! More of this, please! The "style" of this music fits the game and atmosphere so well. My only advice to the devs would be go wider with the soundstage. The choir that comes in at ~1:30 is epic, but it is so narrow, it's almost like I was listening to a mono source. Go WIDE! And create tons of soundtracks! Also, maybe try getting in contact with Frank Klepacki, you can't go wrong with him. Dune 2 and Dune 2000 soundtrack is made by him, and it's epic. Visuals: The game looks very cartoonish, which is another bad habit of nowadays game industry. I suggest, if you still have the chance, to go for a realistic look, it is just so much more immersive. I honestly can't enjoy cartoony looking games (I know, this is my personal preference), it takes away the immersion, which might be acceptable for some games and for some genre, but for an RTS, well, it definitely doesn't fit it. Dune is a serious theme, not some bedtime story, don't ruin it with ridiculous visuals, please! Overall: After seeing the first screenshots of the game I was very disappointed, but seeing this trailer, it's not nearly as bad as I thought. I thought it was gonna be another Europa Universalis 4 (or HOI4 or any other paradox 4x game), but this does indeed look more RTS, since I cannot see any kind of discrete grid system for the units, they go whereever they want, like in a real RTS. So, if by 4X RTS you meant that you combined both world's best aspects, namely the great economical, political and empire management depth of a 4X and unit management and combat mechanics of an RTS game, then way to go!

I was blown away when I first got into stellaris as a realtime 4X, but it's extremely demanding on my PC in the late game, gets so slow I very rarely finish a game. Kinda hoping they get the scale right to avoid this problem!

The option of colors Blue - Green - Red should be kept & are also very helpful to Identify friendy - neutral - enemy ( Troops - Fractions ) much easier between Armies on the Battlefield - map too .

This is more like Civilization mixed with Dune 2. There is a 4X element to it which offers more than just resource "gathering and combat". Like, the Freman are neutral factions that can be interacted with in a diplomatic way, or conquered by force. Kinda like how it's done in Civilization.

Yeah, they're probably both built on Unity, though I think Shiro Games does a better job at utilizing the engine than Amplitude Studios has done with their games using Unity. At least in terms of optimization.
